Does anybody else worry about Gaines lack of production?

Not defensively.

Yes, to his offensive ability.

He will take time to develop his offensive game. However, he will have immediate impact on the defensive side of the ball. He will get minutes because of his shot blocking ability and size.

Don't forget that Uconn, Oklahoma, Memphis, Miami (FL) were all after this kid. He is a nice big man prospect. He needs to develop, but so do most 6'10" kids.

If he was developed offensively, he'd be McDonalds AA and lottery pick.

Who might you compare him too.

I know I know it isnt far but as far as size and athleticism?

Gaines has a very good sense of timing when blocking shots. He will be a legit defensive presence for the Cats. In my opinion, he will not play much next season. Gates, Jackson, and Thomas (Wilks will grab "some" time) will be the 3 man rotation down low. He will get spot minutes and time when someone is in foul trouble.

I highly doubt he will have an immediate impact on defense. Rarely ever do guys as raw as him have an immediate impact. The reason is because they won't see the court because they are too raw on offense. You can't play 4 on 5 on offense and expect to be successful.

I think you are right that he will be a huge liability on the offensive end, essentially being used to set screens and get offensive rebounds. I'm not opposed to my big man only doing that, especially if we have guards that can score.

"Immediate impact" was on overstatement on my part. I should have been more cautious with my word usage. I think Gaines will see playing time because of his size and ability on the defensive end.

Toyloy is gone. Wilks is too slight for the 4, as seen against WVU. Biggie hasn't made the necessary steps to contribute on a regular basis. Ibra, Yancy and JJ will have to man the post, but KG will see some spot time.

Kelvin has one thing that other almost 7 foot tall kids dont have and that is outstanding athleticism. Think back to a player such as Donald Little. Its not bad that he looks physically like Dwight Howard either. This kid will be a player just on athleticism alone i think he will play a huge role next year and years to come. All he needs to do is block shots rebound and dunk if he does them 3 with the potential hes got look out this kid will be a sure fire pro.

That sounds good but with all that, why couldn't he even garner minutes on his HS team?

Good question although i read that he wasnt in playing shape for a while. Maybe Cronin didnt want him to get hurt and told the coach to take it easy on him because the cats would need him next year!!!!

God I hope he turns out to be something like Quincy Acy from Baylor. This year I think 70% of his points were from dunks and he rebounded and blocked shots very well...I would be so excited if he does that his first two years and allow his offence to develop.

Little couldn't do much initially, and turned into a viable post option later on. Coaching can do wonderful things, so I hear.

All Im saying is that this kid has potential sorry im not going to downgrade the program and down the talent of a kid that we have not even seen play, all you supposible fans need to just find another team I REPEAT FIND ANOTHER TEAM!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU SAYING THAT WE SHOULD NEVER BE HAPPY IM A BEARCAT FAN AND WANT THESE KIDS TO PROGRESS AND HELP UC BACK TO NATIONAL POWER AGAIN!!! WE ARE NOT KANSAS OR KENTUCKY GET OVER IT WE DONT BRING IN ELITE LEVEL RECRUITS BUT EVERY RECRUIT THAT WE DO BRING IN IM HAPPY THAT WE GOT THE KID!!!!!!!!!!!! LET ME AND THE OTHER TRUE UC FANS HAVE HOPE AND GO FIND ANOTHER TEAM PLEASE. I HOPE THIS KID TURNS INTO A ALL AMERICAN AND IF HE DONT HES STILL WEARING UC GEAR SO LETS GO KG!!!!

I think the question that needs to be asked is how many people have seen this kid play ball in person? I would put my money on none. Let's wait and see what he brings to the table before complaining that he can't help us this year. Quite frankly, we don't have the depth down low to red shirt anyone so that is not even an option. Everything I have heard about Gaines says that he is solid defensively but needs to polish his offensive game. Most big guys come into college like this and if they don't, they are gone to the NBA after their freshman year. I'll take it.

On a side note, this site is not here for people to start degrading our coach or players. If you want to discuss a player or coach's on court play or decision making, fine. But keep it civil and relevant. At this point, Gaines has never played a game for the Bearcats. Let's give the kid a chance first. All players have strengths and weaknesses but there is no need to rip anyone at this point in the year and especially the new guys who have never played.
