as i look at various websites and reports regarding the brawl on saturday, i am frustrated at the images and angles being presented...on numerous websites and stories, the only pics being shown are those of UC players...i have yet to see a photo of Mark Lyons throwing a punch or punches (which also is being failed to be reported) or Wells' initial shove...i have not read one national website that mentions Tu admitting to talking to the UC bench nad coaches the entire game...no website is reporting Frease's actions towards the UC fans and families...all the nation is seeing is his bloodied face...no mention of his head butt, nor his stomping of another athlete...it is frustrating to me because nationally, it looks like this was a one-sided fight and Xavier was only a small part...and since Xavier is Xavier (thanks to the respect earned from quality coaching and approach of Prosser and Miller), they are getting a free pass...as a college, they failed miserably in taking responsibility and holding people accountable, but all the nation is writing about and hearing is Mick was all bark...granted, some and very few journalists presented the whole story from both sides...due to the media or failure to review the full story, a national perception of UC is growin...just not in a good way and opposite of what Cronin has been working so hard to establish...keep up the great work Cronin...hopefully the truth will shine through, but it does not seem likely in today's media and coverage...
Go Bearcats!

Dan Patrick has killed Yancy Gates but has really layed into Tu Holloway.

UC worked hard to get rid of that rep and it has come back for some in one terrible incidient.

XU is getting a poor rep the last couple years.

Both need to get a grip.

People who went to those schools. If the first thing people think about when thinking of University of Cincinnati is basketball thugs it is not good.

Prove your theory! Its impossible to prove that UC athletics has a negative affect in students attaining a job post college.

Finding a job in todays society is less and less about your academics and more and more about who you know.

I think where you graduate can certainly have an effect on the type of job you can get. I also think people do not want others to think bad about their school.

You do not care because you didnt go to UC and your only association is the bball team.

I had a grad school interview in Florida the day after Huggins got arrested. The director of the program asked me about it immediately knowing that I went to UC. It was embarrassing to say the least.

It's amazing how little other fans, even in our own conference, know about UC's recent teams. I keep hearing they are and always will be thugs. Thugs? If anything, a lot of our fans think some of our guys are too soft, especially Gates. Outside of the court the APR is great and there have been little to no incidents.

This is what bugs the hell out of me. Most articles I am reading bring up Hugs Thugs. That was 6,7 years ago. We have completely done a 180 since Hugs and Kennedy have left and now all of a sudden were Thugs again. Not a single article has mentioned how this is a first time incident and we have students who follow through on there duties and have graduated playing basketball not gangsters.
Some sports writers are so unintelligent and lazy cough cough Goodman. They can't spend five more seconds researching a story? It's absolutely ignorant.

This will help the rivarly.
This will help recruiting.
This will help attendance.
This will help young men grow up.

Time to make some good out of a terrible terrible situation.

I don't think the national perception is a huge issue, the nation will move on from this pretty quickly. In the grand scheme of things no one outside of Cincinnati really cares about our Crosstown rivalry game. People may talk about it here and there for the remainder of the season but it will fade away eventually.

I really believe that had either of the two coaches been more proactive this never would have happened. It seems like Mick made some attempts to get the ref's more involved and it doesn't seem like Mack really did a whole lot of anything to help the situation. What Mick or Mack should have done is called a TO with a minute remaining. Had one coach approached the other to try to calm the situation down none of this happens. Had one coach had the foresight to pull their players from the game this never would have happened.

Oh well, what's done is done.....life goes on.

I'm not really sure how this is any different than the Reds fighting the Cardinals. Where was the outrage when that happened? Why is this situation treated so differently than that situation?

Because everyone knows "bench clearing brawls" in baseball are the softest fights of any sport. :D

Baseball sucks, but their "brawls" are even worse. Does the bullpen really have to run out there just to stand? They literally never do anything besides stand around, basically the whole team never does anything. You may get a shove, benches clear, and a lot of nothing going on.

Idk I saw alot of swings and misses saturday. YO! ;)

Two comments:

1, Sponsors and donors care about national and more so local perception

2, This is a bigger issue than baseball because it's a predominantly black sport. the word "thugs" never gets thrown around in baseball. I don't mean to start a race debate here, but thems are the facts, I read plenty of national message boards and it's insane how quickly and often race comes up

I'll say one thing about the national perception.

Had the cameras been on the other side of the court and given Guyn the cover that Holloway got, the story would be completely different.

It would have shown Holloway getting in the face of a Freshman, slapping him, and then Guyn doing nothing and Wells coming in and mugging him for no reason.

Gates still probably would have gotten six games and been vilified (and rightly so for his lack of control), but Xavier's reputation would have been really tarnished and maybe resulted in them getting the thug label. If the replays being played on sportscenter showed a player with a national profile like Holloway started that brawl by slapping a freshman, they probably would have focused on him and brought up his past incidents of the punch last year and the butler game.

Cronin still would have given harsher punishments than Xavier and they would have looked a complete joke for starting a fight up 23 on their home floor with 9 seconds left.

But the cameras were on the other side and the unbelievably bad luck for UC continues.
