Offered by Toledo and Northwestern.

Interest from UC, Michigan, Wisconsin, UCLA.

currently have Valdez Showers ranked as the # 14 player in the state of MI. He currently has offers from NW and Toledo. He is an excellent athlete (Football, Basketball and Track in HS) with legit 4.4 or better speed in the forty. He is more impressive as a RB than as DB in his Jr. film. He does show real toughness both on offense and defense. Right now he is built more like a WR than a RB (Think Jeremy Langford) but he is still only 16 or 17 years old and appears to have the frame to add additional muscle and weight. He could project to several positions in college (RB, WR, DB) because of his athleticism.
The question is, how does the MSU staff see him and how would they use him ?
Obviously, the staff likes his overall athleticism and decided to extend him an offer.

Last weekend, Showers attended the MichiganPreps.com Combine and clocked a sub 4.4-second 40-yard dash and had a vertical jump of nearly 3 feet.

Though most of his highlights in high school have come on offense, most teams think he can have an early impact as a defensive back in collge. His size and speed would allow him to match up with many different wide receivers.

SpartanMag.com rates Showers the No. 8 prospect in Michigan for the class of 2011.

Long article on Showers...

The 6-foot, 180-pound Madison Heights Madison star had sat out his entire sophomore campaign due to transfer rules, effectively silencing the buzz his talent would have surely generated.

But he finishes his runs. If he gets a crease, he can take it the distance. Defensively is probably his rawest position, but still he has great ability. At the corner, what we love about him is his length and his recovery speed. We've just got to fine tune a couple of little aspects, but we definitely feel he has all the tools. "

a very good athlete that you can put several places on the field," said Scout.com Midwest regional manager Allen Trieu. "He's ranked in the No. 9-12 range in-state right now. There will be some shuffling there, but it's clear he's one of the state's best. Nationally we rank him as a corner for now, and I think he'll be one of the country's top 25-30 at that position. That'll make him a higher end three-star prospect.

I know a lot of schools are looking at him as a cornerback and I think he'd be fine there, but I personally believe his best college spot would be free safety. It's there that he'd be able to use his instincts, straight-line speed and intelligence. He's also beginning to fill out and look more like a college safety."

Michigan was out front a little bit (in getting in on Showers' recruitment) because we went up to their camp last year and he did well," said Brock. "He ran a 4.4 up there and did some good things in the drills. They liked him. At the corner, everybody is coveting his size. He has a great size/speed combination, so that's really big. Michigan State ... they definitely offer some good things at the table as well."

The Spartans made clear exactly what they are offering during one of Showers' recent trips to East Lansing.

"I went up to a Michigan State spring practice," he told Scout.com. "They wanted to get me up there to see me in person. I was on the practice football field with Coach Dantonio and he told me he wanted to offer me a scholarship."

Showers added later: "Coach (Pat) Narduzzi is recruiting me and he's a real cool coach. We touch base on things outside of football. We have a real good connection. And the campus and everything is wonderful."

The Wolverines haven't extended a scholarship yet, but that could change in a matter of weeks.

"They want to get me up to their (one-day) camp this summer so they can see me in person and everything," Showers explained. "Hopefully I'll be able to make it there. If nothing else pops up, I'll be there."

(BTW...I left out alot more)

Valdez Showers seems to be leaning towards MSU, maybe because they've offered and Michigan hasn't? He'll be at MSU's spring game on Saturday along with a host of other in-state talents.

Michigan offers...

“He said he understands that it took awhile, but that's because they have only so many scholarships to give out and they wanted to really evaluate me and make sure I was the right fit,” Showers said.

Michigan is the eighth school to extend an offer to Showers so far in the recruiting process, joining Michigan State, Cincinnati, Toledo, Central Michigan, Wisconsin, Bowling Green and Northwestern.

For Michigan, Showers is the eighth in-state prospect the school has offered in the class of 2011. U-M has already received commitments from Plymouth defensive end Brennen Beyer, Birmingham Seaholm wide receiver Shawn Conway and Cass Tech defensive back Delonte Hollowell.

