A couple unbeaten teams lost today, who are still left.. I do know 1 and that is THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI BEARCATS!!!!!
Your right Psax, we need to step our game up!
1. I will never ever complain about being 10-0
2. We played poorly on the offensive end
3. The officials were fair, but they called it tight which is hurt our size advantage
4. We went across the country
5. We won by double digits.
1. It was obvious this team is far better with Cash on the floor.
2. Wilks is a different player this year. He is making far less stupid plays and is playing within himself. He took 2 key charges and played pretty good D.
3. SK is fearless. He is a little inconsistent right now but that is just because he is a freshman. Consistency will come and he will be a big time player.
4. Yancy played strong. He had a dumb foul to put him to the bench in the first half but he rebounded the hell out of the ball and would have had an easy double-double if not for the early foul trouble.
5. This team has struggled from the foul line except when it matters most. 9-10 down the stretch to close out a game on the road is HUGE. Cash has turned the corner from the stripe and we have done well to get the ball in the right hands at the end of the game.
6. It seemed like the officials called the game completely different in the second half than they did in the first. There were so many calls that it robbed the game of the flow in the second half.
7. Our defense on OU's top 2 scorers was fantastic. Fitzgerald really struggled to get anything going.
I thought Parker did a great job in the first half when Cash was out especially defensively. The team is better when Cash plays well but in the first half he was out of control and over penetrating. He played much better in the second half. Was a bit disappointed that JJ didn't play more but he is a liability at the line.
Jeff Capel, Oklahoma head coach
On the game: “Congrats to Cincinnati. It was an ugly game from both sides. We, as a team, couldn’t make a shot. I don’t know if that was good defense or just really bad offense. It was an ugly game. I thought the first four or five minutes, I don’t if we can get better shots. If we knock down a few of them, maybe it’s a different story down the stretch.”
On Oklahoma’s effort: “I was proud of our guys for how we fought. I thought we fought throughout the game. I thought we did a decent job defensively throughout the game. We’re getting better, even with the way shot it, our three leading scorers, being a combined 8-28. It’s still a two possession game there with four or five minutes to go. We’re right there. Costly turnovers were a key point that really hurt us. We’ll keep fighting and we’ll keep working and we’ll keep getting better.”
On Oklahoma’s turnovers: “They all kind of came in a row. We had three in a row when it was a two point game and all of a sudden, it’s 10. Three turnovers right in a row. I think they’re unforced. We mishandled the ball twice trying to make a pass and not having the awareness to their switching. That’s an area we have to continue to work with our guys and we have to get better and we have to do a better job in practice of getting them to understand.”
Cash's play is so pivotal to our success. As is Gates. When Cash went to bench early in second half after being elbowed in eye, we really struggled. We quickly fall into the trap of being a perimeter passing team with him not out there. The immediate second he returned we started making shots and pushed the lead back up for good.
Gates still gets lazy at times, but he is 100 percent improved over last year. He still fails to box out some and is hesitant with the ball in his hands. He needs to purposefully be aggressive when he gets the ball. I think part of the problem is Cronin's gameplan to bring him so far out to set picks on every possession. I understand that philosophy but what happens is he sets a pick and then turns for ball and he is fifteen feet from the basket. Its too easy to double or triple team him that far out and strip the ball from him or force a bad shot or the ball to go back out to be reset. Happened several times last night. When the offense is struggling (land especially when Cash is off the floor) you need to be able to pound it inside to get a few easy baskets and to open up the defense more. Oklahoma got real comfortable with their zone with us being ineffective down low. We don't need to rely on hitting jump shots to win games.
Our defense is relentless. I'm love watching our defense be aggressive. Capel might not want to give us our due credit, but his team struggled because our defense forces teams to rush things. They got very few easy looks. They made several shots that were tough shots and late in the shot clock to stay in the game. They are young and we took advantage of that. Inexperienced players don't perform well when they have to force everything on offense. Just look at our play the last four years. If we can find a way to score 70 every night, we will win a lot more games than we lose. There are some good teams in the Big East, but our defense is good enough to make good teams struggle.
Nice win by the Cats, that's the kind of win that helps build confidence. The players don't care how good Oklahoma really is. Its a Big 12 team on the road that they beat. That will give them confidence that they can beat Big East teams.
Parker gives us little to nothing in terms of offense. I really do like that he plays solid Defense and rebounds extremely well, but he is a liability on the other end.
Is it me or has parker digressed offensively?! I felt like last year he could knock down free throws and open shots. This year it has been non existant.
I think he is pressing a bit. Cash has really stepped up and Parker has seen his minutes diminish a bit. I think he tries too hard to make shots sometimes. You can't shoot tight if you want to shoot a high percentage.
