I keep being told that i got everyones expectations of the program all wrong. So lets note down what our expectations of the next regime at UC basketball should look like:

Next tourney Appearance: 2021
Top 25 recruiting classes in the next 3 years: 1
# of sweet 16's in the next 5 years 2
# of elite 8's: 1
# of tourney appearences in next 5 seasons: 3
Winning percentage over next years: 80%
AAC Titles in next 5 years: 2
AAC Conference champs in next 5 years: 2
Players drafted: 2
5 Star players recruited: 0
Wining record vs Top 25 in 5 year period: YES

Haven't had a top 25 recruiting class in what? 15+ years? But let's hold Brannen to that in his first 3....

Will someone with brain cells just lock this thread already?

Mick Cronin 13 years.

2 regular season conference titles
2 conference tourney titles (took him 11 years)
9 NCAA tournaments
1 sweet 16
0 elite eights
0 final fours

6-9 ncaa record

I expect Brannen to beat that.

I can do this but will do for the next 13 years because lets be honest, that's what we were judging Mick on.

Next tourney Appearance: 2021 I think is reseansonable.
Top 25 recruiting classes in the next 13 years: 3
# of sweet 16's in the next 13 years: 4
# of elite 8's in the next 13 years: 2
# of tourney appearences in next 13 seasons: 8
Winning percentage over next 13 years: Who cares?
AAC Titles in next 13 years: 7
AAC Conference champs in next 13 years: 4
Players drafted: 3
5 Star players recruited: 2
Wining record vs Top 25 in 13 year period: Yes

Was looking through the recruiting classes on 247 and UC had one top 50 class in the last 5 years with 0 being top 25. Glad to see you're keeping your expectations realistic.

So let me get this straight Justin. Brannen has about 1/3 of the time to match, and in some cases, best Mick Cronin's accomplishments that took him 13 years to rack up?? If there's anything that has helped me move on from Mick Cronin and the ill effects of him leaving, it's attitudes like yours. So from the bottom of my heart I say thank you. I'm all in with CJB and the upcoming seasons. Let's f-cking go boys.

I’d assume Cronins best recruiting class was Yancy Gates and cashmere wright Yancy was like #27 and cash was like #63

LMFAO wow. What type of fanbase could be upset with 9 straight tournament appearances, conference championships and two straight conf tournament championships. Then have the Gaul to actually act like his leaving is no big deal while venreating this nobody coach, and I'm not even trying to act like Cronin is some savant. The whole coaching staff, roster and recuriting has declined for a reason... And it's not all bc of four weeks. What recuit has Brannnen ever wooed look em up. Wherever he's been at bama, nku what recuits? I wont be happy with this hire until he proves me wrong

I'll go with 5 years as I think that is a pretty fair period of evaluation.
Next tourney Appearance: 2021-22 season.
Top 25 recruiting classes in the next 5 years: 0 (might get close next year because quantity effects class ranking as much as quality).
# of sweet 16's in the next 5 years 1

I don’t think it’s easy making 9 straight tournaments but I can tell you the type of fan that can still have a problem with it. Out of those 9 years I think we have had one “contender”. A team that has a reasonable expectation for a F4. If you use our seed it’s the only team that was even supposed to make the sweet 16 if you were going by chalk.

When Huggins was here I felt like a contender about one out of every 2-3 years after he made the final 4. Just eeking into the tournament doesn’t really get my gears pumping. Sure the ride is fun getting there and there is still a hope and prayer...but I don’t want to kid myself too much.

Anyway, it is possible to appreciate both

Nicely said.

Just to illustrate this point a bit more. Huggins had 9 years (out of 14) as a top 4 seed, 7 years as a top 3, and 5 as a top 2. If you get a protected seed I think there is at least a reasonable chance at a F4 whether you make it there or not. Cronin has had 1 top 4 seed and it was a 2 seed.

I would rather be in the dance than not. But if you told me we could go 6 of 9 years instead of all 9 and we could enter the dance with a protected seed in 3 of them. I would probably trade that out for 1 of 9.

I can appreciate the consistency of getting there. I think 9 of 9 with Cronin and 14 of 14 with Huggins is obviously a very high bar so I don't even expect that to continue. But if and when we do make it I would like to believe we are contenders (not pretenders) in 1 out of 3 appearances.

Maybe it's asking too much from an AAC team...but that is what my hopes are. Not even sure that is what my expectations are. I think regular season is about half the fun...maybe even 2/3rds of the fun...but the NCAA tourney is still a big deal to me.

you can build programs in the AAC. Houston is proof. Sampson got there 5 years ago, 13-19 first season and if not for a fluke shot vs Michigan would have back to back sweet 16s.

Im really not sure where this idea that if you're in the AAC you can't recruit and shouldn't even think about tournament success. Thats complete bullcrap.

Mick had multiple recruiting classes that were top 26, and top 31. So if Brannen is indeed a better recruiter then top 25 should be fine for him.

He has a brand new arena to work with and god facilities. He has zero excuses not to land a top 25 class

We have been to 9 straight tourneys so that part is definitely doable. What I am referring to is getting up to that next level. We either have to up recruiting or up coaching or both to get on that Gonzaga level.

Even if we maintain the Cronin level of recruiting...but it is more focused on offense than defense...perhaps that is the bump we need who knows. So a 3 star defensive specialist vs a 3 star offensive specialist are two completely different ways to go about things. The recruit will likely be missing something if they are 3 stars whether it's skills or athleticism.

Now if we can start landing more in that 4 star range we can expect them to have more of both skills and athleticism. That is the range we need to tap into more...and if we don't then we have to believe recruiting offense with an offensive minded coach is a better recipe.

Seriously, if we go from one 4 star guy every year to 1.5...then we just added 2 more talented guys to the roster over a 4 year stretch than we are used to. That seems like a significant bump to me...not a marginal one.

Jermaine Sanders and Shaq Thomas was one of his best ranked classes...nuff said.

For me the expectations aren’t too different from mick. After 10 years, mick got this thing rolling. Aside from tournament wins. I don’t expect it to take as long as mick because the situations are different but it could take 3 years to see if it is going in the right direction. I also think we could be in the tournament next year if Jarron comes back. At least be a bubble team. Bringing back one of the best players in the country never hurts.

I also expect better recruiting. Not 5 stars, not even 4 stars, (some 4 stars), but top 150-200 guys. There will be unranked, role player guys, I just want a couple more high profile guys on the roster. No idea if we will be able to do that but that is my expectations.

I keep being told that i got everyones expectations of the program all wrong. So lets note down what our expectations of the next regime at UC basketball should look like:

Wining record vs Top 25 in 5 year period: YES

Just so we're clear on the Top 25/Ranked portion:
  • Mick's Win/Loss Record against ranked opponents (Last 5 years): 8-18, 31% Winning Percentage
  • Mick's Win/Loss Record against ranked opponents in OUR CONFERENCE (Last 5 years): 4-7, 36% Winning Percentage
