Mick is the 38-year-old head coach of a team that's 14-7 overall, 5-4 in the nation's toughest conference, and currently projected to go the NCAA Tournament. His team is looking to looking to increase its win total for the fourth consecutive season, and in the last two years he's signed the number one player in the city (Yancy Gates) and one of the most highly-touted recruits in the country (Lance Stephenson).

This year's team is agonizingly close to being 17-4 if not for a blown call (end of regular vs. Gonzaga), a terrible night at the line (10-for-22 in the 2-OT loss at Xavier), and the bad finish at St. John's. Even winning two of those games would probably put the 'Cats back in the Top 25.

True, but at the end of the season close losses, and what coulda beens if uc had won will mean nothing. I hate to say it because I know this team is a few points here and there from being ranked, but IMO a few close losses is not Good enough.

To be fair I don't know that's exactly what Dan Hoard meant. I read it to mean that while we expect and demand greatness from our basketball program, can we enjoy the ride back to the summit?

I think we can all agree that the program is not where we want it to be right now, but we should appreciate the good work Mick has done to bring us back to respectability instead of crapping all over him at every opportunity.

Amen.

I think a lot of UC fans truly underestimate the job Mick had to do. I can understand some fans arguing the player development has not been there but that can get better(especially with some new Assistants). I think he has us in the right direction--do we really want to start over with a new coach? I know I dont.

I think Mick has done a great job of recruiting, problem is losing to teams that he shouldn't be losing to.

The one thing I hate to read is the excuse to not fire someone because "do we really want to start over?" I know it would suck to start over, and am not suggesting that UC needs to do so, but to not fire someone because you don't want to start over is a pitiful reason IMO.

Starting over could kill everything Mick has done--it could mean another 2-3 years with no NCAA and that could really hurt recruiting. The next couple years are huge for the success of the basketball program in the future IMO

Mick is not in danger yet. He might be if he collapses in March.

UC WILL NOT go into next seasons with a new basketball and football coaches. Will not happen. It would have to be bad. Really bad.

I agree, he will not, nor has he done anything to lead to be being fired. All I'm really saying is, the "we don't want to have to rebuild again" reason for not firing someone is irrational.

Right but the athletic department that is in debt will need some consistency and will not have the basketball and football programs with that type of uncertainty.

I don't know much about the debt issue but will this be a big issue next year as well, say if we don't make the tournament? (Hopefully it won't be an issue, just wondering if we are tied with Mick due to money issues longer then we may want him).

I have been back and forth all season long on what the university should do about Mick. He seems to be a very polarizing figure among bearcat fans which I definitely understand.

I honestly think that we need to give Mick the ability to sign his 2011 class. IMO I think this will be his make or break task as UC's coach. He has the ability to sign 5-6 guys and as of right now we seem to be very high on some verrry good recruits.

At this time it doesn't look like Mick has the ability to be a top coach but I really feel that he doesn't have the players to do what he wants to. It looks like he wants to run a L'ville type offense that is up and down the floor with as many athletes on the floor as he can get. Hopefully with Cash seemingly getting better each game, our offense can run and gun a little more.

I also have the feelings a lot of other fans do in that he can be very frustrating at times with his lack of in game coaching and the teams lack of focus at times but with his teams improving each year I dont see anyway the university pulls the plug on him this year or next. With that said I truly believe that if we win some big games this month the program will take a turn for the better.....not too sure what to think if we have another late season meltdown.

Lets hope!

I think some people were going to bash him at the first sign of problems. Also, some are going to have his back no matter what.

He has improved our record every year. He also was told by Mike Thomas he would have at least 5 years to rebuild from nothing.

SMU is just now coming back from a death penalty, and they reside in the heart of football (texas).
It takes time. New coaches, new relationships...especially when coaches start getting to know kids as early as 8th grade. (Recall Indiana and Damon Bailey?)
Butch has a solid team, and successful as of late. Cronin had none of that going for him. I'd suggest giving him another year. Besides, we're not going to get a much higher profile coach to come here until we do establish some winning seasons.

10 year could have been realistic but UC still has a good name and the best conference in the country on it's side.

If UC was still in C-USA who knows where we would be.

And if UC still had hugs we coulda got oj, walker, beasley, downey... BLoooCKKEDDD.

Also being in the BE, is a much better spot than being in CUSA.

Not OJ, he wanted to get paid.

And I think we know that but my point was giving that Huggins was fired we would be in a lot of trouble had we not joined the Big East.

Too many exuses by Mick and players seem to be ok with how the coach feels. Focus, execution and concentration seem to be lacking at times. Not to go back in history but being a tough Bearcat is what is expected. Hope to see a turn around but the schedule only gets tougher. I hope Mick is the right choice but I wonder. I did not wonder after Huggs first game. Good luck Mick!
