As the official start of the basketball season looms I wanted to put my thoughts down on what I expect for the new season. I believe that while there are certainly question marks; that this season also holds a lot of promise. Below I have put down my thoughts about my expectations and what I hope to see.

Backcourt:

As is case since he's been here, Cashmere Wright is the key to this UC offense. When he is healthy and relatively pain free, he adds an entirely different dimension to the offensive flow as well as to the defensive pressure that can be applied out front.

Word is that his offseason surgery has been successful and his health is the best it's been since his injury occurred his freshman year. If this is true that is a huge boost for this team. It should allow him better balance on his shot as well as enable him to get to the rim and finish. Strength as always been an issue for him and another year of maturity and strength training will benefit him greatly in this area.

Dion Dixon made a huge leap last season and with his work ethic I expect to see more improvement this season. That could well be expressed in his ability to shoot more consistently and taking on a greater role as a leader. With his athletic ability, Dion needs to get to the basket more. This will force defenders to stay back and help him to get more open looks from the perimeter. His strength and athleticism also makes him a dangerous defender. The biggest thing we need from Dion is for him to fight thru bad offensive days and contribute in other ways. Namely on defense and crashing the boards from the perimeter.

Jaquon Parker will benefit greatly from moving from the point to the wing. He has good size and from all indications he has had his best offseason since his arrival in Clifton. He will be asked to help fill the defensive void left by Davis and Bishop and how he responds to that will not only determine his playing time, but how well the Bearcats play on defense. Parker will be huge with the graduation of Bishop and the loss of Shaq for the season. He can give valuable minutes at both wing positions.

J.D. and Guyn give Cincinnati the most depth they've had at point guard perhaps since the 1992 season. Both have attributes that will help this team. They are physically strong and hard workers. Davis has the shooting ability to move over to the 2 and the savvy to score from the point. Guyn has the ability to be a defensive stopper and be a major assest on the press.

Small Forward

Sean Kilpatrick will get the nod here to start the season in my opinion. Like many of the Bearcats, Sean is a gym rat. If he finds consistency on his shot, Killa can be a scoring machine. He has to be able to guard on the wing and eliminate mental lapses when he is playing defense. Ball handling has also been an issue and he has worked hard to improve this area of his game. He is at his best when he attacks and takes open shots rather than settle for jump shots. I look for him to have a big offensive season but his defense will determine if he starts or comes off the bench.

Jermaine Sanders is a do everything kind of guy. He brings a high basketball iq and a good shooting touch. His role becomes more critical with the loss of Thomas. He is at his best in a structured offense and people will see a different player then the one they saw in the DSL. Again, defense will be the key with him. How has his body responded to better conditioning and has it improved his lateral quickness? If he hasn't improved in this area look for him to get spot minutes and Parker to fill the role as back up in this position.

Low Post

Yancy Gates is the rock for this team. When the offense runs thru him this team is very efficient. Gates has lost weight and is even in better shape than last season. If he stops thinking before making his moves and uses his new found quickness to his advantage, Yancy could have a monster season. More importantly he has to be a force rebounding. When he is motivated to do so, he has the abilty. If we see the Yancy we saw to end the season this team will be dangerous.

Cheikh Mobodji could be a real sleeper for this team. He is an upgrade from last season and will provide some relief for Yancy. He will rebound and block shots and be a great compliment to Gates in this area. The best part about him is he can make the midrange shot or play with his back to the basket. Him and Yancy could well make up the best low post tandem in the Cronin era.

Justin Jackson is the hustle guy every team needs. Play defense, rebound the basketball, and give your team an edge on the 50-50 balls. He has to improve his free throw shooting and slow himself down and not commit stupid fouls. Jackson also has the ability to take other low post guys off the dribble and has to utilize his ability to shoot out to 15 feet.

Gaines is another player that should help in blocking shots, rebounding and playing defense. Yancy Gates said he is by far the most athletic of the UC bigs. He is a hard worker and got a lot of one on one coaching while sitting last season. He has to provide solid minutes while in the game. Just concentrate on rebounding and defense and any offense will be a bonus.

Ellis gives Mick some versatility. He can be a Darnell Wilks type player who could spell both the 3 and 4 positions. His lack of weight and strength could hurt him initially. Ellis was a one time top 135 player but his work ethic and inability to control his emotions hurt his development. He is young and Mick has shown he won't tolerate bad attitudes. He could help the Bearcats where they are thin at the 3 in certain match ups.

Offensive consistency and defense will be the keys to this season. We know Mick will put an emphasis on defense and the ability to play it will determine players minutes. To move to elite status in the Big East UC has to be able to score consistently. Last season it was like pulling teeth at times.

I truly believe this team has top 5 potential in league play. If they can play solid defense, get consistent efforts from Gates, Kilpatrick and Dixon, and Cash stays healthy, this team could be the best we've seen in years. Freshmen aren't Freshmen like they used to be, but there is still a huge learning curve and how they adapt to the fast, stronger play at the high D1 level will go a long way in determing if this team can play fast or must grind it out and rely on their upperclassmen to completely carry the load.

I love the depth and the ability of the newcomers. Cheikh will be a good addition. Question marks remain at the small forward position and how this team plays defense. I believe they will rebound and block shots. Overall I'm going to predict a 4th place finsih in the Big East and a trip to the sweet 16. Bold I know, but I think the pieces are in place to do both.

Hell of a rundown Bearcat Jeff...i am getting very excited for the season to begin, and i too feel as though this team has the depth and skill to be a threat in the league and tourney...lets hope your prediction comes to fruition...
Go Bearcats!

