I made reference to some of the fan base needing a reality check during the Crosstown Shootout. It would be unfair for me not to explain in detail what I was referring to so here goes. Let's go player by player...

Troy Capuain- could be our best all our offensive player but shows lack of aggressiveness in key times. Has shown himself as someone is not 100% capable of running the show at the point. At times looks as if the offense is in slow motion when he handles the ball.

Kevin Johnson- is a good defensive player and a decent 3 point shooter. However he commits a lot of silly turnovers and sometimes gets lost of defense. Has shown zero ability to finish at the rim or even a willingness to attack it.

Jermaine Sanders- a "glue" guy. Best suited to come off the bench to give you mistake free solid basketball but was pressed into starting action. Has lost his 3 point stroke and lack of athleticism hurts on the defensive end.

Gary Clark- I have been really impressed with his back to the basket game and his nack for being right on time on the help side defense. Needs to develop a mid range jumpshot and cannot disappear from games like he has at times this season.

Octavious Ellis- good shot blocker who shows touch around the rim and plays with a passion and spark. However takes too many jumpers, is an overrated defender and doesn't attack nearly enough with his back to the basket.

Farad Cobb- a streaky 3 point shooter who has also shown the ability to penetrate the lane. He is not a great defensive player but can pick the pocket of opposing guards. Like KJ Cobb is loose with the ball and commits turnovers that a PG should never make.

DeShaun Mormon- our best perimeter defender and it's not even close. Attacks the rim and can finish in traffic. Has no jumpshot, plays too fast at times and commits too many silly turnovers.

Corentae DeBerry- our most underrated player. He is not the shot blocker Ellis is but is a better rebounder and more of an offensive game with his back to the basket. Needs to play with more toughness and contest post passes a little more.

Shaq Thomas- our best slasher and finisher at the rim. He is a freak of an athlete but takes too many jumpshots. Has shown the ability to get to the rim at will. Defensively he is good especially with his length but sags too much on 3 point shooters.

Quadri Moore- offensively he can be very very good. Shows great touch out to the 3 point line. But is very very raw. Turns the ball over going too fast, lazy and out of it on defense and doesn't look interested in rebounding. All of that and add in the fact he has the attitude problem and he could be on his way out.

So all in all here's what we have... A good defensive team with zero identitity on offense and players who are doing things that their skill set isn't suited for. Obviously not having Mick on the sideline has effected this team negatively. However even with him at the helm this team just isn't that good period. Temper your expectations soon or you'll just be letting yourself down. We lost a lot from last seasons team and gain a lot with the incoming class. Mick will add a big man and maybe a pure shooter if Moore is let go. The program is in good shape but sometimes fans act like we have the same amount of talent as a Duke or Kansas. We simply just don't.

People seriously underestimate how difficult it is to play a full 31 game schedule in college basketball, maybe not as much physically because these guys are in top shape but more so mentally. Kids get drained as the season wears on. Remember most of these kids are used to playing around 20-25 games, where only 4 or 5 are "high intensity." We really don't have enough guys that have gone through the grind already, so the team has worn down some. It will be a success if this team makes the NCAA tournament. Next we'll be back to the level we've been used to (5-6 seed, IMO).

Completely agree. I didn't expect much from this team because of youth and what we lost. I felt like in the beginning of the year some fans went above and beyond with their expectations. Everyone needs to pull back a little and see this current roster for what it is.

Idk. Most of these kids have been playing 5+ games every weekend from the time they are 12 y/o, if not younger during the spring AAU season in addition to another 2-3 games during the week plus practices (albeit not all AAU teams even have practices regularly due to how many games they play.

Add in the 20-30 game school team schedule pending on the state's rules ( some prep teams play a TON)

If anything the biggest change is probably the wait time between each game and the importance placed on each game coupled with practices and workouts being at a much higher intensity level.

I don't know anyone on the planet that has ever thought we have the talent of a Duke or Kansas. Our lack of legitimate talent has always been the argument of those who want to get to the next level. We're very fortunate to have achieved what we have over this period, because the talent just hasn't been here. That is on the coach. The fact that we have had some success with sub-par talent is also on the coach. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a talented roster.

Those games are not intense AT ALL. I've been to a ton of AAU events and half the kids aren't even trying on defense. Compare that to, as you mentioned, tough practices and high intensity games. Like I said it isn't necessary the physical aspect, it is the mental aspect of focusing in on the scouting report. The games only get tougher as the season wears on.

I really think if deberry can get down to 255 250 and work on conditioning more he could be a problem for a lot of teams. He's got great touch he's got a great looking free throw. You can tell he's still raw but, if he got a little quicker we would have to play him 20 mins a game next year.

Seems kinda casualfantake to call events, showcases, and such that play a large role in who gets ranked by what service, gets a D1 offer, impresses such and such assistant etc as low intensity. Those are super critical weekends for kids futures. I've also been to a lot of them too and it really just depends on the event and caliber of players + what point in the recruiting process kids are at...similarly to how a home game vs directional state university in November is gonna be different than the shootout in February.

Have said all season it will be a successful season if this team makes the tournament. I think the next two seasons the team will be very good but TC needs to play with the same chip on his shoulder he did against UCONN.

Gotta take issue with a few statements: KJ a decent 3 pt shooter...really? In what universe is 30% good? In fact, his % is the worst of any guard on the team.

Cobb loose with the ball? Among the 4 guards, he has, by far, the fewest to's per minutes played. The team in general makes too many turnovers, but if they collectively made them at Cobb's rate UC would have a couple more "W's"

I Say Again

I say again, the name of the game is being able to score. Yes, defense is 50% of the game, but 50% is failing in my book. UC has good athletes, they play hard, overall play good defense, etc. They really don't need every player to be an offensive player, but the problem is they do not even have one who is consistently good offensively. Not one!

I agree with a lot of what he said but I agree with you too. Also, DeBerry is NOT a better rebounder than Ellis.

Cobb is VERY loose with the ball it may not always result in a turnover but I would say for a guard his handling is average at best. DeBerry IMO if given the same minutes as Ellis he would outrebound him.

Well also in DeBerry's defense, it is hard for him to rebound in the zone bc he is usually rotating to the strong side on non-3 pt shots (aka non-long rebounds) and he's too slow to find someone to put a body on when he isn't manned up. So I guess we don't really know (since we don't like to put our players in a position to succeed). I'd still take Ellis over him in rebounding though.