A commitment from Showers is likely several months away. He claims no favorites and does not plan to start narrowing his list of scholarship offers until the end of summer.

Several more college campus visits, and likely a few more scholarship offers, will be in by then, which means his recruiting picture could change significantly by the start of his senior season.

Michigan should be one of the top contenders for Showers’ services, however. He made several unofficial visits to Ann Arbor for home games, junior days and spring practices before being offered. Growing up nearby, Showers is very familiar with Michigan’s tradition, academic offerings and overall campus life.

The biggest remaining question with Showers, outside of which college he will choose, is what position he will play when he reaches the next level. As a junior he rushed for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns, but he also has strong potential on the defensive side of the football.

Showers said he will wait to see how his senior season plays out before he determines which side of the football he feels best suited for in college.

Michigan will focus on Showers as a defensive player. Depending on his physical growth in the next year, Showers could project at cornerback, safety or even in a hybrid safety/linebacker role if he chooses the Wolverines.

Some attention of late from ND, also hearing from Florida, UCLA, Illinois, Iowa, Purdue.

Madison Heights Madison defensive back Valdez Showers is seeing his recruiting stock explode this spring. Showers has exceptional size and speed, which landed him offers from both Dantonio and Rodriguez. Based on latest information, Showers is on the verge of becoming a national-level recruit. Several teams are trying to entice Showers with the option of playing offense and defense. However, if he makes a living playing on Sundays, it will almost certainly be on defense. Showers plans to visit both schools again this summer.

Valdez Showers Interview

TOM: Word on the street is that you received an offer from Florida recently?

VALDEZ: Yeah, I went down there on the 16th to visit the school. I camped the next day, and I could tell that the coaches were impressed. When I got home, I talked to one of the coaches, and he offered me a scholarship. They just said that overall I'm a great player, and I would fit well at cornerback for them.

TOM: Is that what most schools are recruiting you for? Cornerback?

VALDEZ: Yeah, that's what pretty much everyone sees me at.

TOM: That's a pretty big offer; how many total do you have now?

VALDEZ: I have a total of around 16 now. I don't have a top list yet, though. I'm going to sit down this week, and see if I can narrow it down.

TOM: There has to be some schools that stick out to you, though, right?

VALDEZ: Yeah, I mean, Florida sticks out because they have great football, and academics. Michigan sticks out, they'll probably be in the top group, too. I have a good connection with the coaches at Michigan, and they're well rounded, too.

TOM: When you say you want to narrow your list down, how are you going to decide who makes the cut? You have some nice offers from Auburn, Cinci, Michigan, and Florida, what's the criteria?

VALDEZ: I'm looking for great academics, great football, and a good coaching staff, of course. I really want to find the school that's the right fit for me, though. So, I'm not sure when I'll decide. I just want to take my time with it, and put it in God's hands.

TOM: With some offers out of state, and across the country, how will distance factor in?

VALDEZ: Distance won't be a factor. I'll just go where ever is best for me. My mom was excited when I got the Florida offer, and she's said that she'll come watch me play where ever I go, so that doesn't matter.

TOM: Were you able to make it back up for the Sound Mind Sound Body camp this weekend?

VALDEZ: Yeah, I went, but my flight got delayed from Florida. I came late to the second day, so I couldn't do a whole lot. I got to talk to a couple coaches from Michigan, and they were telling me to come back up and visit sometime soon. I'm going to try to get back up there pretty soon. I'm not sure when, though.

TOM: Since you're from Michigan, are you friends with any of the other Michigan recruits? Do they try to recruit you?

VALDEZ: I'm friends with Shawn Conway. We met through the 7 on 7's, and became cool through that. He doesn't really try to recruit me, he just tells me to pick the best school for me.

TOM: Describe yourself as an athlete to someone who has never watched film on you.

VALDEZ: I'm a leader on the field, a hard worker, explosive, fast, and I just make plays. I ran the 40 at the Florida camp, and I was timed at a 4.48, and a 4.5. I have a hamstring injury, too, so I know I can run faster than that.
