This guy has just been flat out impressive. With all the hype around Gary Clark, which is deserved, I think this guy isn't getting enough credit. He's got NBA prospect written all over him. Reminds me of a poor man's Serge Ibaka. Great shot blocker with a nice touch from 15 feet. He's been our most valuable player thus far this season.

I'd say Larry Sanders as my NBA comparison right now. Ellis has a chance to make a jump offensively by the end of next year though.

Mick Cronin said before the season began if they can put 15-20 more pounds on him he will make a very good living in the NBA.

Originally posted this in the SMU thread but is more suited in this thread: Was at the game today and it was a great win...going off topic, I have one big concern: Ellis needs to mature fast or he is going to cost this team...he is quick to get snippy when he is fouled down low...I know his past doesn't help his cause, but how many times already this year have refs quickly stepped in to prevent things from escalating...today, after a harder foul heading into a TV timeout, Ellis started following an SMU player...I worry that his actions will result in a technical at some point, and with UC's, it won't come at the most advantageous time...really hope these coaches can help him continue to mature...quickly!
Go Bearcats!

He can get chippy real quick and seems to have a short fuse. At times I think we need that toughness as long as its controlled. Hopefully he continues to grow and mature. He has exceeded any expectations I had for him this year and we have a long way to go. I really enjoy watching him play. Seems like his jumper is developing too.

I dont know if I agree with this assessment. I dont think its an issue with maturity. I think it was when he was a freshmen. I think Ellis is leaps and bounds more mature than he was even when he was in JUCO. He was getting T'd up all the time in junior college. I think some guys just have a toughness in them. Whether it be because an event that happened in their life, their upbringing, or just by force of personality. Some things just arent going to change. I think for Ellis this is his toughness. He isnt going to take any shit from anybody and is going to let you know it. I think it's a good thing for this team. If it goes overboard once or twice and he gets T'd up, Im okay with that. It's just the nature of the beast with Ellis. It's who he is and no matter how much he "matures" it will be a part of his game. As long as he can keep that animal restrained it can be a real advantage for him and for this team.

I guess it comes down to your definition of maturity. Some people, myself included, think controlling your emotions and anger are signs of maturity. We all know ellis' past and what he has seen and experienced in his life is more than anyone deserves to suffer. With that said treating any aggression towards you as a means to have to retaliate to show you are tougher or won't back down isn't a redeeming quality to me. There's a difference between not backing down and seeking something out. Ellis to me still has to learn to control that. Basketball isn't ufc. And in real life actions like that don't get you ahead in life. Ellis has matured I think but he still has more maturing to do, as does any 21 year old. For him, his demons are his anger and aggression. He still needs to learn to control that.

I've met plenty of C level executives who would disagree with some of those thoughts, and obviously they've been doing something right to end up in such positions. Some of those shouting matches can get downright scary.

My dad was a prison chaplain for 16 years. He's met a lot of people who didn't get very far in life by not backing down from situations and showing how tough they are. Ive been in the work force for 20 years, I've never been in a position where pushing and shoving somebody would get me ahead, even if they pushed and shoved me first. We can go back an forth all day and it be pointless. I like ellis' toughness, I don't like the extracurricular activities after plays.

Good... But zero shot at the NBA.

He has the length and athleticism combo that you can't teach. I think he has a great shot to make the NBA. He needs to keep working on his offensive game, but then again he won't be a guy that posts up in the NBA anyway.

We gotta get our bigs more touches, Ellis included. Ellis shows nice touch from mid range and although he doesn't have an arsenal of post moves, he will score if he seals off a smaller defender near the basket. DeBerry's baby hooks are unstoppable and he has a surprising ability to put the ball on the floor in the paint and get to the rim. Clark is just crafty and finds ways to worm around/through defenders. He and Ellis might be better passers than anyone other than Caupain. By next year, we will have the best trio of big men in the Mick Cronin era. I hope we continue to play more inside-out basketball.

Also, I agree Ellis can make it in the NBA. It will take an all-conference senior year to get drafted, but if he progresses like I think he will, he will spend a few years in the league.
