This is from Paul Dehner Jr:

UC currently is knocking down 37.4 percent from deep, thanks to a run of 24 of 56 over the last two games.

If they could hold that percentage over the course of the season, they would rank third all-time in UC history. And that's by a hundredth of a percentage point behind the Final Four team of 1992.

Here's the Top 5

Year Total Pct
86-87 115-267 43%
91-92 208-555 37.5%
11-12 67-179 37.4%
93-94 253-693 36.5%
01-02 209-577 36.2%
99-00 165-459 35.9%

Last year, the Cats shot 33.8% from deep. Yeah, UC's taking a ton of 3-pointers right now, but when they are dropping it's easy to rationalize.

Just seems they are more relaxed to me. The offensive changes and a new sense of togetherness have been welcome changes.

I noticed this at the game on Saturday and me and my buddies were talking about it. Killa has an extremely quick release and can pretty much catch and shoot regardless of if he has someone on him or not. He is streaky but when he's on he's on. Give him an inch and he'll get off a great looking shot. Dixon and Cash have slower shots and need more time to get the ball away. It's not really a matter of good looks with these two, it's a matter of wide open looks. Dixon almost starts his shot around the side of his hip and brings the ball up off to the side of his head, it's a pretty strange motion when you look at it. If he is open he can drill shots but he isn't very good at catch and shoot or contested jump shots. It's the same with Cash. It almost seems like he likes to "hop" into his shots. He gets a pretty agressive jump step going before he gets into his shooting motion. He needs to be moving toward the hoop to execute his jumper. You could almost call every shot with these two during the game. If they had space and time they made the majority of their looks, if they were shooting with loose or tight defense you saw bricks.

I think these guys will continue to shoot better if they are getting enough time and space to get their shots off. It all starts with penetration and playing the inside out type of game that we've seen in the last two. Get the ball inside and finish at the rim but if your path is blocked kick the ball back out to an open shoot. I don't see any reason why you can't execute the same offense when Yancy gets back. This team will only be better with Yancy on the floor as long as Mick doesn't have him coming up to the top of the 3 point line to start the offense.

I see what you are saying but you are kind of stating the obvious here. 99.9% of players will shoot better with a wide open look.

Dixon gets good lift on his jumper so his unusual release isn't as much of a detriment. I think people are a little too critical of Cash IMO. His form is quite good on his jumper and he is quick enough to back defenders off of him which gives him the ability to get his shot off. I have no issues with any of the three you mentioned taking shots from anywhere as long as they are quality shots within the flow of the offense.

By the way, this offense that we are running right now is the same offense Mick ran while at Murray State. Expect it to continue this year and into the future. This will bode well for recruiting guards and forwards who can run the floor and shoot.

After 6 years of nonsense Mick finally has come to his senses. You have to play to your advantages not worry about the other teams strengths. Sure the rebounding will take a severe hit, but you have to do what the kids on the team do best.

I think part of that is just fear on his part. It's understandable.
You recruit with certain roles and strategy in mind.
Maybe he's just been micro-managing everything.

Or maybe he walked in to no players. It takes time. People forget that Mick ran this "new" offense at Murray State. Last years' team couldn't play this way because the seniors couldn't play this way. This year Mick probably should have gone to this sooner. Better late than never though.

Exactly!! The last few years they haven't exactly shot lights out and this is his Murray St. offense.

A very large part of not shooting it lights out was the offense. Players shoot better when they get better looks and when the there is better ball movement, including driving and dishing. The easiest shot from 3 is from a kickout because you are already in position to shoot. The offense did not create a lot of good looks and as a result, the shooting suffered. I still think they don't have any great shooters but average shooters become much better with better looks.
