Rumor: USC WR transferring to UC

So does he come in and start right away? Would another potential starter already on the team be redshirted? We have so much depth at that position... I question whether he'd be able to learn the offense between now and the Fresno game.

Weird situation...

Has Thompkins been given clearance yet? If not we could use another player at WR even though we are deep there. He would start in the 5 wide and maybe 4 right away.

HE would be eligible to play. As to starting, that is another story....we have arguably one of the best receiving corps in the country and he was a back-up at USC. It should be interesting. More talent is all good!

I was hoping for more defense, but it is a sign of respect to our program and Coach Jones.

Thompkins has not been cleared yet. If Thompkins is not eligible to play this year this could be a good replacement.

This signing might be better news for next season than this coming season. He might get limited action this year with all our talent, even if Thompkins isn't eligible. He's coming off a season with 9 catches. But if he's good enough to get recruited by USC then he has to be worth something.

I would imagine he could quickly find his way to returning punts and kickoffs this year. He would likely be in the second rotation of receivers but depending on how well he does find himself in the starting rotation for 2011 (Woods, Thompkins and Carswell?).

The guy was a 4 star and #15 rated WR recruit in the 2007 class. He clearly has some talent but whether he would be ready to unseat our veteran WRs or even Kenbrell Thompkins remains to be seen. I agree that 2011 would be his opportunity to really shine. Thompkins, Woods, Carswell, and Dyjuan Lewis (or Jamar Howard if he RS this season) would keep our WR group at an elite level.

Competition is never a bad thing. If this rumor is true, some of the young guys better step their game up if they want to see the field next year. Competition will keep this group consistently near the best, if not the best in the country year in and year out.

Very true. Penn State didn't just become linebacker u. because they had the best coaches (although they did have very good coaches). They became linebacker u. because the best linebackers in the country wanted to go there because going there meant you were among the best at that best position. See also QB's at USC.

The fact of the matter is UC has and is continuing the foundation to build a brand where every good high school WR in the country will consider UC as a destination. This is how programs get built.

Exactly right, lets hope UC becomes WRU. That will help lure better QB talent as well.

Mar 28, 2010 - Spring WR Review
Brandon Carswell is one of the players that doesn’t get mentioned much in the discussion of the receiver position, but make no mistake about it, he is one of the more well-rounded players at the position, with the ability to do a little bit of everything.

March 22nd, 2010 - Preview: Wide Receivers
3. Is there a sleeper in this group, someone lacking in fanfare who could emerge as a critical cog?
I’m curious to see what Carswell can do if given the opportunity. He proved to be an effective blocker last season, so much so that whenever he was in the game, there was a very good chance a run was coming. (If I could figure this out, opposing coaches probably could, too. Not ideal.) He mostly played quarterback in high school, so maybe his learning curve is a little steeper than some others’. Maybe now, entering his fourth year in the program, he’s ready to become a fully developed receiver.

Here is his latest tweet, according to a buddy of mine..

Here is what he just tweeted:

After much time and thinking and heavy recruiting...I think I will be a richmond spider

Would seem very weird for him to wind up at a 1-AA in his position. With the transfer rules in place at USC and being able to transfer anywhere without sitting out you'd think he'd find a BCS program to land in. I could see why he wouldn't want to come to UC because of our hoard of quality WRs but going 1-AA just seems very odd.

It would appear that his primary concern at this point is getting playing time right away. He caught 6 balls total in his time at USC and if he wants to make a run at playing on Sundays he needs to play instantly. There is just no way that happens at UC he would play here, but he wouldn't start.

This was written today. About 4 hours ago. Looks like it is still a possibility. Also, check out Vidal Hazelton's tweet that I posted in the "From The Twitter Files" forum. Looks like there might be a couple more USC players coming on board.

Another member of the Trojans football program is threatening to use the “get out of jail free card” handed out by the NCAA that allows juniors and seniors to transfer without penalty (sitting out a year) as part of the sanctions imposed on USC.

Brandon Carswell, a junior receiver, who has played sparingly over the last two seasons, could be taking his game to Cincinnati.

According to a report by Scott Wolf of the Daily News, “USC wide receiver Brandon Carswell might transfer to Cincinnati, according to sources.”

Carswell was one of the many wideouts in competition for the starting job opposite incumbent starter, Ronald Johnson, during spring practice.

Appearing in 3 games for the Trojans in 2009, Carswell caught 5 passes for 21 yards, his longest reception being 11 yards.

If Carswell does indeed decide to make the move to Cincinnati or elsewhere, he would become the fourth USC player to leave since the NCAA speared USC with a slew of sanctions.

Linebacker Jordan Campbell was the first Trojan to jump ship, followed by defensive back Byron Moore, who as a redshirt freshman must sit out a season, and finally fullback D.J. Shoemate, who transferred to UConn with his eye on being a featured tailback.

Of the departures, Carswell's would probably be the easiest to stomach of the four.

While a starter opposite Johnson has yet to establish himself from the rest of the pack, wide receiver is the one position at which USC has a tremendous amount of depth.

Five-star wideout prospect, Kyle Prater, who enrolled early and took part in Spring Practice, will be joined by fellow five-star recruit, Robert Woods this fall.

Both receivers are great talents and will likely be leaned on heavily during their freshman seasons with the Trojans.

Also joining USC this fall will be four-star wideout, Markeith Ambles, along with three four-star tight ends in Xavier Grimble, Randall Telfer and Christian Thomas.

I'm not sure what to think now. Someone on another forum said that Jones said at a golf outing today that Carswell was coming. I can't figure out why he would tweet that he's going to Richmond, though. Interested to see how this all works out.

Also, I found this:

Rumor: Brandon Carswell Transferring to Cincinnati
Looks like it has legs. Word is Vidal Hazelton recruited him out there.

Brandon along with C.J. Gable, Travon Patterson, and Marshall Jones would have been my picks to transfer so this comes as a little surprise.

There's some rumors about Travon Patterson transferring to Colorado but not sure how strong they are at this point. Haven't heard anything about Gable but it makes sense since USC has a million RBs. Marshall Jones would be interesting. I'd LOVE to have him at UC. He was a former 5 star safety prospect and he has two years of eligibility remaining.

I thought it was odd as well until I remembered that his old QB Aaron Corp transferred to Richmond after losing the starting spot this past year.

Right now I could see him going to either Cincinnati or to Richmond to light up a bunch of FCS schools with a QB he is already familiar with. They would both have 2 years to get NFL attention.
