Underclassman MVP :: Kenny Mullen – CB – Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (Ind.) :: Class of 2011
Mullen was right there with (Mylan) Hicks as the day’s best cover corner. In fact, out of all defensive backs, he made the most plays on the ball. He had a great play where he recovered on a double move by (DeAnthony) Arnett, cut in front of the route, batted the pass up in the air and came down with the interception. He has change of direction and instincts, which allow him to get the early jump on routes. He also has great ball skills.
Like Arnett, when the day was over Conway believed he had dominated most of the competition. That is, except for Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luer cornerback Kenny Mullen. All 5-9, 165 pounds of him.
"Mullen was the toughest corner for receivers to shake from on the day," Trieu said. "He has very natural cover skills and instincts. I don't think he's the fastest corner out there or the biggest, but he has solid feet, hips and technique. He also has good ball skills. He took on the best receivers and did a very solid job."
The recruiting picture is still quite hazy for Mullen, who reports only a Purdue offer. But he hopes to receive more interest from Michigan and Ohio State.
Spring practice sessions have begun for college football programs all over the Midwest, which means many prep prospects are visiting schools, attending practice sessions and will be attending spring games this month.
• In the past week, defensive back Ken Mullen (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) attended spring practices at Iowa, Purdue, Cincinnati, Ball State and Ohio State. He also plans to attend spring games at Ohio State and Iowa.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder has been a varsity starter at cornerback since his freshman season. He also played safety, linebacker, running back and a little quarterback during his junior season.
• Ken Mullen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Luers) is one of the top prospects in the Hoosier State. The 5-10, 180-pound cornerback says he's been offered scholarships by Purdue and Indiana.
Seems like we've been very selective with CB offers. We do have a lot of young CBs on the roster so we'd probably only take a guy that the staff was REALLY high on.
