Seton Hall senior guard Jeremy Hazell was shot on Christmas during an attempted robbery in New York City and is resting at home, Seton Hall spokesman Matt Sweeney confirmed Sunday.
"He was shot [Saturday] night in his hometown [Harlem] after an attempted robbery," Sweeney confirmed by phone. "He was back home for the holiday. He was shot during an attempted robbery. He was shot under his right arm. He was taken to St. Luke's Roosevelt, treated and released this morning.
"He's resting at home comfortably. It's certainly not life-threatening in any way."
A source said Hazell was shot once.
Sweeney did not have any additional information on where the robbery took place.
Detective Sessa of the New York Police Dept. DCPI (Deputy Commissioner, Public Information) said by phone he couldn't provide any additional details without the address where the shooting took place. He said he couldn't provide names or information related to "non-fatal shootings" because technically the person is "witness to a crime."
Following the Pirates' 69-61 loss to Richmond Sunday, at which Hazell was not present, head coach Kevin Willard did not address the shooting.
But he said Hazell may redshirt this season because of the broken left wrist suffered last month during a game against Alabama in the Virgin Islands.
"January 10 we'll find out," Willard told reporters. "Even then we'll have to make a decision whether it's good for him to come back or not, this year...There's a pretty good chance he might not come back this year.
"The way I look at injuries. If it's good for him to come back and it makes sense for him and he can be a highly productive player and make money out of it next year then he'll come back. But if he's not going to be 100 percent and it'll hurt his draft status or making money the year after then we'll make the decision that he should red-shirt. We're going to do whatever's best for Jeremy."
Hazell, a first-team all Big East preseason pick, has been out since the team's victory over Alabama, Nov. 19, in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
He underwent surgery Dec. 2, and it was announced he would return within 4-6 weeks.
"We have no idea," a team source added about Hazell's wrist situation. "We have no idea."
The Pirates blew a 58-53 lead with 8:54 remaining and dropped their second straight after leading in the second half. They fell to Dayton on Monday.
Jeff Robinson paced the Pirates with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Jordan Theodore added 15 and Herb Pope had nine points and 12 boards.
"I want to thank everybody who came out in the bad weather," Willard, whose club fell to 1-4 against Atlantic 10 opponents, told reporters. "I apologize for the way we're playing right now.
