At camp in Columbus, Hardy won DB MVP with a solid performance.

Still waiting on an OSU offer. Right now, Cincy, WV, and ND look good, but an OSU offer might change things.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Nike Football Training Camp was held on Saturday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the Ohio State University campus. The camp drew about 300 participants, including some of the top prospects in the Midwest.

Defensive backs shine
Arguably the top two safety prospects in the Midwest worked out at Ohio State. Ron Tanner (Columbus, Ohio/Eastmoor) and Eilar Hardy (Pickerington, Ohio/Central) showed why they are ranked so highly. Tanner looked a shade faster and seemed to have slightly better coverage skills than Hardy. On the other hand, Hardy is a bit taller and seems to have slightly better range. Both are instinctive and constantly around the ball.

While watching his son work out, Hardy's father, Bill, said Eilar has at this point narrowed his impressive list of scholarship offers down to Michigan State, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Arizona. Hardy has visited the first four and plans to visit Arizona next month. He also plans to visit the other four at least once more each before selecting a college.

Reports suggest Eilar Hardy is favoring Notre Dame, Michigan State, Cincy, UK and Arizona.

From Scout (pay article):

Ohio safety Eilar Hardy says he has 18 scholarship offers and has already narrowed down his list to six. “It can still change, but these are the main six right now,” Hardy said. “They’re all even though.” Hardy favors Michigan State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Kentucky and Arizona. He’s already visited all of them except Arizona. “They’re (Arizona) recruiting me real hard..."

I know it's going to be nearly impossible to land this kid but he might be the one recruit that I'd most like to see us get.

He has a solid relationship with both UC and ND coaching staffs. ND is looking at him as a CB.
OSU has yet to offer.

Ohio DB Eilar Hardy a big fan of MSU, but there are other contenders

Defensive back recruiting is a major point of emphasis for Michigan State this year, and the Spartans didn't have to go far to find one of the top targets on their board. Pickerington (Ohio) Central defensive back Eilar Hardy is ranked the 16th-best safety prospect in the country according to Scout.com. But the 6-foot, 175-pounder could be No. 1 in the eyes of the Green and White.

"Hardy is a major priority for Michigan State in the Class of 2011," said SpartanDigest.com publisher Dave Berk. "The Spartans have put a lot of time into recruiting him and have ties with the family. Mark Dantonio coached Eilar's brother (Terrance Brown) when he was an assistant at MSU."

In addition, current Spartan Patrick White is a former teammate of Hardy's and is a major reason Michigan State is high on his list.

Berk added: "Hardy has the skill level to play early at Michigan State."

Known for his aggressiveness, Hardy is an extremely physical presence in the secondary and possesses a high football IQ. However, some scouts began maligning the four-star prospect's reported 4.5 speed and coverage ability after a less than optimal performance during a winter 7-on-7 camp in Ann Arbor. Many of those critics were silenced, though, after his strong showing in Columbus at the Ohio State Nike camp just three weeks ago.

"I did have something to prove to everybody," Hardy said of the Nike camp. "Some people would say I did not have the speed to compete with the big-time players and I did not have the size to compete with the big-time players. I went out there and I proved that I do have the speed to play with the top recruits, and I've got the size to play with the big-time recruits also."

Position prediction
Hardy predicts that he'll play safety in college, be he can also play cornerback.

"It doesn't really matter," he said. "I'll say I'm better at safety because that's where I've been playing most of my life. But I've got the size and speed to play corner at the next level."

To date, nearly 20 programs have proven that they have little doubt about Hardy's talents by extending scholarship offers. More could be on the way after his impressive showing in Columbus, but they had better come soon. A handful of his suitors already have separated themselves from the pack.

"Notre Dame, Kentucky, Arizona, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Michigan State -- that's probably my top six right now," said Hardy. "But that is not finalized. There are still some schools out there that could move in if they come in and offer this summer or this fall."

Michigan State's place on Hardy's list of favorites is virtually guaranteed thanks to the familiarity he has established with the program over the past few years.

"Michigan State -- they're one of my top schools, for sure," he said. "I just love it up there. It just seems like that is where I should be at. Michigan State is a lovely place. I love the program. I love Coach Dantonio. I love the campus atmosphere. I love the stadium. I love the whole football atmosphere. Michigan State is a great place."

MSU assistant coach Mike Tressel has been recruiting Hardy since he was a sophomore, "so I've been able to build a good relationship with him," Hardy told SpartanDigest.com.

"(Defensive backs) coach (Harlon) Barnett played in college and in the (NFL) and knows what he's doing. Patrick tells me how fair he is as a coach and that he won't tell you anything wrong."

Early advantage
While Hardy has yet to name a definitive leader, it's clear that his multiple visits to East Lansing gives the Spartans an early advantage over some of the other contenders. At same time, a few of them have made lasting visit impressions of their own.

"Actually, West Virginia and Cincinnati's (impressed like Michigan State did)," said Hardy. "One thing about all those three schools -- Cincinnati, West Virginia and Michigan State -- I plan on majoring in criminal justice and all three of those schools have great criminal justice programs."

The next stage of Hardy's weeding out process calls for unofficial visits to his top six over the summer. After those trips he plans to determine whether official visits in the fall are necessary.

"I'm going to see," he said. "If the time is right for me and I feel (a particular school) is where I want to be in the summer, then I'm going to (commit) in the summer. But as of right now, I'm not too sure when I'll be ready to make my decision."

When all is said and done, the program that earns Hardy's pledge will be the one that lives up not only to his stringent tests, but also to those of the people charged with helping him through the process.

"I'm going to sit down with my coaches and my parents and talk to them about it," said Hardy. "Probably the main thing is my family (and what they think). Academics are real big with them. I know all those schools have great academics and they have great criminal justice (programs). Football is important, but academics are real big in my decision about where I want to go to school at."

We have a real good shot at this kid. Hopefully BJ can close the deal. He would be a great addition to the UC Bearcat family.
