CLASS OF 2012 INTRO: TERRENCE SAMUEL

New York City has always been a top producer of point guard talent and Terrence Samuel looks to be one of the next wave of young talent in the Big Apple that college coaches are intrigued with. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound point guard out of the New Heights NYC AAU program and South Shore High School in Brooklyn has seen several college coaches stop by this fall to get a look at his game and he continues to hear from a growing list of colleges as his recruitment is just beginning to pick up.
“Colleges I’ve heard from [include] Rutgers, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Villanova, Louisville [and] Iowa State that i know of,” Samuel told NBE on Thursday evening.
So far this fall, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Hofstra have come to the Canarsie neighborhood school in Brooklyn to see Samuel and his teammates work out.
“No favorites at the moment,” said Samuel.
Last season as a freshman, Samuel made an immediate impact at the varsity level for South Shore which had finished 0-14 the year before in the Brooklyn AA conference. The Vikings earned an upset victory over powerful Lincoln and advanced to the second round of the PSAL Class AA playoffs. The chance to resurrect the struggling program and make an immediate impact with fellow 2013 classmate and friend Shamiek Sheppard drew Samuel to roll the dice and attend South Shore.
“I chose to go to Shore because I wanted to rebuild the organization with my fellow teammate Shamiek Sheppard and another reason was that I would be playing right away on a varsity level,” said Samuel.
There is no such sense of rebuilding on the AAU circuit as Samuel, along with pal Sheppard, are part of the powerful New Heights NYC AAU program that routinely produces high-major college basketball talent. This past summer Samuels and company reached the semifinals at Rumble in the Bronx and the Adidas Super 64, and a Summer in the City championship to close the July evaluation period.
“Best part is all the oppurtunties I have to travel around the world and play ball,” Samuel said about AAU ball with New Hights, “and the oppurtunity to play in front of college coaches.”
To continue his ability to impress college coaches in the coming years, Samuel tells NBE he approaches his workouts focused and determined to work hard. He continually works to improve his decision making ability as a point guard while improving his jump shot. Off the court he also brings the dedication to working hard and staying focus in the classroom where he hopes to earn another A- average in his sophomore year attending Victory Collegiate High School on the South Shore campus. His hard work has translated into some lofty goals for the coming year.
“I am looking most this year for a City [and/or] State Championship and for people to stop underestimating South Shore basketball,” Samuel said.
From the early looks of it, Terrence Samuel is a player in the Class of 2013 that NBE and college coaches will be following closely the next couple of seasons as he looks to take South Shore basketball to new heights in the PSAL and doing the same on the AAU trail with New Heights AAU.
