UC received a blow to its depth on defense Saturday when freshman linebacker Solomon Tentman, from Roger Bacon High School, went down with a knee injury and had to be helped off the field. There was no final diagnosis after practice, but
Butch Jones said he feared it was a torn ACL.
”We were counting on Solomon,” Jones said. “It’s unfortunate, but it’s a part of the game. He was making great strides and great progress. I feel for him but I know he’ll battle back and he’ll be fine.”
Tentman was one of seven or eight freshmen who Jones as mentioned as having a chance to make a significant contribution this season.
When Jones was informed after practice that UC was not in the Associated Press Top 25, finishing at 26th, he said rather predictably that he didn’t much stock in preseason polls.
“Again, it’s where you finish,” Jones said. “It’s nice to be ranked but you’ve got to prove yourself every year. This year is no exception. Our kids are used to it.”
UC was not ranked last year, either, in the preseason and rose as No. 4 in the AP poll before its loss to Florida in the Sugar Bowl.
