RaShawn Powell
Point Guard
Orlando, Florida
Ht: 5'11"
Wt: 160
Class: 2013

Jerry Meyer @3starmeyer
2013 Rashawn Powell, offers from Seton Hall, Miami, UCF, VT, Murray St, Mississippi State, involved Cincy, Memphis, Kstate, SC, UCLA, UVA

Strengths:
Powell is an exciting point guard that can score in a variety of ways. He is very quick with the ball and has an excellent first step that he does not hesitate to use to beat his defender. Powell excels on the break where he can get to the rim and finish with acrobatic layups. He also displayed the ability to make a play at end of clock situations and although small he did a great job finishing through contact. He has good range on his jumper and can knock down open threes off the catch or dribble. He moved the ball pretty well and was very effective at delivering the ball to teammates in drive, draw and kick situations. Powell could be special because he is a point guard that can make shots when his penetration is cut off. Powell also shoots well enough to play off the ball if needed.

Weaknesses:
Powell must add strength and continue to build his game in all skilled areas. He must also work on learning the game and be more vocal as a point guard.

Bottom Line:
Powell has all the tools to be a special guard he can score inside with slashes and out pass the arc. He has very good speed and quickness as well. He must and strength learn the game and be more vocal but his upside is tremendous.

2013 FL Assault PG Rashawn Powell offers: UCF, Miami, SHU, Virginia Tech, Mississippi St, Murray St, Cincinnati, Jacksonville & N Florida.

Coach Shumate was checking him out over the weekend. UC is getting in early but other high majors taking notice.

Dr. Phillips High of Orlando (FL) has been a steady supplier of Division 1-A basketball prospects. The names of highly recruited guards are familiar to college basketball fans and recruitniks across the country to come from the program in recent years: Chris Warren – Ole Miss; Shane Larkin – Miami; Jason Rich – Florida State; Mario Sisinni – Coastal Carolina, etc. The latest to come out of coach Anthony Long’s successful program is 6-foot, 175-pound point guard Rashawn Powell, a highly recruited Class of 2013 point guard in the Sunshine State.

“RaShawn is next in line in continuing Dr. Phillips’ run of excellent lead guards,” coach Long says on the Dr. Phillips High basketball website. “His skill set is really at an advanced level for a junior. He can get to the rim almost any time he wants and usually makes good decisions with the ball. He presents a lot of problems for defenses because if you play off of him, he’ll drain the perimeter shot, but if you play him tight he will get by you every time.”

‘Pookie’, as he is known by friends and teammates, has impressed onlookers this spring on the AAU trail with Florida Assault with his ability to be a pure point guard and able to score when needed to. He was very appreciatie of the NCAA restoringthe April evaluation periods as he was able to show the college coaches more of his game.

“It was exciting playing in front of college coaches, I know a lot of coaches haven’t really seen me play so I saw it as an opportunity to prove myself as a quality basketball player,” Powell told NBE Sports. “I hope they saw that I play with passion and intensity.”

In the immediate aftermath of the open evaluation period Oklahoma State and Florida State began their recruiting efforts of Powell. He also added a new offer.

“Memphis offered me Sunday night,” Powell said.

He is currently considering those three schools in the recruiting process along with schools that had been previously involved such as Maryland, Illinois, Central Florida, Murray State and Cincinnati. Powell admits the process is just geting rolling at this time in his recruitment.

“No leaders right now, I want to take some unofficials first before I get into having leaders or favorites,” he said.

While keeping his game sharp on the AAU circuit Powell will also work on his defense and strength over the summer. With excellent quickness and the ability to knock down shots and create for others, Powell is ready to work on the areas of his game he feels needs to improve to become an all-around lead guard that college coaches will covet.

While he is still in the early stages of his recruitment, Powell has an ideal plan mapped out on how his recruitment will shape up.

“I’m looking at shedding my list after July/August,” he said. “[The] most important factor is my happiness, it doesn’t matter the school name, it’s what makes me happy at the end of the day.”

You can be certain one lucky program will consider themselves lucky if RaShawn Powell picks their school at the end of the day! Stay tuned through the summer as we continue to follow Powelland his rising recruitment.

Love this kid and I hope UC continues to pursue him. He is young and already a very good player.

i wonder if there was someone else in the game they were checking out as well

That's what I was thinking because I doubt they are still recruiting Powell but who knows.

i just can't foresee in any circumstance them taking another point guard- let alone a 5'11" point guard. if they were to take a point guard, it would have to be a 6'4" type of player who is not a true point and a guy uc would project as a wing player.

UC is still tracking Powell and he'd be a geat talent to land.

I agree. I always figured the final 3 scholarships would go to two bigs, and either a big guard/wing or a pure PG. You can never have too many guards, especially with Mick committed to an uptempo, guard heavy lineup.

uc backed off corban collins this year because they got kj and caupain before he committed. logic alone doesn't really support taking 3 point/combo guards in one class if you are able to spread those over 2 classes. especially for balancing purposes- since the freshmen class this fall will be 1 person- shaq thomas.

there are some developing bigs on the same team as powell. i would guess that were there for them primarily. they might be keeping tabs on powell, but he isn't anything more than a contingency at this point in time.

Powell is much too talented to be a contingency. You want him you better go after him hard because he will have a plethora of high major schools to choose from. However I agree that it would be surprising to land another combo. If Cronin is still recruiting him I think he must feel he can turn him into a pure point like he did with Cash. Still think the last 3 schollys go to a wing (Hopefully Hart, Reed, or Millinghaus) and two bigs (Woodson, Lawrence ect..)

They are not recruiting anyone else at the point or combo guard spots for 2013. The target they were watching plays on the same team as Powell...
