From 2/23...
Pat Flavin has the size - the Lisle (Ill.) Benet Academy junior is 6-foot-7, 260 pounds - that colleges look for in an offensive tackle. Recently retired Benet coach Gary Goforth said Flavin has the attitude to back up his intimidating mass.
Flavin, a starter on the offensive line since his sophomore year, recorded a pancake block or knockdown one out of every five plays, Goforth said.
"He plays angry when he plays," Goforth said. "He does not like to lose anything. He's very, very aggressive. He hates to be beat. He goes into every play like, 'I'm going to beat you.'
"Kids like him don't come around very often. A lot of times a bigger kid will do enough to get by. But he doesn't want to do enough to get by; he wants to make the kid realize that you better be ready to play or you're just going to get flattened."
Goforth said Flavin, who plays mostly out of a two-point stance in Benet's spread offense, will work more on coming out of a three-point stance during the summer.
We've seen a lot of improvement from his sophomore to junior year. Last year, his feet got better, his hand placement got better and his work ethic in the weight room got better and it wasn't bad to begin with, it just got better.
Flavin is "still pretty light" at 260 pounds, Goforth said, but has caught the attention of several Division I football programs. The Benet standout already sports an offer from Ball State. Goforth said Illinois State likely will offer Flavin soon as well, even though the FCS (formerly Division I) program doesn't expect to land the big lineman because Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Purdue and Northern Illinois have also shown interest.
"All the big schools have come in from the area, and I think he's going to end up at one of those schools," Goforth said. "But I've been around recruiting enough to know that sometimes things don't work out the way you'd like to see things work out. It's not a science, and they have to project him where they want. But if I was going to be starting an offensive line, I would start him up
