I'm going to put this here but I believe even though Elijah is going prep, that Cincinnati will pursue him as a 2010 recruit. Going to be interesting to see how things play out with both him and Guyn:

Point guard
Jersey City, New Jersey
St. Anthony
Ht:6'2"
Wt:170 lbs
Class:2011 (High School)

Former Jersey City St. Anthony’s guard Eli Carter is now officially back on the market. After originally signing a letter of intent with St. Bonaventure, Carter is taking an extra prep season and re-opening his recruitment. His release from the LOI is now official and Carter is allowed to be recruited once again. “These are the schools recruiting me, in no order, Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Rutgers, St. Joseph’s, Oregon State, Iowa, Iowa State, Penn State, Virginia, Charlotte [and] Creighton,” Carter told NBE’s Matt Whitfield earlier this evening by text.

Hey bearcat jeff - what's your thought on the recruiting as a whole for 2011? It seems like we continue to lose out against the bigger names of college basketball for the best players and we are starting to complete with the Iowa's and A&M's of the world instead. Is it a step down? Thanks for all the info you provide, good stuff.

I'm going to answer you but am going to open a thread to do so for discussion sake.

Former St. Bonnies commit Eli Carter added offers from Richmond, St. Joes, Charlotte, Rutgers and Cincy. Texas A&M, UVA, Oregon, Iowa inplay

A year ago at this time, Elijah Carter was being recruited by low- and mid-level Division I programs, just hoping to get a scholarship to play ball.
A year later, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Carter is one of the hottest prospects available, as evidenced by the fact that Cincinnati, Rutgers, Oregon, Texas A&M and Charlotte wanted him to attend college this fall even though he has already said he'll spend a prep year at Brewster (N.H. ) Academy.

"He plays like Kyrie Irving," one Big East assistant coach said, referring to the McDonald's All-American from Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick headed to Duke. "He's best friends with Kyrie Irving. His game is similar to his. He's not really a point guard. He's more of a scoring guard but he can play the point."

Added St. Anthony assistant coach Eric Harrield: "I've always said he was the second best guard in the state behind Kyrie Irving and I think people now are finally seeing that."

After de-committing from St. Bonaventure, Carter now holds offers from Rutgers, Cincinnati, Oregon, Oregon State, Texas A&M, Richmond, Charlotte, St. Joe's, Penn State and Creighton.

Virginia coach Tony Bennett planned to watch Carter Saturday at the Beast of the East at Albright College in Reading, Pa.

Even though some schools want Carter to enroll this season, he will spend a year under head coach Jason Smith at Brewster to mature academically and athletically.

"I knew I could go to a Big East school," Carter said. "That really wasn't my decision. My parents wanted me to take a year to mature."

Carter grew up in Paterson, N.J. but his mother, Valarie Carter, passed away when he was 12 and he moved to live with his father, Dale Sterling, in Willingboro.

He spent his first two years of high school at Life Center Academy in Burlington, N.J., but Harrield said Carter didn't "really take [basketball] seriously."

"He played [basketball] because his older stepbrother, Khalil Murphy, played," Harrield said.

Carter ultimately decided to leave Life Center because "I didn't really think I was getting better."

Two years ago, he enrolled at St. Anthony to play for legendary coach Bob Hurley and stayed with his grandmother, Sadie Sterling, in Hackensack.

He committed to St. Bonaventure last October, something of a coup for head coach Mark Schmidt.

"St. Bonaventure fans should be excited about Elijah because he will get considerably better in the future," Hurley said in November.

Carter's stock really began to rise this past season after he dropped a career-high 31 points, including five 3-pointers, in St. Anthony's win over Oak Ridge Military Academy in the PrimeTime Shootout.

"That was my turning point," he said.

In March, Carter put up 28 points and 14 rebounds when St. Anthony beat previously unbeaten Paterson Catholic, 63-49, in the North Non-Public B title game at Rutgers. PC was ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time.

"It feels good," Carter said that night. "I grew up with them playing against them when I was younger so it feels good to come out and get the win."

Off the court, Carter said playing for Hurley "pretty much changed my life."

"Coach Hurley, he taught me a lot," Carter said. "He taught me the right things to do, the wrong things to do. He changed my game tremendously. When I went to St. Anthony I wasn't as good as I am now.

"Off the court he taught us lessons about life. I was never a bad kid. I never got into trouble. [But] all kids have thoughts of doing things you shouldn't be doing."

Added Harrield: "One of the great things about him coming to St. Anthony, Coach Hurley instilled in him discipline and work ethic that I think will take him very far."

After averaging 15 points, six assists and five rebounds at St. Anthony, Carter was somehow left off the roster for the Jordan Brand Regional Game at Madison Square Garden in April. But he went out and dropped a game-high 42 points in New Jersey's 124-119 double-OT loss to Connecticut that day.

Two nights before, he poured in a career-high 55 points when his New Jersey Roadrunners beat Waterview Triple Threat 126-119 in the Donofrio Classic in Conshohocken, Pa.

In April, four St. Bonaventure players were charged with harassment and disorderly conduct in connection with an on-campus fight in which two men were stabbed.

Also in April, Dino Presley left St. Bonaventure to join Tom Herrion's staff at Marshall.

That's when Carter decided to open up his recruitment because he "didn't have a strong relationship with anyone from up there," Harrield said.

