I think last year really snow balled on us. I think we were so use to winning that when we lost some last year we didn't know how to recover. I am really excited for the offense again. Collaros, Pead, Woods and Thompkins are going to be a force. If the line can create some holes and give Zach time we are going to be really good.

We return everyone on D and get Battle back. We will be improved with the extra year. Wolfe and Giodono will keep the d line in check, JK in the middle and Walter Stewart should have a strong junior year. Secondary scares me. They have the ability but we need to make sure they are all on the same page.

Destroy Austin Peau and then go to Tennessee and find a way. Lets remember that UT is not Bama or LSU. We can absolutely win this game but going to Tenn is not going to be easy.

One month away.

I'm extremely excited for the season... three seniors on the O-line- that's the key on offense. I think continuity on defense will be a great thing... finally our guys don't have to learn a new defense in training camp. That will help immensely. Provided there are no key injuries, because depth is still a concern, this team can certainly compete for a Big East title.

As a group, this is the best D-Line we have ever had, ever.....Collaros can have a monster year with all the weapons he has. This is an extremely, extremely important season for Coach Butch and the program. I am excited for the season, but they gotta' get it done on the field. This group should be able to go to Tennessee, and be ready to play and win...... Down the Drive.

Are we talking the starting D-line?... because I still have some concerns about depth- though it should be better than last year when Wolfe was having to play 80% or some crazy amount of the snaps.

I think Zach WILL have a better season both statistically and as a leader. From what reporters and people close to the program seem to be saying he has become a more vocal leader which is important... I'm excited to see what happens behind Isaiah at RB... if we can find a strong two-headed monster there, whether it's Darrin Williams, Poteat, whoever, it will take a ton of pressure off of Zach. This offense may not be as prolific as the 2009 offense but I think it will be loads more balanced which will help in the long run.

All good comments.

I can't wait for the season to start. If this team can get behind Butch Jones then I see no reason we can't compete for the Big East title. Yeah we have some questions and concerns, but every team does. Go out and play hard and we have the talent to win. I'm interested most in seeing how DJ Woods will do this year. Hopefully he gets his head right, he could be poised for a monster year.

He just recently became a father, which he's been very open about on twitter... wonder how that might effect him... who are our three starting WR's?

Woods, Thompkins ??????

Can't remember the kid's name, but there was a freshman that really came on late last year, got to imagine he will get the nod. I'm sure somebody here can remember his name.

Hopefully becoming a father will help him look at the big picture and realize every play isn't life or death, then he can relax and hopefully not overthink out there.

Mcclung was very impressive to me. We still haven't seen dyuain Lewis yet either and he was a 4 star recruit

McClung was the impressive freshmen, for sure... he showed very well for a true freshmen who wasn't all that highly recruited out of HS... he will definitely get a lot of playing time... Dyjuan could be a factor- is he finally good to go eligibility wise now? I like our group of WR's as a whole... not a ton of experience outside of DJ but a lot of talent and a lot of different looks... think Shaq will get some time in the slot? It probably won't happen but it would be a nice little look to throw in 2-3 times a game if they had a guy like Shaq take snaps out of the shotgun with a run/pass option...

Today was report day for the players... tomorrow is the first practice of camp, on campus... starting to get awfully excited as we're under one month now before Austin Peay comes to Nippert for a spanking!

Penalties

I can't wait for the season to start. I love UC football and going to the games is the highlight of my fall. Can't wait for the Saturday tailgates and the road trips to UT, Miami and Pittsburgh.

What really concerned me about last year's team was the lack of discipline this team showed. It seemed like we were constantly getting penalized on both sides of the ball. I felt like the lack of defensive experience, the transition to a new coach, learning a new offense, ect were all valid excuses for why we had a bad season. The one thing that cannot be excused is having a lack of discpline on the field.

I think we've got the talent on offense to win games and our defense should be better than it was last year. I'd say we have to win at least 6 and get back to a bowl game. Anything less won't be good for Butch.

He's clearly got the recruiting on a roll, this year will tell a lot about his ability to coach these guys up on the field. I trust Butch will have them ready to go and I can't wait to see them in action.

I'd contend that to a degree the penalties were intertwined with the coaching change, new offense/defense, terminology, etc... granted things like false starts are unforgivable... I may be drinking the kool-aid but I'm extremely optimistic about the improvement we will see overall from this TEAM...

HOMER ALERT!!!!

I could see this team doing anything from going 10-2 to 6-6... I DO NOT see another losing season.

