USC targets another top Jersey safety
By Phil Kornblut
USC had success recruiting New Jersey for the 2011 class landing three of the state's top prospects. The Gamecocks will be back in the Garden State for the 2012 class and one player they covet is DB Elijah Shumate (6-1 205) of Ramsey. He has offers from the Gamecocks, North Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Arizona, Colorado, Southern Cal, Pitt, Rutgers, LSU, Oregon, Boston College and Connecticut. He has been to Rutgers and BC and will visit Connecticut this weekend. Shumate has not visited USC but has interest in the Gamecocks. "It's an up and coming program," he said. "I would like to know a lot more about it and see the campus." Shumate said Rutgers is recruiting him the hardest but he's not claiming any favorites right now. He wants to decide before his season. Last season he had 63 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He will also play running back this season.
