FROM BILL KOCHS BLOG: Looking for a spark in the punt and kickoff return games, UC is turning to running back Isaiah Pead for help after a year in which UC ranked last in the Big East in punt returns and seventh in kickoff returns.
That came after two years in which Mardy Gilyard provided the Bearcats with the best return games in the league.
“You’re going to probably see Isaiah Pead back there a little bit more,” said UC coach Butch Jones. “It’ll be from Isaiah Pead to D.J. Woods to Ralph David Abernathy. That is an area that we have to greatly improve on and I think we have"
Pead, one of UC’s most explosive offensive players, is all for it.
“I feel back at home,” Pead said. “I used to do it in high school. Since I’ve been here, I’ve been a backup. They’ve never really wanted to put me out there.”
If the Bearcats were to open their season tomorrow, Jones said, D.J. Woods would be No. 1 on the depth chart, with Pead at 1-A."
I like it, I think Pead can have the same type of impact that Mardy did, Gilyard pretty much kept us in the '09 Pitt game just by his kick returns. Some people might not like it because he is a running back and his body is going to take more of a beating than Mardys did throughout the course of a season but IMO the positives far exceed the potential negatives.