Positive news out of the first day of camp:

Dom Battle received a medical hardship waiver for last season and is a redshirt Junior this year... Paul Dehner Jr. also said he looked very good and Battle himself said he was at about 95% coming back from the injury.

According to Koch, Darren Williams' career is over... Tore a hamstring during the off season and had to have surgery. Very unfortunate, and I wish him the best.

Definitely a guy who just couldn't stay healthy... had such a productive HS career unfortunate his career was cut short. The article made it sound as though he would be staying with the program though, in one fashion or another.

Sounds like the battle for #2 at RB will be HEATED!

1 - Pead
2 - Winn, Poteat, Teague???!!!

Collaros was quoted last month that Teague is the most impressive freshman he has ever seen; the kid knows the playbook, has all the moves and is thick from the waist down. I expect big things from Ohio's 2010 Mr. Football.

As far as this season goes, I think UC rebounds to have an 8-4/9-3 type season. I think this defense is going to play with a huge chip on its shoulder. This is the first time in three years the defense has the same coaching staff so there is not that learning curve. As to the offense, as long as UC holds onto the ball I don't see anyone in the Big East to stop them. I find it hard to believe that UC will have as much difficulty holding onto the ball as they did last season. The turnover margin last year was so awful it was comical.

Another reason I think UC reubounds this year is that I have serious questions about the rest of the league. It is funny to read other teams boards to see them crow about how good their squad is (I think the WVU fans have already determined they will win every game by 3 TDs or more). Her is what I see in a nutshell
1- UCONN- They will have a solid defense returning but what offense? Their QB, RB and WR positions still have yet to be filled at this time. They have a new coach who has not been a HC in about five years.
2- Louisville- Like WVU, here is another fan base that is a bit delusional. They have made major strides since the Kragthorpe years, but don't quite go calling yourself the new Miami Hurricanes just yet. They lost 24 seniors from last year. The major talent Strong has reeled in are still either true or redshirt freshmen for the most part.
3- Pitt. New coach with a major overhaul on offense. Last year, many assumed UC would not miss a beat because Butch Jones followed BK at CMU and took the Chips to new heights. Graham will have to re-invent the wheel here, moving from a pro formation to a spread formation. I think we all know to well the growing pains that come from this major kind of overhaul.
4- Rutgers. Rutgers is Rutgers. Schiano recruits as well as anyone in the conference but until Rutgers actually lives up to their potential, I am not ready to take them seriously. Maybe this is the year they prove me wrong, but all I know is UC has put up 117 pts on them in two years.
5- Syracuse. I think they are better than they were in the past (god knows that is not hard). I do think they got a few lucky bounces their way last year which catapaulted them to the Pinstripe Bowl. However, I am not ready to say the Cuse is back to the Donovan McNabb era just yet. They had a rough off season where they had players kicked off the team for off the field incidents, another player stabbed and just today lost their starting safety to a broken jaw. These sort of things have a way of coming back to haunt you during the regular season.
6- USF. Looks like Skip Holtz did last year what Jim Leavitt could never do- win football games in October and November. I think the Bulls could make a run for the conference championship but I still think BJ Daniels has not shown consistency just yet. Last year Holtz pulled Daniels for the back-up.
7- WVU. New HC and new playbook. Their OL was questionable last year and they lost RB Noel Devine. They might be starting a true freshman RB this year. The lose 7 starters on defense. Sorry Mountaineer fans, you probably have enough talent to win a lot of games in this conference, but I question whether you are good enough to win the Big East.

I agree with your point about the league being wide open- I think most analysts have WVU a step ahead of everyone else then it's a mess from there... I can't disagree with the preseason selection of WVU as the favorite, but the good thing is, they still play the games. :)

I think people are underestimating the coaching changes at WVU, Pitt, and UCONN. JK Schaffer made a great point when he said that for the first time since he was at UC, he has the same defensive coordinator and is running the same defense as the prior year. That is huge. When you can just react without thinking you can play so much faster. While some things don't change, the terminology almost always does. Any changes at all cause players to play a bit slower to try not to make mistakes. That's when you get beat. I think WVU, Pitt, and UCONN will all struggle at some point in the year because of the changes. Hopefully UC can take advantage. I think 6-1 in league play is doable while 5-2 is more likely. That could be enough to sneak into a BCS game. If they go 6-1 in league play, I think they end up 10-2. If 5-3, I think 9-3. I expect a good year out of this team.
