I don't know if you guys realize this but Armando Galaraga of the Detroit Tigers had one out to go for a perfect game. It was a bang-bang play at first base and Jim Joyce, the umpire, called the runner safe. One problem, the guy was OUT!!! Jim Joyce just cost Galaraga a perfect game on a bad call. If it is even close you give it to the pitcher in that case. Ridiculous!!!

Wow, what a call. Everyone now will blame Selig for not overturning the call because everyone hates him, but lets be honest, Selig would open up a big can of worms if he overturned that call. It goes against everything baseball stands for. I don't understand how the umpire could make that call on such a close play. In that situation you'd have to be halfway to right field for me to call you safe. I'm not going to be the one to blow a perfect game on a close call. Unbelievable. I do at least give the ump credit in apologizing and admitting he missed the call. This can't be easy on him.

Next time you watch the replay watch the runner -- he looks disgusted he was called safe.

No way can they overturn that call. First off, I'm not sold that the pitcher didn't bobble the ball. Secondly, I agree that they should use replay for this type of thing. Not balls and strikes though. Maybe a challenge system similar to NFL, cuz baseball is already slow enough, don't need instant replay slowing it down more.

I agree with every point. I thought he didn't field it cleanly either. He double-clutched it and the umpire probably saw that. Honestly in real time you can't fault a safe or an out call, but knowing the situation, even gut feeling goes out the door. I'm calling out unless it's obvious.

Yeah I agree that in a toss up, 2 outs in 9th for a perfect game you should always give that to the pitcher, but it does look like he bobbles the ball. I'm not one of those calling for the head of the umpire, and I'm not one of those who think it's the worst blown call in history.

I'm not calling for his head either, the guy admitted his mistake. Real time is too close to call. I just hope no one calls for Selig's head on this one. He gets a bad rap. Like the All-Star game a few years back, the managers used up all their pitchers and went to Selig and said we have nobody to pitch after the next inning. What's he supposed to do? He upped the rosters for more pitchers almost immediately for future years and put out the message that managers need to save pitchers.

As far as worst blown call (assuming it was a blown call), I don't know. Perfect games are about the epitome of greatness in sports. Maybe the blown call in the National Title game a few years ago that gave OSU it's title.
Short of costing a team a title, costing a pitcher a perfect game is tough to top.

It's things like this what makes baseball barely above hockey.

I think we are agreeing on everything here. I too can't stand that Selig gets all the crap for the all star game. For one, I wasn't all that upset that it ended in a tie, the game didn't mean anything, why risk injury? Also, I think he made the right call to end the game in a tie. It's not his fault that the managers tried to get everyone playing time. He made the correct call.

As for Hockey, it is no doubt a better, more exciting sport then baseball. NHL playoffs are the best playoffs in pro sports.

Baseball could have done a good thing and awarded the first ever 28 out perfect game. Bud could have said that MLB would recognize the game as the 21st perfect game but the first "28 out" perfect game. It can go in the history book and memoribilia can be sent to Cooper's town. It is a part of history now and should be acknowledged.

I don't know I'm a baseball guy. I love the strategy. I can't get into hockey too much. Honestly with any sport it's probably just a personal taste and what you grew up on. Baseball was my first love. Hockey's a faster paced sport, but I find it boring. At least there's some good physical play in it.

As for the All-Star game I think they should put a 10 inning cap on it. Like you said it's an exhibition game. Go in knowing there will only be one extra frame and no one can complain it ends in a tie.

I am with Kingsley Court. There is no better postseason in professional sports than the NHL Playoffs. There is nothing better than an OT game 7 to get the juices flowing.

Hockey should be a dying sport.

Back on topic. Lumberclown care to explain whats wrong with my post? Im guessing you have nothing.

Pitcher ended up with a new vette today, not to shabby.

Whats wrong is the fact that you shouldn't over rule something that happened. That would just open up a huge can of worms. And, the pitcher could have bobbled the ball, complete toss up.

Hockey is not a dying sport, stanley cup finals viewership has been the highest in 10 years. Hockey is back on track.

I agree with you. Game 7 OT in the playoffs is the best thing you can get in sports. Game 7 in the cup finals would be the best thing sports has ever seen.

Whats bigger- Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs OT or this past Gold Medal game in OT? Personally-I would say a game 7 OT is much bigger but understand the arguement of olympics OT being bigger (Since its only once every 4 years). Having said that- The Stanley Cup is easily the best trophey in sports and to me- id rather win that then the gold medal.

NHL playoffs are the most demanding/difficult playoffs to win in sports making the champs all more impressive. I read somewhere that one of the players in the Playoffs this year was about to play with a torn ACL.(He might have) The player practiced to see if he could go. Prolly one of those "Doc...can it get any worse? No? then ill play". Hockey players are the toughest in any sport.

Last year in the Western Conference Finals, Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings was speared in the nuts by a Chicago Blackhawk player. He had to have surgery on it and still went out and played 30 minutes 3 days later. Hockey players are tough SOBs.
