Some chicken shit play calling today.
It's 4th and short, let's have a run play out of the shotgun!
The Defense tried damn it. Everything with this staff, is sideline to sideline. Throw it deep over the middle?! Non-sense!
QB situation is still in flux, nobody very good at the most important spot on the team. Winn is still a beast but they went away from him. This staff is too conservative. You take away that Liberty Bowl and I can't say I'm too sad if Butch leaves.

No I wouldn't. I don't think the play calling in general gave this team any chance to win. Butch should feel like an ass right now. Calling fans out then following up with a high school performance.

Complete over reaction to a loss. I suppose you think Oregon should fire Chip Kelly and Kansas State should fire Bill Synder.

We have a good coach they will allow us to play for big east championship. We can't keep getting these coaches

Butch has done a very good job recruiting and getting people to stay after they commit. If you remember, BK sort left the cupboard dry with that '09 class. Thus, we still have a young team. And for those of you saying he called out the fans and laid an egg, that was a very good defense and we had a qb starting the second game of his career. One thing I want to make clear-there is absolutely NO way he leaves and goes to UK. That job would be a step down. Purdue is also probably not gonna happen and I think Tenn. could be appealing. Not that he would be in the running for this, but the USC job could be open-that would be pretty hard to turn down if they happen to consider him.

They run all plays out of the shotgun because the QB's never takes snaps from under center. To be honest to gain a half a yard your O-line has to make a push to get you past the line of scrimmage regardless of where you start with the ball. Under center there's one spot to go and that is forward. From the shotgun you at least have a chance to see if anyone on your line made a push and attack that point. Our O-line got destroyed yesterday.

I do think our play calling is a little too conservative at times, but I think Butch knows our propensity for turning the ball over when we put the ball in the air so he calls the game to protect the ball.

And yeah I would miss Jones, I think he's a good coach. We are a stepping stone school, we will never attract a big name to come here, nor will we hold onto someone bigger and better teams reach out to. Jones fits our mold. He preaches toughness and team. He recruits well and will get the talent to win.

He kept Munchie in which cost us, he had multiple oppurtunities to score yesterday and couldn't, he often plays not to lose, rather than to win.
And Chip Kelly has actually won something. What has Jones won in his time here? A liberty bowl and if we don't blow it against UConn or USF maybe a Belk Bowl?
:/

That Liberty Bowl win was easily the best bowl win in Cincinnati history, at least since the 50's I don't know how significant those bowls were back then. Yeah he kept Munchie in probably too long. There's a reason Kay didn't beat him out in open competition and Kay didn't really look all that impressive yesterday. I think he was hoping (as we all were) that Munchie would figure it out along the way, because he's a junior and we'd have him another year. Our offensive and defensive lines got manhandled yesterday. No part of that can be blamed on play calling. Kay threw two interceptions and took some sacks he shouldn't of by holding onto the ball. That's not play calling, it's your players getting beat out one-on-one vs. their opponent. Our defense let them run the ball up the middle for 60 minutes and couldn't stop it. Had we scored they would've exploited our horrible pass defense. They didn't have to. I don't think Butch is perfect, but maybe it's time to admit our team isn't as good as we had hoped it would be.

Actually we can. Crap rolls downhill and we're in the middle. While our coaches will keep getting poached, we're going to have our pick of the best small conferences coaches. Many of those guys would do as well or better than CBJ here IMO.

I am not concerned that Butch will leave for UK. Butch turned down a better job than UK last year, Illinois.

UK has already denied they made Butch or anyone else an offer, which often means they made an offer but were turned down.

Of course UC would miss Jones. It's just stupid to think otherwise.

Could UC hire another great coach? Maybe. No guarantees there.

Sometimes I really question this fan base's understanding of where we are and what is at stake.

You might be right. Or maybe you're underestimating where we are? I think we were the top program in the BE when CBJ arrived in 2010 and we are now 0-3 in getting to the BCS with him. I actually think he's a good coach, but let's not go crazy here when the results have been average. Plenty of the best MAC/CUSA coaches would love to have these players against UC's schedule and only be expected to win 8 games a year to be considered great.

They got penetration against our O-line, we got some against theirs. When we did, it seemed like the result was usually good. For whatever reason, we didn't bring pressure all that much. That is play calling. Although, we have a D-coordinator for that. I always heard Jones was a special teams guy.
We had multiple oppurtunities saturday and squandered them.
None the less, yes, their lines were better.
Still, 4th and inches, let's go shotgun, backward back 5 yards and then run it? You couldn't sneak? You couldn't do a power formation just once? It was a stupid idea. Momentum changes if we score there. I don't think they so much stopped trying to score, as much as they shot themselves in the foot with turnovers. Ones which we generated. Our defense bent more than it broke. I don't think they were taking it easy, I think Rutgers just isn't that good.

Regardless, Jones recruited those players. If they're bad, he should bare the blunt of the criticism.
As for the Liberty bowl, I'm sorry, beating a 6-6 Vanderbilt team for a non-BCS trophy is lame. We spent previous years at the Orange and the Sugar. That's where we need to be mentally. Better to aim high than be satisfied with mediocrity.

We hired a MAC coach in Brian Kelly and replaced him with a coach from the same team. How hard was it really?
"Great" coach? How is he great? He's an average coach.
What has he accomplished? I think the fan base has more confidence than you do.

What coach are you going to get when they have no idea what league we will be in?

BK left nothing here but the W's and Bad feelings. Recruiting is better than it has ever been.

Losing Butch wouldn't be a death blow, but the risk is there that it could be a significant setback.

Fans not caring if butch leaves have no idea about reality and what shape UCs future is currently in. Not the time for change in the coaching staff.

How good is he at recruiting, if we can't get a decent quarterback or field goal kicker? I don't think you have to be that specific with a coaching hire, if you did, why go back to the same school twice for it?
That just seems like probability would bite you in the ass if you even considered it. Stability is fine, except when it looks like never winning a championship. Skip Holtz was consistent. Doesn't change the fact, that in spite of out recruiting us, they've been crap down at USF for quite some time.

So what coach is going to take on the situation we are in that gives us a better chance at winning?

Good question. I don't watch lower level teams but ideally, I'd like someone who can recruit but also someone a lot less hell bent on running. We're not in a conference, where everybody has huge linemen. We're in a conference where people use speed and smaller athletes. We need to be able to throw the ball. I don't want anymore so called dual threat QB's who can't throw. Spread option ball, really only works well when you have elite athletes. Oregon comes to mind. I'd like someone who won't completely thumb his nose at building a defense but happens to be more open minded on offense.

Here's the thing, Butch has shared a Big east title and had a great shot at another this year. Not bad in my opinion. And with what the Bearcats lost, I actually think this coaching job this year was terrific. I can see you disagree.

The fact that we could lose what we lost and still compete for a championship tells me that this staff knows what they are doing. They will continue to re-load, and step up. Might be too slow for some, but we were spoiled by BK (who is a truly gifted coach) and some amazing performances by amazing athletes.

I say now is the time to back the coach, keep him around, see where UC falls in the conference landscape and hope he wants to stay. I think the future is bright at UC with Butch Jones.

Unless we can find our way into another conference very very soon, Butch Jones is gone. Yes, we will miss him very much and if we do not do something about this conference situation football at UC is dead anyways.

My prediction assuming that nothing changes on the conference front is that Butch Jones is going to leave for the Purdue job. I would have laughed at myself then punched myself in the face for saying this 2 years ago but I think Kerry Coombs is your next coach when CBJ leaves.

I really hope I'm wrong, and I really hope we get a new home in a real conference.
