I understand the humor in this video, but that game reminded me of what Huggs brought to UC. He, as I am sure many coaches nationwide are, is more than a coach to his kids. He always seemed to be a father to his guys. Whether it was having them over for holiday meals or celebrations, or consoling them in moments such as the Butler injury. Every year I looked forward to Senior night, because for those few minutes the true love was evident in Huggs mannerisms and body, as he expressed his appreciation for his warriors. I was fortunate to be neighbors with some basketball players my freshman and sophomore years. They always talked about how tough Huggs was everyday and his tough love, but he seemed to truly care. I remember watching this game with Butler at WVU, and I couldn't help but remember those senior nights at UC. Again, I understand the humor, but I respect the hell out of Huggs for his connection with his players. I think this year, Cronin is starting to establish a closer connection with his guys, and earning their respect. I am no coach, nor will I probably have the opportunity to be a coach, but I want to think that building that relationship and mutual respect with the players has to be the most rewarding part of the job. On a side note, despite his record this year, the talk of Butch Jones developing the 'family' relationship on the football team made me respect his efforts. The same with Jones as it is for Cronin, build and earn the respect of the players, and the wins will come.
