With summer league just a couple weeks away, I thought it'd be fun to talk some basketball. Most of us are optimistic about the coming season. The core of returning players, and a talented group of newcomers gives us all hope the Bearcats can sustain and build on what they accomplished last season.

The only question about the starting five is if Justin Jackson or someone else will start opposite Yancy Gates in the low post. Most believe you can pencil in Wright, Dixon, Kilpatrick and Gates. In that group you have experience and guys who have all produced at various times, but are yet to prove they can do it consistently and over time. Wright has been hindered by injury and Dixon was up his freshman season and down as a sophmore. He had a good '10-'11 but he was inconsistent. Kilpatrick too struggled with being consistent. This was especially true from the three point line. Lastly Yancy Gates was Yancy Gates till something came alive in him the last 10 games of the season.

Whether or not the promise for next season is fullfilled will lie heavily on these four guys shoulders. In the group you have three players entering their 4th season in the program and another entering their third. They've all fought the wars and they all understand the sacrifice it takes to win. Sacrifice is the one trait that can take you from being a good team to being a very good team. These guys, and the other returnees, get that.

Dion Dixon improved vastly last season. After showing so much promise his freshman season he took a back step as a sophmore. Because of this, and his drive to win, I think we will see a far more consistent player next season. Dion's biggest battle is with his confidence. He had six games of five or less points and two where he didn't score at all. In the last eleven games Dixon scored 15 pts. or more 5 times. He also had three games where he scored 2, 7, and 5 respectively. Learning mentally to stay focused on nights your shot is off is the key for him. He has a habit of letting his shot effect his whole game. If he can come into his senior season with a more consistent shot, and a willingness to attack when his shot isn't falling, his last season as a Bearcat could be very rewarding.

Cashmere Wright has shown us flashes of the player he can be. When he is right this team goes to a whole new level. Cash truly is the straw that stirs the drink. For the Bearcats to finish in the top 1/3 of the Big East Wright has to show up every night and make an impression on the game in some positive way. He has to realize this is his team and he needs to lead it. Wright has to do a better job of finishing around the basketball and eliminate stupid turnovers that lead to easy baskets. He also needs to assert himself more by getting into the lane and staying under control once he does. I think early in the season we will see Davis and Guyn spell Cash for long stretches during blowouts to help save the strength and stamina of his knee for the end of the season. For this team to maximize it's potential next season Cashmere Wright has to show up to play every single night

There is no player I look more forward to watching next season than Sean Kilpatrick. With his work ethic and willingness and desire to get better, we could see his game go to a whole new level. Sean never scored in double figures more than 4 games in a row in '10-'11. He also had 8 games of 3 or less points. When he is on he can be explosiove as evidenced by his 26 points against Wright State and three game stretch in BEast play where he scored 19, 15 , and 18 in consecutive games against Depaul, SJU and Louisville. Look for Sean to come in much more consistent from the field and to improve his decision making and on his 37% three point accurracy. He is putting major time in and is driven to be the best player he can be. Sean is a player that can take over a game. That's an element every good team has to have. That one guy who can score from some where when you're bleeding. Sean Kilpatrick can be that guy in Cincinnati.

Is there a bigger enigma than Yancy Gates? I won't rehash what we all already know about last season. Yancy was Yancy and then (Boom!) a light seemed to come on and a heart caught fire. In my opinion Yancy is bent on proving he is one of the permiere big men in college basketball. If Yancy can reach down and pull out an All Big East type year, this team may compete for a Big East title. Yancy averaged 15 ppg and 6.8 rebounds over his last 10 games. He scored in double figures the last 9 of those and had 3 double doubles and just missed a fourth with a 12 point 9 reb. effort against Notre Dame. If that's the Yancy the Bearcats get from game 1 to the last one, the Bearcats could dance a few rounds next March. His time playing against elite players in the try outs for the USA team in the World University Games could be invaluable to him.

There are other questions about this team, but how the season goes will likely be determined by the consistency of these four players. If as a whole they can come in every night mentally ready to play and impact the game, the Bearcats will be fighting for a top 5 finish in the Big East.

Reading that gave me the jitters. I am in full basketball mode and its not even football season yet. ha
But i think Dion Dixon is a huge key. If he can consistently drive to the basket like he showed at moments last year then that opens up another dimension to this team and to his game because they will back off of him more. Then the obvious cash has to give a great effort every night like you said having players capable of backing him up is really helpful. I think kilpatrick is going to get 15 a night enuff said. And Yancy needs to be a consistent force on the boards. Just be more aggressive and his averages will increase. With Dixons, Guyns and Cashs ability to drive to the basket Yancy will get his fair share of lay ups and put backs.

