Rumor is the man is Matt James, and that Luke Massa was present with him. I'm not breaking the story, as it's over twitter and other boards as well.

I pray it's not true.

Someone just posted this..

Cincinnati news has confirmed Matt's death. Prayers for him and his family.

FOX 28 confirmed at 10:00 Friday night through a source close to the Notre Dame football program that Notre Dame offensive lineman recruit Matt James has died after falling off a balcony in Florida.

Forget about a young man who was a football star. This story is about a son, a teammate and a very popular high school student who happens to be a prized Notre Dame Football recruit. Matt James, a 6' 7" 290 pound offensive lineman from Cincinnati, Ohio has died at a hotel in Panama City, Florida. James reportedly fell off a balcony while there on Spring Break.

James was an amazing lineman. He was a first team All-American by USA Today. He played in the US Army All-American game in San Antonio, Texas. He went to high school powerhouse St. Xavier in Cincinnati. Along with Christian Lombard, they were the jewels of Coach Kelly's first recruiting class and thought to be huge building blocks for the future of the Notre Dame Football program.

Students at St. Xavier High in Cincinnati -- already hit with one senseless death earlier this school year when another classmate was hit by a car and killed last September -- set up an impromptu vigil for one of the community's rising stars late Friday night, as well as a Facebook group with nearly 2,900 members as of 6 a.m. ET. Last month, St. Xavier coach Steve Specht told an Irish Web site James was "the biggest freshman who ever walked through the doors" at the school, but was "just so clumsy" that coaches weren't sure he'd ever be able to play. Friday night, Specht described James as a "perfect" player to the site, but didn't get much further because, he said, "I just can't do this right now."

Call me ignorant, and that's fine but people make choices. Often times bad ones.

Kids aren't exactly known for making intelligent choices. He sounds pretty mature for his age, and certainly valued academics by choosing UC/OSU/ND among his finalists.
However, I can assure you that a number of 'good kids' that I hung out with in HS and college put themselves in many a precarious situation. Most are now very successful, but made (as parents we in hindsight call) bad choices.

It would be best to simply call this a tragedy, than to shrug it off to a bad choice. I certainly wouldn't have the history to say anything.