Great analysis, Jeff. Definitely looking forward to this season. But I think Ellis may red-shirt as well as Shaq, just don't think he would contribute much if anything if he played. Anyway, start of practice just 2 days away, or does it begin tomorrow night? Can't wait. GO BEARCATS!!!

We'll see about Ellis. I think the loss of Shaq opens the door for Ellis to remain on the active roster. Not discounting the possibility but I've heard he can play the 3 in certain situations.

as is, ellis is #12 in the rotation. you can't realistically play 12 people and have it be worthwhile for a freshman to blow a year of eligibility. from what i have heard from my people about him- he has a lot of work to do. i would be surprised if he does not redshirt.

Wouldn't surprise me either way dp. I think the team is fine either way it goes. My personal opinion is it would be best for him to sit. That would also help balance the classes more evenly. I'm just saying it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't.

You have Gates, Gaines, Jackson, Mbodji in the post and Killa,, Sanders, Parker and Dixon who could all slide over to fill the 3 wing. Numbers would be fine unless you have a low post injury and with his body right now, not sure Ellis could help there anyway.

Ellis is no where near ready to compete, if they redshirt him and Shaq it will be a good for the future and it balances the classes better.

This is what needs to go "right" for UC to have a very successful season:

1. Yancy Gates needs to be the late season version, rather than the St. Johns version
2. Cashmere Wright needs to stay healthy, and be an effective leader like the UL game
3. JaQuan Parker needs to have a Larry Davis type year as a good spark of the bench, he is the only guy with experience there.
4. Cheikh Mdjobi (sp) needs to be a starter and play good minutes, don't trust Gaines behind him.
5. SK's defense has to be much better, as well as the team D.
5. One Freshman has to step up and be a key contributor in every big game.

If those 6 things go right, UC can be in the top 6 in the Big East. Those are the keys IMO.

I think Gaines will be ok in the role he will be filling. Look for a primary rotation of Cheikh and Gates starting with Jackson coming in and shifting either Gates or Cheikh to the others position for a few minutes and then whoever came out going back in to spell the other. I think Gaines will see approximately 12 minutes a game for defense and rebounding unless he has vastly improved.

Wow, a thread about UC sports and now about conference reshuffling! :)

Nice job Jeff! Looking forward to this season.

I would like to hope that Gaines sees max 12 minutes. Last I heard, he still had a lot of work to be done to be an effective player on the court. Hopefully I am wrong on that.

Regardless, some of the best teams in the country year in and year out only play a rotation of 8 players. i am not accusing you of this, but i think uc fans in general get very wrapped up in playing 11 or 12 players. unless roles are very, very clearly defined, playing that many players usually leads to chaos- think UC or Texas two years ago. if we stay healthy and have parker and jackson contribute- we know we have 7 viable players. if sanders can hit shots the ways its been reported he is at practice, i think its undeniable he will see some minutes. one of the two freshmen point guards has to play some spot minutes as well. as is- we have nine definite players.

i do not foresee depth being a serious issue for this team. uc isn't going to press for 40 minutes- i.e. be a team that requires 10-11 capable bodies. they had the chance to be that team last year, and instead elected to only press in spurts. maybe if they bring in obekpa and add him to gaines, ellis, jackson, and mbodji (not sure how athletic he is yet) next year- they would have a lineup that is truly suited prepared to press for 40 minutes.

regardless, uc isnt going to be a team that presses for 40 minutes a game this year, and even if only 8 or 9 guys play this year- the team will be fine in terms of depth.

I think the primary rotation will be Cash, Davis or Guyn, Dixon, Parker, Kilpatrick, Sanders, Gates, Mbodji, and Jackson.

I also think you will see more match up zone this season and about the same amount of press. When they do press my thought is you'll see Guyn instead of Davis on the floor.

I'm not in disagreement with you at all.

Most fan bases think like that. When you have recruits come in everyone wants to expect the best out of all of them and hope they all play. Unfortunately not all of these guys are going to pan out like we'd hope. Thats why I think UC will have at the most a 10 man rotation (8 playing significant minutes, and 2 for foul trouble/match up situations). I actually think with Mooj they may be able to press a lot more, I've read that he is awfully athletic and quick. I think they should use the press more this year, however it won't effect the rotation.

Parker has really developed especially thru his shoulders and arms. I'm really happy to see the work he has put in. Many, myself included, felt he could be a real sleeper coming out of high school. He had a nice freshman year but let himself down last season by not putting in the needed work on his own. That doesn't appear to be the case this season.

I cannot wait for this season to start.. The cats have the athletes to compete and this season will be fun to watch.. I say if they get the right matchups they could go to the elite eight!!

Have you seen parker?

Yes, but I have not seen him playing but he looks in much better physical condition to me. Sanders looks better than 3 months ago, Yancy looks great, and Parker looks great. Those are the 3 that stand out the most to me physically. Kelvin Gaines is slender (not skinny) but has good muscle definition in his arms and shoulders. Jackson looks to have added a little bulk if not weight. Ellis looks a lot bigger than in HS but has a ways to go. Like I said, overall this team looks to be in very good physical condition to start the season. If they are going m2m and pressing that is a good start.

I expect Mick to have another great coaching year and I expect a meltdown at WVU now that all of John Belein's recruits are gone.

WVU may drop off this season and they may not. If they do it'll be because of youth. Bob Huggins is bringing in some very good talent and as we know he is a very good coach.

But this is a thread about UC and their season. Ralph if you'd like to post this season don't start hijacking threads before the season even starts.