I think the fifth spot is Jackson's to lose. He's got the experience and the desire and really showed improvement down the stretch. I'm as excited about seeing his improvement as I am Kilpatrick's.

I think Yancy just needs to continue being Yancy. It's nice having a big man who can shoot, rebound and serve as an anchor for the offense. I'm also interested in seeing JJ as he gets bigger. Those long arms and his offensive potential if he loses his hesitation are probably going to make him a hell of a ball player before he leaves.
I'm also interested in seeing Gaines. I wouldn't mind having a taller Danny Fortson type kid who rebounds and slams it home.

Thanks, Bearcat Jeff for starting this thread. If the core 4 improve over the offseason as we all expect, and a couple of the newcomers (JS and ST) add depth and are solid contributers, this will be a season that all of us who suffered through the lean years will cherish. I am also excited to see how much JJ has improved, and look forward to a solid contribution from Parker. Can't wait to read reports from the summer league, and for the season to start.

My list of things that need to happen for UC to improve upon last year:

1. Cashmere Wright stays healthy:

Obviously health is always a big factor in a team's success and it can't really be controlled... hopefully Cash and the training staff is doing everything possible right now to make sure his knee can sustain an entire season.

2. Yancy Gates, 1st Round Draft Pick:

I don't think he needs to become a draft pick but Yancy has to be selected in round one in next year's draft. He needs to improve his overall game, polish it and maintain his hunger. If he does that the 'Cats will be difficult for any team in the nation to beat.

3. Freshman Contribution:

Clearly you hope all freshmen contribute at some time or another but with SK sliding into the starting role the 'Cats could benefit greatly from one of the freshmen becoming a reliable 6th man that can come into the game and provide some instant offense and energy. It will also be important that whoever backs up Cash at PG (Ge, JD or both of them) plays as mature as possible. They are freshmen and they will make mistakes, but you hope to limit them and have the good outweigh the bad. Hopefully it will help that both of them spent an extra year in prep school.

This is a good assessment if all these things go well I think UC has a great chance to be a top 15-18 team by the end of the year. We also need to get consistantly good games from multiple guards like SK and Dixon the same night. Not 100% sold on this, but it may be better for SK to come off the bench again for a while to spell Dixon because they don't really play that well together. For this to happen however either one of the freshman 2/3 (Thomas or Sanders) will need to soldify themselves at that position.

I think if that is the case, and I don't think it willl be, that you'll see Parker starting. At least initially.

Don't be shocked if you see SK continue to come off the bench. I really think Jermaine Sanders has a shot at starting at the 3. He will need an awesome summer but why not.

You know I love Sanders. Mick likes to give his vets a shot and he loves defensive experience. That's why I believe JP would start early. But I believe SK snd Dixon will both start. The only scenario I see where Killa comes off the bench is if there is just no bench scoring. Having him in the starting five gives you 3-4 legitimate scorers in your line up. Championship type teams have that. It makes it tough on a defense to take away the things you like to do and gives you options regardless of what defense is being played.

id be really surprised if any of the freshman (except for gaines, and i think thats a stretch,) startunless theres injuries, suspensions, or academic issues. The last two, which i feel should not happen at all with 3 starters in their 4th year of the program and kilpatrick as a third year player.

I think mick prefers bringing fresh off the bench when possible (obv hes gonna start the elite of the elite or when in massive need like vaughn and lance) but unless a fresh is just head and shoulders better than killpatrick, which would blow my mind, i dont think hes gonna start them. Coming off the bench for a fresh helps keep the pressure off them a bit and continues to give them something to bust their ass for in practice to be starting by their soph year.

based on where he is now, there is a 0.1% chance gaines starts. lets worry about him actually getting in the rotation.

I agree. only reason I even mentioned him as a long shot, is bc he is at the position where the only real spot that's open is. I still expect the other big that starts next to yanc to be jackson , or maaaaaybe the juco kid

If what you say is true then they would play a primarily 3 man rotaion in the post with Gates/Jackson starting and Mbodji rotating in at both positions. I personally think Kelvin will get at least 10-12 minutes a game because of the work he is putting in, his athleticism, and defensive potential. He will be asked to reb, play D, and make things tough around the basket. This is not Biggie who couldn't move or press. He is the most athletic big man on this roster, as acknowledged by both Mick and Yancy.

Guys like Gates and Gaines who can block shots if your opponent gets behind the press is a valuable thing to have. Not to mention altering shots on dribble penetration. I hear Mick is very optimistic about the potential of this team. This board, other boards, and Mick himself have stated the concerns, but there is a definitive sense of the possibilities of this team.
