Darryl Hicks has been a name on the state radar since his stellar AAU showing last summer.

But on Wednesday, the freshman at Shelby County High School had his coming out party for all of the state to see in Rupp Arena.

Hicks hit 6 of 10 three-point field goals and scored 30 points as Shelby County dropped a 90-80 decision to Ballard in the opening round of the PNC Boys' Sweet 16.

"I don't want them on the schedule for the next few years," Ballard coach Chris Renner said. "He showed what he is going to be like the next three years."

The 6-foot-4 Hicks finished 10 of 20 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line with six rebounds.

Hicks said it was a "great feeling" having such a great game in his first trip to Rupp Arena.

"Kentucky is recruiting me, so it was nice to get 30 on their home floor," he said.

Hicks said his only offers is still from Indiana and he's getting looks from UK, Cincinnati, Louisville and Ohio State.

"I've grown up a lot this year," Hicks said.

Hicks has been on campus for at least one visit. Mick has been in contact with him on numerous occasions. Hicks appears to be a surefire top 25 recruit. I wouldn't be suprised if he is a top 10-15 recruit. Very, very good player.

Hicks, considered one of the top players nationally in the Class of 2013 after a sensational spring and summer on the AAU circuit, averaged eight points and five rebounds on the varsity level for the Rockets last season.

Darryl Hicks, who starred as a freshman at Shelby County High School last season, has added a new offer to his recruiting list.

The 6-foot-4 Hicks, whose first offer came from Indiana University, said he picked up a scholarship offer from Arizona and coach Sean Miller last week.

"It's nice knowing I have two offers," said Hicks, who is playing this weekend with The Ville in the adidas May Classic. "Everybody always ask how it feels, I try and just play basketball and not pay too much attention to it right now."

Hicks, who helped Shelby County to the Sweet 16 this past season, said he’s working on "a lot of things" to try and get better but noted he does have a top three list of schools.

"Indiana, Kentucky and Cincinnati," he said. "Those are the three schools I like a lot right now.

"Kentucky and Indiana I like the two coaches there and Cincinnati was the first school that let me visit and they have been so nice the whole time. I like them."

Hicks said he wasn't close to making a decision.

When watching Hicks, it's important to remember that the 6-foot-4 shooting guard is only a freshman and still has lots of developing to do. As it is, he's already established himself as a legit high major prospect. He handles the ball well, has some burst off the dribble and is wired to score off the bounce between the rim and 18 feet. He will knock down some jumpers, but would benefit from adjusting his stroke -- release is way out in front -- on jump shots just a little bit.

This past week Sports Xpress had an opportunity to catch up with Shelby County’s Darryl Hicks who is a 6’4” rising guard out of Kentucky for the class of 2013. The soon to be sophomore told us that the top schools currently recruiting him are Kentucky, Cincinnati, Indiana, Arizona, Ohio State, and Louisville with Kentucky, Cincinnati, and Indiana leading the way for his services. Among the schools mentioned, Indiana and Arizona have offered Hicks.

The sophomore to be said that he has spoken with Kentucky’s Orlando Antigua and Scott Padgett on several occasions and has a strong relationship with the Wildcat assistants. He added that he had built a strong relationship with both the staff at Cincinnati and Indiana as well, just going to show based on his top three who is recruiting Kentucky’s top prospect the hardest.

When asked if he had a time table for a decision Hicks responded with a respectful, “No Sir.” Hicks told Sports Xpress that when that time does come for him to make a decision that he will factor in location when deciding which school he will play for. We asked Hicks how he fits in with the schools he listed and he stated, “I fit in pretty well, I like their style of play.” Hicks, having played on the AAU circuit for a few years now, has created friendships with other local players, but he told us that he has yet to think about if there is anybody he would like to play with at the next level, expectedly so being only a sophomore in High School.

