Because he was a shotgun quarterback in Brian Kelly’s offense, Pike has to prove he can play behind center and make 3-, 5- and 7-step drops. Kelly’s spread – with its multiple pass options and four- and five-receiver sets – prepared Pike well for the demands of reading defenses and making quick, smart decisions.

Pike has been asked about the left forearm he broke twice. He produces a written statement from a doctor declaring him healthy. “The biggest question (they have) is how I’m going to make the transition from a shotgun to a pro-style offense,’’ Pike said.

There is also this wonder, from an NFL assistant I spoke with Monday: “What scares me more is why he didn’t start sooner at UC. It’s UC, not USC.’’ The coach wondered if there were “some leadership or work ethic issues.’’
