I am a little worried about the center position right now. I keep hearing about the improvement from Mooj but I haven't seen it yet. I appreciate that he really worked his butt off in the off season...but so far the only thing I have seen is more athletecism. Through 2 games there is one stat that just jumps off the page at me. Not the points...the rebounds.

Through 2 exhibition games Mooj has 6 rebounds in 43 minutes. Nyarcuk has 7 rebounds in 26, Rubles (from the 4) has 14 in 49, and Gaines has 7 rebounds in 10 minutes. Now I know what you are going to say...yah it's just two games and it's exhibition. But...I would add that his numbers should be better in exhibition and I looked into some stats from last year.

Last year when Gaines was in the game he was twice as effective on the boards per minute played (literally I checked), twice as many blocks per minute, and scored about the same amount of points per minute. They fouled at a similar rate, Gaines stole the ball at a rate 3 times higher, although Gaines did turn the ball over about twice as often.

Now, I assume Gaines just doesn't know where he is going on D? But I am wondering just what it is that Mooj is giving us. it certainly isn't points. Is it so important that we would sacrifice all those extra rebounds, blocks, and steals? That is exactly what we need at the 5 this year if there isn't going to be scoring...we need the rebounds and D. So I assume Mooj is MUCH better at knowing where to be and when (on offense and D)...because thats the only thing I can think of.

At this point since we now have Rubles (and becuase I want both he and JJ on the court)...I would actually think about experimenting with JJ at the 5. He is better at scoring, he likes to block shots, he can't be much worse at rebounding. I like the fire that JJ brings and I would like to see Rubles on the court too. Nyarcuk looked a bit slow in footwork...players were dribbling around him...but he makes up for that with wingspan I guess.

There are 4 options...what should we do? I think we should give it a little time...but if there isn't some noticeable improvement I think we need to mix it up. This team (if it remains healthy knock on wood) will go as far as the 5 position will allow. If we can get great D and 8 rebounds per game from the starter I will be content.

I'm SO excited about Rubles, he is a steal. When I saw JJ at DSL, he looked like his game is ready to take the next step. Cheikh will be fine, I think, we are only 2 games in. Gaines has actually looked much better, but he is still not a finished product for sure. David has really impressed me so far. I don't think, besides Gaines, that any of these big men would mess anything up. Our offense has had great flow so far this year, so all our big guys need to do is play good d, block a shot or two, rebound, and don't mess anything up on offense, and I think these guys could easily fill that role enough to be effective this year.

I am probably over-reacting. If we can get 6 rebounds from Mooj in 25 minutes I will be content. I just went back and looked at rebound averages from guys like Hicks, Gates, and Maxiel. Rounding off they were between 8-10 and they each played over 30 minutes per game. Maxiel was at about 8 but he played with Hicks who averaged 9 that year and Hicks averaged almost 10 the next year. Last year Gates averaged 9. So I guess I can't expect a lot more from Mooj.

I will lay off the guy unless 5 games in he is averaging 4 or so. Right now he is averaging 3 per about 20 minutes played which equates to 4 given he plays 25 minutes. That won't cut it...but maybe it's just been the luck of the bounce so far. Last year he was getting 2 rebounds per 10 minutes which equates to 6 per 30 minutes...that won't cut it either. It should be closer to 9 per 30 minutes played...especially since we are playing 4 perimeter guys and he's not responsible for scoring.

Mbodj has been going for blocks a lot and that puts you out of position for rebounding. I think Mick's fine with that because our guards are good at crashing the boards to back up the bigs in these cases.

On record saying it wouldn't surprise me if Nyarsuk is starting in January at some point. Mbodji looks much more agile and mobile but hi rebounding is a disappointment so far. Mick has been on him about it. I have always been excited about Gaines. He hasn't played ball long but he is a freak athlete. If he can put that together with an improved iq he would be something at least defensively and on the boards. He simply brings an attitude and I love it! All that said, is we can get 8-12 points and 12-15 rebounds from these guys I think we'll be fine. rubles will rebound and UC is one of the best perimeter rebounding teams in the country imo.

Keep in mind that Gaines got a lot of his playing time in last year when we played the scrap opponents, not freakishly tough and athletic Big East foes. On paper, yeah, Gaines looks like he deserves more PT. But Cronin knows better than any of us do. I bet he'd get seriously roughed up playing tough opponents, which is why he never gets any PT against them.

Mbodj does have 8 blocks in 2 games so far which is strong. He does have to rebound better though. We have rebounded well as a team so far but it will only get more difficult as the year goes on.

We were not a good rebounding team last year and that challenge will only be more difficult since we lost Yancy.

Rebounding is a concern but I actually think we'll be okay(not great or even good) at the 5 spot. 1-4 will be pretty damn solid. The depth shouldn't get us killed at any point. Mbodj has improved, he's not a great rebounder but he's doing other things. Nyarsuk(sp?) is promising and so is Gaines.

Well I am VERY happy with rebounding so far through two games. I think a lot of that has to do with JJ and Rubles as well as our guards. If Mooj can continue to block 4 shots a game and provide great D and the rest of the team keeps rebounding...I think we can do big things this year.

JJ is averaging 9.5. Rubles about 7. Mooj about 6 and Nyarcuk about 5. SK and Parker are good rebounding guards with about 4 per game. If we keep this up we are golden.

Don't take too much away from opposing teams that probably don't crack the Top 200. I bet my right arm Mbodj doesn't average 4 blocks a game the whole season.

And I will bet my left arm he doesn't either (it's just a flesh wound). However, if he can average two blocks a game in Beast play...that will be pretty darn good.

You don't have to see him play in the Beast to notice that he is jumping around like he wants to be a human fly swatter. He's much more atheletic this year and very active out there. I wish his hands weren't made of steel because he gets his hands on a lot more rebounds than he actually comes away with. Contrast that with JJ and JJ probably nabs about 90% of the balls he touches. Mooj is like 60-70%.