While on the topic of AAU, last weekend Hicks and his AAU Squad, The Ville 16 year olds, participated in the KBA AAU State Tournament. After assisting his team in reaching the finals by scoring 10 points in an early tournament win and adding 11 points in a 82-51 win over the Hoptown Hoyas, Hicks 16 year old The Ville squad was upset by Next Level 58-50 despite his 16 point performance. Darryl Hicks will continue to tour the AAU Circuit this summer and then get ready to lead his Shelby County squad into the High School season where they look to improve on their first round exit in this past seasons KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Boys Basketball Tournament.

Collins High star Darryl Hicks had a nice first showing with his new AAU team -the Derek Smith All-Stars 16s squad. Hicks was solid with the team.

Collins star Darryl Hicks is playing with the Derek Smith All-Star 16s team and they split a pair of games. After a tough 69-67 loss to the Florida Rams, the Derek Smith team blasted the Shining Stars Black team 70-48. Hicks was solid in the first game.

Darryl Hicks, the top-ranked basketball player statewide in the Class of 2013, has enrolled at Trinity High School.

The 6-foot-4 Hicks, who was a standout as a freshman at Shelby County High School, opted to attend Trinity instead of Martha Layne Collins, a new school in Shelby County that he would have had to attend this fall.

"It's a better environment for me academically," Hicks said. "I liked it a lot when I went there and they have such a unique campus. There are so many things you can do there.

"I just felt like it was a better opportunity for me."

Hicks attended his first day of class on Friday.

Hicks, considered a top-100 player nationally in the '13 class, will sit out this year under Kentucky High School Athletic Association transfer rules. He won't be allowed to practice with the Trinity team until next spring.

"We're not moving, so he is going to sit out for a year," Hicks' father, Darryl Sr., said. "But after going and seeing what Trinity had to offer, I'm excited. I think it's the right fit for him."

As a freshman at Shelby County, Hicks averaged 13.5 points a game and helped the Rockets to the Eighth Region title. He scored 30 points in a loss to Ballard in the opening-round of the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Hicks already has scholarship offers from Indiana, Cincinnati and Arizona has gotten looks from Ohio State, Kentucky, Louisville and Missouri among several other schools.

"It's going to be tough sitting out," the player said. "But I'm excited to work on my game and lift weights a lot more. My family left the decision up to me and I think it was the right decision for me as a student and a player."

I was really looking forward to seeing Darryl play in Bloomington Friday. This kid has a ton of talent but he didn't look too good Friday night. I expect to see him get better and better as the games go by and he knocks off some competitive rust from sitting last season out.

Hard to look good when you aren't at the event... lol

Darryl Hicks sat out his sophomore season after transferring from Shelby County High School to Trinity High School.

But he’s back in the court this spring and making up for lost ground.

The 6-foot-4 Hicks showed he’s still an elite player statewide by helping The Ville to the 16s Kentucky State AAU title on Sunday.

Hicks had double figures in every game for The Ville and led the team in scoring in four of the seven games. He’s so much stronger and has matured in his year off.

While there are no MVPs officially at AAU events, Hicks would be my pick after being the guy his team counted on several times.

A close second off The Ville team is Madison Central’s Dominique Hawkins, who proved to me the past two weeks that he’s a lot better than most give him credit for. He has a chance to become one of the state’s elite players.

And I can’t leave out Derek Willis of the BA Hoyas. It was a second consecutive big-time week for Willis, who ended the week with a toss loss to Hicks and The Ville.

Darryl Hicks, SG, Tennessee Travelers- Over Sunday and Monday, the 6-foot-3 shooting guard performed as well as just about anybody in the building. A well-built off-guard with some bounce, Hicks ended his weekend by going for 21 points (17 in the second half) in an overtime win over Louisiana Select. He can make jumpers, has a nose for offensive rebounds and is tough on both ends of the floor. His Monday performance followed up a huge Sunday that saw him score 51 points on a sizzling 19-of-25 (9-of-11 three-pointers) shooting during a pair of Travelers wins.
