After adding a number of talented players including Munchie LeGaux in the days just prior to National Signing Day 2010, the UC football program pulled a rabbit out of its helmet when Kenbrell Thompkins officially became a Bearcat Wednesday.

Thompkins is considered by many to be the No. 1 junior college wide receiver in the country and had signed a letter of intent in December to play at Tennessee but never attended classes.

Not long after the ink dried on the legal document, Volunteer head coach Lane Kiffin left Knoxville to become the head coach at USC. The 6-3, 190 pound wideout with 4.4-forty speed reopened his recruitment.

Tennessee was reluctant to give the talented Thompkins a release but later relented.

After a nondescript high school career at Miami Northwestern High School which earned him a scholarship offer to only Morgan State, Thompkins blossomed at El Camino Community College catching 126 passes for 2,052 yards and 15 touchdowns in two seasons.

His play earned him scholarship offers from Alabama, LSU, Florida, Oregon, California, UCLA and several other BCS institutions before he ultimately decided to be come a Bearcat.

Thompkins officially visited Cincinnati, Alabama, Tennessee and UCLA during the recruiting process.

Because Thompkins signed a letter of intent with Tennessee, he could not sign another national letter to attend Cincinnati. Instead, he signed grant-in-aid papers.
Since Thompkins graduated from junior college in December, he could enroll immediately at the University of Cincinnati and participate in spring football practices. He will be eligible to play in the 2010 season for the Bearcats.

BCL has an article up now (premium) with the headline: Is Thompkins Having Second Thoughts?... Uh oh... I certainly hope he stays a Bearcat!

I didn't know he had time to reflect on his first thoughts.

Well I'm not an expert on this, but... it seems with the signing of "Grant-in-Aid" papers he's not locked into the university, as he would be with the signing of a LOI, is that correct?

I'm no expert on Grants, but I do believe that he would only be locked in w/ a LOI.

And we know how young kids, like myself, can think sometimes... I'm only questioning what could have happened for him to have second thoughts... he had offers from some of the top schools in the nation already, unless distance is the issue...

Tenn is right down from UC, so the distance from Calif is pretty equidistant.

This doesn't appear to be good for us...but his Facebook Wall stills says he is officially a Bearcat?!? I guess we keep our fingers crossed and wait to see what happens.

I think the article from Tim Adams in the Enquirer stated that he had signed grant in aid papers and wouldn't be signing a LOI as he couldn't since he had signed a LOI with Tenn. and was released from it by Tenn? And "yes" I learned something today...grant in aid papers are not binding.

Let the drama continue...this feels like a swift kick in the nuts if he doesn't come to UC, kind of like being a kid getting a big, yummy ice cream cone and then someone yanks it away from you and gives the perverbial...SIKE!

Ugh, the life of being a Bearcat fan...I hope Kenbrell sees the light and remains a Bearcat!

Cheers

ps - that drinking stuff sounds like fun...I think I will partake in that tonight!!! LOL

Nice to see things worked out... this offense is shaping up to be epic... question is, can the hogs on the line do what's necessary?... and how will transitioning to Jones' system- while still a spread, his own system none the less- effect the big boys?... If the line plays average, this will be a top 25 offense... if the line plays above average, top 10... great, top 5... I just see no way this offense doesn't light up everyone in the Big East... now hopefully the defense is ready to take the next step...

Bring on Fresno!!!

Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, one of the top junior college receivers in the country last fall who was a late signee with UC, participated in his first spring practice with the Bearcats today.

“We’re very excited about KT,” Jones said. “It’s beginning stages but I thought the mental curve, the functional intelligence of translating what he just learned in the classroom and taking it to the field, I thought he did a great job. I think he’s going to add another dimension.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Thompkins, who originally committed to Tennessee, reportedly runs a 4.4 40.He has been cleared to practice and has appealed to the NCAA for immediate eligibility that would allow him to play this fall.

He has two years of eligibility remaining.

“It’s an ongoing process right now,” Jones said. “We’re just taking that step one day at a time.”
