Supposedly a Michigan lean. tOSU guys think it's them, it's not (at least this week).

#33 / Springfield / Trey DePriest / OLB / 6' 2" / 218# / Jr-2011 / 4.6-40 /*****Once again a rare athlete tops our poll for the 2nd year in a row @ backer. As much as I love Hicks, DePriest is the most gifted backer I have seen come out of SW Ohio since Marcus Freeman. Trey is so smoothavoiding traffic, then BAM he is throttling through ball carriers with such violate collisions you just don't see at the HS level but a few times a year. DePriest is the total package, what an athlete he is to watch on the hard wood, his presence down low in the paint stands out while being quick enough to make it look easy getting back in transition! 1st Team All GWOC Central in 2008 & 2009, GWOC All Conference , GWOC Defensive Player of the Year & 1st Team DI All-Southwest District in 2009.

When I first saw Trey DePriest he did not leap out at me. He was all over the field but too often he was making plays downfield and he was a drag down tackler. Where he is now is what has me excited about him. He is getting better at an accelerated pace. Fans started talking about DePriest when things started looking bad with Hicks. I remember thinking that this is not a kid who is going to make up for losing Hicks. I still rate Hicks the better player but the film I have seen from DePriest's junior year shows me a player that at least belongs in the conversation. I see a player who is just as good at blitzing as Hicks, and that is saying something. Some linebackers just have the timing down. I see a player who reads the game so well and he has become a really strong tackler. I give Hicks the edge now. At the rate DePriest is improving that might change

know someone is going to ask me which is best. These kids are so good that I would call them 1a, 1b and 1c. I would probably pick DePriest. Vaughters is the fastest and most explosive but I don't like his lack of reps at linebacker, particularly the fact that he has spent so little time in coverage. Thomas is such a specimen but he reminds me of Sergio Kindle and Chris Martin, the top twenty national recruit from this year, both tall high school linebackers. Kindle is headed to the NFL as a defensive end and Martin is no longer listed by anyone as an LB. I would take Thomas and Vaughters as athletes and as football players but I would take DePriest as a linebacker

Was surprised to receive an offer in the mail from LSU on Mon. He said distance wouldn't be an issue if it was the right fit for him.

Interesting..

Impressions from the ND 3/20 Junior Day.

Quote:
Trey was very impressed with his visit, but the impression is that the Irish may be 4th in a field of 4 contenders here

Trey DePriest is the clear number one. When you have a coach like Nick Saban coming all this way to over an Ohio linebacker this early, that says it all. What I like most about him is he is getting better all the time. I was not covinced about DePriest early on. I always thought he was nice but I needed to see more. His junior tape gave me just that. It gave me more than more. It gave me all I needed. I can only put a handful of linebackers in my time in the same conversation with DePriest. I would put Jordan Hicks and Andy Katzenmoyer at the t ..

The offers keep piling up for nationally recruited linebacker Trey DePriest (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield).

Not that it really matters anymore.

Springfield coach John Cupps told CrimsonConfidential.com Friday morning that LSU, Arizona, Nebraska and Wisconsin are some of the bigger names that have recently offered, pushing the total number of offers to well over 22.

"I think it's too late for all of those -- except maybe LSU," Cupps said. "Trey hasn't come out and named a favorite, but I think his two leaders right now are Alabama and Ohio State."

Why the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes?

"Obviously, Ohio State is in the picture because we live in Ohio, and it's state law to be an Ohio State fan if you live in Ohio," Cupps said, tongue-in-cheek. "No, really, Ohio State has done a good job recruiting him, and it's just an hour-and-a-half away."

Of course, Alabama is much farther away. But, as Cupps pointed out, Sal Sunseri, the assistant coach recruiting DePriest to Alabama, is the Tide's trump card.

"He's doing a great job with Trey," Cupps said. "I wouldn't say he's in constant contact with Trey, but he keeps in touch with him and us coaches on a regular basis."

Cupps said there's a strong comfort level DePriest has with Sunseri. The fact that Sunseri as well as head coach Nick Saban have NFL coaching experience isn't lost on DePriest either.

"To be honest, that's something else that adds to Alabama," Cupps said. "I mean you've got a guy in Sal Sunseri who coached Julius Peppers for like seven years. And then there's Coach Saban, who's been in the NFL, too."

It's helped Alabama too that DePriest had such a good experience at Alabama's Junior Day a couple of months ago. As it turned out, it was more of Junior Weekend for DePriest and his coach.

"We came down on a Friday morning and didn't leave until Sunday night," Cupps said. "So it was more than just a one-day visit."

Oh, and then there's the other Sunseri. Sal's son, Vinnie, also is a standout recruit, and, as luck would have it, Vinnie and DePriest met and became friends at a recent Under Armour combine in Orlando, Fla.

Put it all together, and it's easy to see why DePriest is so high on the Tide.

"Trey likes Alabama," Cupps said. "He really does. I look for Trey and his mother to come down sometime this summer for a visit."

Cupps said DePriest plans to commit soon after football season ends in the fall, but Cupps is encouraging him to try and do it before the season, partly as a safeguard in case DePriest gets injured during the season.

Wasn't he considered a Michigan lean at one point? Are they no longer in the picture? Sounds like another top Ohio LB headed south to me though.

Early this year, there were five..Bama, OSU, Virginia Tech, OU and UNC.

I think Bama, OSU, and Michigan are pretty much in that order. Don't see ND, UNC being much of a player anymore. I would not count out LSU though, as they will on occasion snatch guys close to NSD.
