With 7:07 remaining in regulation, Yancy Gates exited the game and took a seat on the bench. To this point, he contributed 14 points, three rebounds and two blocks.

He was a member of the starting five which played together for all of a 21-2 run at the end of the first half that placed UC in control of this critical conference match with Marquette.

Yet, for the rest of regulation and five minutes of overtime, the most dominant physical presence for the Bearcats didn't move. He sat on the bench.

"I was concerned they were really starting to exploit him defensively," Cronin said. "I saw it going the wrong way."

The oddity of this matchup with Marquette was it pitted Cincinnati and its size of Gates and Toyloy, who both weight more than 255 pounds at 6-foot-9, up against the speed of a diminutive Marquette team without a single major contributor taller than 6-6 or heavier than 225 pounds.

Not sure why Gates didn't play that much, especially at the end of the game. He was doing ok inside. In fact, I would have worked every other time down the court into Gates....make them sink two guys on him. I can only think that Mick saw something he didn't like.

This was a classic example of what we all debated before the game. Should we change to their style or do we make them change to us. We got our answer.

IMO, I think it's always good to go out and play your game. Make other teams change their style to play you, not the other way around. I believe tha the teams that go out every night playing their style and making other teams change what they do, are usually the good teams.

At some point, Mick needs to figure out what was working and go with it. Gates....was working.

That is good and all, but when we tried to do that we were getting run off the court in the first half. When we switched to the 4 guard offense we really competed with them and honestly should have won the game. It was a well coached game except for the last possession IMO. For that we should have called a timeout, put Yancy and Lance back in, and should have driven to the hole instead of Bishop shoot a 3. That was a costly mistake by Mick. That and once again our free throw shooting was horrible. Also, does DV not know how to play suffocating defense on Lazar Hayward. Those final three's he made were from a breakdown from DV and if DV just would have been in his face I think they would have been prevented.

I agree that Gates should have seen some time in the final minutes or overtime, but come on the guy was getting burnt all day. His offensive output equaled his defensive output in a negative manner, thus me believing the reason he wasnt in the game at the end. But still at least for the final couple possessions put him in for offense then take him out for defense!

On D, Gates should not be venturing out far to 'help' with screens. If Mick used him solely in the post on offense, he'd be avg 15/game. Should have been on the court when UC had the ball at the end.
