Some argue he shouldn't be starting this year, or playing as many minutes as he gets. Perhaps he exudes a quiet confidence, as opposed to leadership by example, or the laid back attitude could be a sign of a lack of aggressiveness.
However he performs this year, will he be remembered as someone who helped bridge the talent gap, or as someone who regressed later in his career?

The only good to come from the Mick era...Just kidding. I feel bad for him, He carried this team for 3 years and this was suppose to be the season he got a feel for the NCAA tournament. He will be remembered by having really good 3 seasons only to dissipoint his last year.

The player that saved UC basketball. I know it looks bad now, things seem to be getting better, but without him things could be a lot worse. He gave hope to UC fans.

Its hard to imagine he was available 4 years ago. He certainly won some games early on in his career and kept the team in other games. I thought he would get better as he got older and they added more talent but it has not happened. I certainly will remember him as the best player in a down time.

It won't be from his leadership. I mentioned earlier today how UC has lacked leadership...and my best guess would be since Hicks and Co departed. Here's an excerpt from katz.

--It was striking to me that Gates and Deonta Vaughn entered the postgame presser joking with each other and with smiles on their faces. This isn't a new phenomenon either. Not that I'm saying these games - and losses - don't matter to these players, because I'm sure they do. I just wondered if they feel any sense of desperation as the season begins drawing to a close and seemingly they're, once again, outside looking in for an NCAA tournament berth.

I asked Vaughn about that afterward - if he felt desperate now that UC has slipped to 5-6 in the conference.

"Not too much worried about that right now," he said. "We know we have some winnable games still ahead of us and in the Big East tournament. We still know what we have to do to get a win. We let it slip away against a good team. We still know we have to keep playing. Don't worry about what everybody thinks about us as a team."
