So as far as bigs go, we have:

Justin
Cheik
Rubles
Nyarsuk
Gaines

Getting a little crowded and I like that we'll have a competition. It's likely that 3 guys will get meaningful playing time with another at 5-10 minutes a game.

Something tells me, Gaines will be sitting again. Admittedly, it seems to be pretty wide open and everyone should have a chance.

From what I have heard Gaines is not really progressing. He plays and practices hard and has a good attitude but if he gives us more than 5 minutes a game we are in trouble. Mick stated in an interview done last week on BCL ( free article) that he wonders every day if Gaines can help this team at all next year but sees the light starting to go off from him. I also remember Mick saying on his radio show last year that Gaines is flat out not ready to play and they knew this would be the case when they recrutied him that it may take till deep in year 3 or year 4 for him to be a major factor for the program. Getting this Nyarsuk guy is great I think. Low risk high reward.

Cheikh has really improved according to observers and players. They need another guy that can give them strong minutes at the 5. I still haven't seen an official announcement but if this holds the reasoning behind it is sound. They obviously feel the move will be an upgrade or givet hem another body out to eat minutes in the post.

dont expect to see gaines play any more this year than he did last year.

Saw on a WVU board what people agreed was a good description on David. They said he is similiar to Dieng from UL in that if he isn't blocking shots he is changing them. Mick has made a concerted effort to get a shot blocker/changer for the back end of the press. They say he will get his share of rebounds and some put backs. They wouldn't have minded seeing him verbal to WVU again. Offensively you take what you get out of him.

I like the move, with such a big question mark in the frontcourt another body will be nice. This really isn't adding another big, we lost Ellis, so this replaces a big. He will only take up two years scholarship if he doesn't pan out and this first year would've been wasted anyway. From the little bit of video I saw he has good instincts. What I like the most is he kept the ball high on shots and on putbacks. He moves very well for a seven-footer. Can't wait to see this team suit up this year.

Take it for what it is worth, he has pics of UC financial paper work on fb. He said this is his new school.

I don't know how excited to get. On paper, 7'-1" athletic guys don't come around often. But is he more Gaines than Obekpa/Gates?

I guess we'll have to keep an open mind.

I still think this team will be guard/small forward oriented, and the low post guy will be more of a defender/rebounder/stickback artist. And if that's the case, this guy may fit the bill.

However, need to remember that the Grant-In-Aid Statement is not an LOI and does not bind the student-athlete until he enrolls in school. I assume he also has to go through NCAA clearinghouse. So still not a done deal as far as I'm concerened.

I like it because not so much because I think he'll jump in and dominate..but that it is one more athletic big (and a 7-1 guy at that). No one call tell how he'll transition to Big East play but he looked athletic in the video.

At the least, I like that there's competition between him, Cheik, Rubles and maybe even Gaines. You have to think one will emerge to be serviceable or we can get a productivity by committee approach.

I'm certainly not expecting a double-double out of whoever winds up playing the 5 but I think this improves our chances to have a solid defender, rebounder, shot blocker on the court.

Mbodji is your starter. Mick said the light has been coming on for Gaines the past few days so he has hope Gaines will help this season. He works hard, has a great attitude and you hope guys like that find some level of success. My guess is the new summer rules have benefitted him as much as anybody. However, you have to have more than a hope, you need a plan. This may not have been a perfect one but they know he gives them size and can move. At best you found a shotblocker/rebounder that contributes this season. If Mick didn't feel he adds something he wouldn't be coming here. You will see 4 guards with Thomas, Parker, Cash, Killa and Mbodji as your starters or Cash, Killa, Park (or Thomas), JJ and Mbodji depending on who they are playing. thomas is 6'7" and athletic. Park plays big. Mbodji has made big strides by all accounts and is beating other bigs up the floor by 4-5 steps. We know what we're likely going to get from Cash and SK. Imo, JJ needs to step up and T-Rub and Sanders need to contribute along with Davis or Guyn. This is going to be a deep team that will come at people in waves and with multiple line up variations.

Agree! Mbodji look good this summer! He is thinner and in shape! I love to see a 7'1 shot blocker in back of the press! It will be fun this year!

Another thing I like about this pick up is getting a big in the 2013 is a question mark at this point and getting one that would produce as a freshman is a bigger question mark. Mbodj will be gone next year so this is at least another guy with experience aboard for that season and hopefully any big we sign for 2013 can develop a year if need be.
