This is a joke. Same thing the previous 2 years. We will not be getting any respect from the national media.

Butch Jones needs to prove himself all over again. This is the big leagues, and until he gets some wins, the recruits and the media are going to be slightly (admittedly) skeptical.

The national perspective is that UC will be back where they belong (their words not mine) now that BK has moved on. I think a lot of people will underestimate UC once again and will be shocked after wins are piled up. I know the past two seasons The Sporting News predicted UC to finish 5th and the season before that they predicted UC to finish 7th. I think it was a Fox blogger who predicted UC to finish with only one win in 2008. Not sure if these guys will ever learn.

I'm shocked we're ranked that high based on what I've seen from espn before. Had we not won the BE last year, I would have bet UC would have been 5th ranked.
Being an expert doesn't mean they don't have bias.

These preseason rankings are a joke. The only preseason rankings I think hold any water are the ones that the coach's vote on. These "bloggers/experts" are basically fans that get paid to give their opinion. Hell if someone paid me I would have a daily blog with what I thought about the Beast and would prob get a decent following by fan sites in the league!

The polls are worthless until teams start conference play, but it's telling how UC is viewed.

The coaches polls have their flaws as well. Many of the coaches from the B10 and SEC always overank their conference foes as a matter of respect (or disrespect to say the Big East). Keep in mind, UC was actually ranked lower in the coaches polls for most of last season.

Don't the coach's vote on standings in their own conference's? Thats what I was referring to not the overall coach's poll.

Fine with me. I hope they keep picking us lower in the preseason rankings. Makes it more fun when they are wrong. 2 years hopefully going on 3. Although getting respect would be nice at some point.

Not only that, but it is hard to make up, even by going undefeated. :)

When you are looking at Butch Jones and this team there are question marks that would lead others to downgrade UC a bit going into the regular season. Most in the UC fan base thought that Butch Jones could come right in with the personnel on hand and post 10 wins for a 4th straight year. There is a chance of that happening, but looking at everything objectively the chances of that happening aren't great, they are still good, but not good enough to be at a point where I would expect 10 wins from a new staff and a new system. Looking at Pitt and WVU they are in pretty similar places. Both lost some very good and very productive pieces Pitt loses Stull, Dickerson, and Mick Williams. WVU loses Reed Williams, Brown, and Selvish Cappers. Pitt brings back Baldwin, Lewis, Pinkston, Sheard and Romeus. WVU brings back Sanders, Devine, JT Thomas and Chris Neild. Both teams have similarly skilled core players, UC is in the same boat. The main difference between Pitt, WVU and UC is in the coaching staffs. Pitt and WVU bring back staffs and systems that are for the most part in tact. I really like the staff that Butch Jones has brought in, but it remains to be seen how they will perform. When the three best teams are equal except for one area, and that area is the coaching staff outside observers will discount the newer staff. The statistics dictate that they must, especially 7 months out from the first game

Pitt's going to have a great line, solid D line, and a pretty darn good RB. They probably deserve to be ranked number 1 until such time as UC can show that we haven't missed a beat. If/when UC can, look for the Bearcats to climb up the charts once more.
