Holtz is very very good, and an excellent athlete. Holtz will be a big time player and a major D1 recruit. To show his versatility, he played WR and some RB last year, and as a FROSH, he actually quarterbacked Shaler to a 1st round playoff win over a Mike Hull (now at PSU) led Canon-Mac team two years ago. You just don't see freshman QBs lead their team to a playoff win, much less in WPIAL AAAA. He's an athletic kid who can throw a baseball 88MPH, dunk a basketball by jumping straight up in the air under the basket, and run a 4.6 40yd dash, plus he's 6'4" 225 with plenty more room to fill out. JP is the real deal and has the potential to be a monster at TE or H-Back or posibly even FB or LB, I know Joe and Wanny both think so.

Junior tight end JP Holtz of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Shaler Area took an unofficial visit to a Big East school this weekend and went home with his first offer. A number of other schools are also hot on trail of the talented junior.

“Recruiting is going pretty well,” said Holtz, who is 6-foot-4 and 232 pounds. “Cincinnati, West Virginia, Penn State, Wisconsin, NC State, Rutgers, LSU and Michigan State have showed the most interest.”

A visit to one of these schools, West Virginia, resulted in his first offer this weekend.

“I went to the West Virginia game when they played Rutgers,” said Holtz. “I wasn’t expecting them to offer. I gave the tight end coach a film a couple of weeks ago and they really liked it. My dad played college football with their defensive coordinator and we were talking to him before the game and he said that I have a scholarship offer there. Then the head coach came up to me and said that I have a scholarship to West Virginia.”

Aside from getting the offer, Holtz seemed impressed with his first West Virginia experience.

“I really liked the atmosphere at the game,” said Holtz. “Their fans are really intense. It reminds me of being at a Steelers game.”

Before his visit to West Virginia, Holtz took a few other visits earlier this fall.

“I visited Cincinnati and that went very well,” said Holtz. “They pretty much offered me.
I also visited Penn State and Pitt a couple times this year. Those visits went ok.”

Holtz is being recruited as a tight end, but this fall at Shaler he saw time at running back, slot receiver and linebacker. Despite only playing a little less than seven games due to a broken ankle, he finished with 10 rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown, and one interception returned for a touchdown.

How does a school "pretty much" offer you? Does he mean a verbal offer and he's yet to receive the written one?

I think your thinking is correct. I don't remember the date but I don't think written offers can be sent to players until the start of their senior year now. I think it was a recent rule change if I remember correctly.

Verbal offer. Heck, these same kids are (least for some schools) are giving their verbal commits now.

Though one kid has already flipped from one school to another, back to a school.

Nobody said this has to make sense.
