UC Assistant Coaches

Any word on any of these guys getting any head coaching offers?

Doesn't happen very often at UC. Can anybody recall an UC ASSISTANT Coach obtaining a head coaching job directly from the UC staff? Kennedy doesn't count as he was the head coach. Similarly Cronin doesn't either as he got the Murray State job as a Louisville assistant. Frank Martin either. Didn't somebody get the Loyola (Chi) job awhile back? Not sure that was directly from Huggins' staff here at UC though..... Anybody ever?

.

Any word if UC will hire an offensive coordinator? These kids will have to play Cronin's defense first or sit, but he needs to give the offensive reins to one of the assistants. Like in football, it gives him plausible deniability as he fires the coordinator when things go wrong.

I think Cronin has too much of a control issue to be giving up any significant part of coaching to someone else. This seems like something that will never happen IMO. I just hope the recruits get better and better...that's all we really need. I think we are trending there but I still feel like we need either more of them or even higher quality.

i don't know that this is really specific to cronin. does any coach give up control over an entire aspect of the game? that doesn't really seem to work for basketball.

We definitely need to quit recruiting kids who end up leaving the program. It's staggering the amount of kids we've brought in that either wound up leaving or being a non factor for 4 years.

I think a lot of this is due to the fact that Mick hasn't been able to land as many high caliber players as he would have liked. We had some good gets no doubt but we've had wayyyyy too many misses.

Rather than fill a hole with a Mormon or a Jamaree Strickland (LOL) why not get a kid who can shoot the basketball? Spot up shooters can be had, it's how teams like Middle Tennessee State and Stephen F Austin wind up doing damage in the NCAA's. These kids are out there to be had in almost every recruiting class, the problem is Mick isn't looking. He'd rather get another "athletic" kid some some length who undoubtedly will either not contribute or leave before his 4 years are up.

Ge'Lawn Guyn
Jamaree Strickland
Deshaun Morman
Kelvin Gaines
Biggie McClain
Darnell Wilks
Jeremiah Davis
David Nyarsuk
Jermaine Lawrence
Quadri Moore

It's crazy how many players we've had that have left or not contributed. I'd trade all of this untapped athletic potential for one player who could stand in a single spot and drain 3's.

I'm ready for some of these guys to move on. If no one is offering head coaching positions or asst positions at top programs, that should tell us something. It's getting stale.

When you are bringing in 3 star and low 4 star talent you are going to have your home runs and duds. We need to keep mixing in high 4 star and 5 star talent to cut down on the busts.

Not sure how realistic it is to start landing high end 4* and 5* recruits regularly. If we are acknowledging there are homeruns and duds with the guys we currently getting, even more reason to fill our scholarships imo. Most teams cut their rotation down to 7-8 players as the year goes on...but the good teams do this by choice. Year after year we find ourselves with a rotation of 7-8 not by choice, but based on whoever just happens to be left on scholarship. When Moore, Jenifer, DeBerry, and Johnson are half the team, it's no wonder we don't get very far. Combine that with out coin-flip style of play and you get what we've seen the last 2 years.

I agree with you on filling at least 12 of the schollies every year if not 13. There are going to be duds, red shirts and transfers and we are spreading it real thin when we have injury with only 10 active players and 2 of them are for emergency use. I don't believe it's likely to start getting those blue chip recruits every year...but if we can consistently pull in guys like Caupain, Evans, Clark, Cumberland more and more...that will be much better IMO.

Any of our Assistants going to be HC candidates this offseason? I always figured a Colonial Athletic team would come calling for Davis and a MAAC team for Savino. I know Davis is older but by all accounts he has as much energy as ever and takes great care of himself. These guys really know those areas too. I'd be really happy for either one if they got some looks.

Bit of a fine line Jake. You can fill them but with the way kids transfer now you could be tying your own hands by not having a spot or two available. Creating a roster is a tough assignment especially when your not landing a bunch of one and doners.

That post was about last year's team.
