Cincy fans, I love ya. Really do.

I understand that your stadium is centrally located in the center of campus. I realize that it's a great community atmosphere. I have even pulled for the Bearcats on many occasions over the last few years.

But please, play every game on the road.

I simply cannot bear watching games played at Nippert Stadium.

And I really don't know what it is.

The stadium looks nice and seems rather cozy for a rising Big East football program, but I just find it horribly outdated for some reason.

Maybe it's the turf, or lack of rabid, crazy fans going nuts.

Just do something about it, please!

"I simply cannot bear watching games played at Nippert Stadium.
And I really don't know what it is."

Well, can't argue with the logic behind that statement.

While there are many things that are great about Nippert; taken as a whole; it is a sorry excuse for a stadium for a BCS school. I never could understand the allure for some, when there are only 15,000 in there, it is ok; but put over 30,000 in it and it is deficient in a major way. The facility is outdated, to say the least, and there is no way you can improve this turkey enough to become an adequate stadium. If UC wants to stay "mid major" or not really a good football program in the college football world of perception, then keep it.

Nippert Stadium featured more brand new amenities in 2005. A new, permanent grandstand provides new and improved seating in the North endzone. Underneath the structure are new game locker rooms for both the Bearcats and the visiting team.

The scoreboard features a new video board, nearly twice as large as the previous display, while the playing field is a new installation of FieldTurf, the grass-like artificial turf.

These are just the latest enhancements which preserve the rich history and tradition of Nippert Stadium while making it a contemporary place in which to play and watch a game.

Nippert Stadium has been home to Bearcats football since 1902, making it the fourth-oldest playing site and fifth-oldest stadium in college football.

The stadium's founder was Arch Carson, who as captain and principal organizer, played a significant role in starting football on the UC campus in 1885. In 1901 as physical director of the university, Carson guided the construction of the field which was later named for him-the playing surface is still called Carson Field.

In 1916, construction began on a permanent brick-and-concrete stadium structure, which was completed, section-by-section, as funds were raised.

During the season-ending clash with rival Miami (Ohio) in 1923, Jimmy Nippert sustained a spike wound injury and died a month later from blood poisoning. His grandfather, James N. Gamble of Procter and Gamble, provided the funds needed to complete the horseshoe-shaped structure, and the James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium was dedicated on Nov. 8, 1924.

Nippert Stadium has undergone a series of expansions. In 1936, the playing field was lowered 12 feet to allow spectator seating to increase to 24,000. The Reed Shank Pavilion was added in 1954 to bring the capacity to 28,000. In 1991, the capacity was upped to 35,000 through extending the upper deck, now called the Herschede-Shank Pavilion, and a new pressbox was constructed.

Artificial turf was first installed in 1970 and in 2000, the stadium became one of the first in the U.S. to utilize FieldTurf, a grass-like synthetic surface.

Early-century brickwork combined with wrought iron gates and trim give Nippert a comfortable old-time stadium charm and appeal, while continuing renovations have enabled it to remain a classic showplace for college football.

Terribly misguided. I think you should call AAA and move away. Mid -major --funny! Reading the dictionary or Jay Bilas's cliff notes!

I am refering to the facility, they should tear it down, no way can they fix it up enough to be a respectable BCS caliber stadium. Defending Nippert is an example of provincialism at it's worst.

Provincialism? Hardly. More along the lines of having pride in an amazingly historic facility. I'd much rather the University knock down the buildings arround Nippert and build the stadium up (how feasible this is is beyond me) rather than scrap the whole place in favor of moving off campus (Paul Brown? No thanks).

Sure, the amenities aren't the greatest (for now), the lines are long for the bathrooms and it's extremely crowded when the game is anywhere near sold out... But the atmosphere, in my opinion, is second to none. I've been to the Shoe, I've been to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and I would take Nippert over those any day. Not to say I wouldn't love an additional 10-20,000 plus in capacity, but we have something that I don't believe any other university in the nation can match.

Again in reference to your statement, "respectable" is in the eye of the beholder. I will be greatly disappointed with the University if even the idea is suggested that games be moved off campus on a permanent basis.

Some former Bearcats address this very issue in the next installment about the Commandos. Check it out. Should have it posted on Mon or Tues.

I have been to many of the stadiums around the country and none compare to Nippert. The location and look are so unique. I would be furious if they ever decided to stop playing our games there.

Every other stadium is way off to the side of campus.

Nippert has it's flaws to be sure but it is preferable to the alternative. To say that there is no way to make it a viable revenue generator for a top BCS school is also wrong. If you want an example of what one major renovation can do for the perception of a program and it's fiscal well being look at Oregon State. Reeser Stadium 6 years ago was in more or the less the same shape as Nippert. Now it is one of the finest facilities on the west coast, and perhaps most importantly they have doubled their Football Revenue stream as a result of the expansion. Nippert is tapped out as a revenue generator for the university, primarily because it was ignored for 15 years while the rest of the athletic department was tended to. The space is there to expand it and add additional revenue streams. So why exactly would abandoning it be the right strategic decision for the University?

Yeah, we're provincial the way Cub fans and Red Sox fans are provincial. There is nothing wrong with Nippert that 10.000 seats, and about 1,500 additional urinals won't cure. Knock down the old womens Phys.Ed. building, bring the upper deck around the to enclose the south end zone and that ought to get you 10,000 additional seats. Extend the existing press box from end zone to end zone, and you have your luxury boxes and club seats. 45,000 seats in an NFL town is all you need, just ask U of Minnesota, or BC, or Vandy, or Northwestern.....Nippert rocks, it is also the 5th oldest football facility in the country. Ask the PITT, or USF students how great it is to ride the school buses to and from their home games.

Make it bigger and better, or build another one right on top of it.

There's where the money is.

(Oh yeah, and get the state/Hamilton county to pay for the whole thing)

The University can not use state money to pay for athletic facilities. I assume that the same is true of county money. Anything done to Nippert would have to be payed out of the pocket of the athletic department or using private dollars.

Sorry, I was posting in jest. Great point to bring up though.

It would mainly require private donors.

We have wealthy people in Cincinnati, and they need to pony up. It's time to stop thinking international, and start Representing the C.