Said Carter: "I opened my recruitment back up and [I wanted to] make sure I was making the right decision with everything."

Carter then opted to spend a prep year at national powerhouse Brewster, which many feel will benefit him in the long term.

"Coach Hurley feels he needs another year of maturity, growing up, getting a little stronger, playing a little harder," the Big East assistant said. "If he puts it all together, he's really talented.

"He's got a chance to be really good."

I said at the opening of this thread that I thought UC would pursue Carter for the 2010 season. The blog below confirms the Bearcats interest in doing so.

After reclassifying to the class of 2011 and decommitting from St. Bonaventure, Eli Carter’s Stock is Taking Off (SNY.tv). The former St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) guard will attend Brewster Academy this fall and play for coach Jason Smith. Still, schools such as Cincinnati, Rutgers, Oregon, Texas A&M and UNC-Charlotte have expressed interest in Eli Carter for THIS fall, according to Adam Zagoria, but he is sticking to the plan to prep for a season.

Class of 2011 prep guard working on cutting down long list of suitors

Eli Carter has seen his recruitment come a long way in the last 12 months. After completing last summer as a 2010 prospect, Carter prepared for his senior season under (now) Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley at St. Anthony’s of Jersey City (NJ) as a little-recruited shooting guard. Eventually a strong senior season earned him a scholarship to St. Bonaventure of the Atlantic 10, but now Carter has decided to take a post-grad season and his recruitment has been re-opened.

“My list right now is Texas A&M, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Virginia, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Charlotte, Richmond, Creghton and Temple,” Carter told NBE’s Matt Whitfield by text Saturday night.

Wonder how his visit went, would be nice to get a commit. Seems to be friends with Shaquille Thomas would be nice to get both of them in a UC uniform.

Pretty sure Mick has his in home visit with Carter tomorrow and Shaq on Friday. I really liked I saw of Carter when watching his team's highlights last year. A poing guard that likes to score and can really shoot it.

Good find Bearcat18! Elijah sent a message to Shaq Thomas in which he said:

@JS_Shaq It was good bro, i like them a lot and goodluck with ya decision tmrw!

Unfortunately Shaq's twitter is protected so I am not able to see who he was talking about. I am assuming it is UC and hopefully Shaq and Elijah decide to become Bearcats! If Shaq picks UC, that has to give us an additional boost with Eli.

Carter is a scorer. He actually reminds me somewhat of Burton who we lost to Nevada, in that he can score in a variety of ways. A Shaq/Eli pick up would be nice and finish it off with Jermaine Sanders or Aaron Thomas (or both). I believe both schools had visits set up with Carter on the same day per Jerry Meyers.

Carter has a top 5 of UC, Seton Hall, Oregon State, Charlotte, and Clemson.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2010/09/15/elijah-carter-has-a-top-five/

Elijah Carter is settling into his new life at Brewster (N.H.) Academy and trimming his college list as well.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Carter, a former St. Bonaventure commit, says his top five consists of Seton Hall, Cincinnati, Oregon State, Charlotte and Clemson.

Carter had an in-home visit with Oregon State assistant Nate Pomeday on Tuesday night. He also recently had an in-home with Cincinnati head coach Mike Cronin and assistant Darren Savino and also took an unofficial to Seton Hall.

Carter said no official visits are set although Oregon State would like him to visit October 29-30.
Carter lives in Willingboro, N.J., so Seton Hall would be close to home.

As for the Seton Hall unofficial, he enjoyed it.

“They say my first year I would play right alongside Jordan Theodore and contribute as a freshman,” Carter said. “My sophomore year they would give me the ball and I would run the team and lead.”

Cincinnati is also high on Carter, who opted to prep at Brewster after finishing up at St. Anthony instead of going directly to college.

“I’m building a good relationship wiht Coach Cronin and Coach Savino,” he said. “They came in and let me know how everything was.”

The Bearcats recently got another Jersey player when Shaquille Thomas committed on SNY.tv, and Carter and Thomas have a connection through Paterson. Carter grew up there and Thomas attended Paterson Catholic.

In March, after Thomas was already long gone from Paterson Catholic, Carter put up 28 points and 14 rebounds when St. Anthony beat the Cougars, 63-49, in the North Non-Public B title game at Rutgers. PC was ranked No. 3 in the nation at the time.

“That’s my boy right there,” Carter said of Thomas. “I knew him from AAU and stuff like that.”

As for Oregon State, head coach Craig Robinson came into St. Anthony last year and plucked away forward Devon Collier, Carter’s former teammate.

Before making any decisions, Carter is adjusting to life at Brewster, where he plays on a loaded team that features JaKarr Sampson, Naadir Tharpe and Markus Kennedy.

“We’re all playing together so we’re looking real good,” he said.

“It’s a good experience because in college everybody’s gonna be good. This is just a starting point.”

I think Carter ends up in the BEast. Recruiting is fickle but I believe in the end he will play in our conference. I also think there is a solid chance he is a Bearcat.

I think he will be a Bearcat if the coaching staff wants him. I think there are a couple PG targets that might be a bit higher on the coaching staff's radar but I also think they would be happy to land Eli. They wouldn't have visited him at home if they weren't serious. I think the dominoes will start to fall in the next few weeks.

Just saw on Twitter from BrewsterHoops: "Brewster guard @EliCart3r had a school visit on Wed with Cincinnati head coach Mick Cronin, as well as assistant @DSBball24.
