Cincinnati has offered Marial Shayok, a 2014 guard from Blair (NJ). Villanova, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Providence, BC & Georgia have offered.

ESPN has him as a top 60 prospect.

With Gonzaga seemingly searching high and low for a talented wing player to add to the 2013 and 2014 classes, it’s been an eerily long time since the Bulldogs have been linked to a Canadian prospect. With that being said, I introduce to you Marial Shayok, a 6’6 guard/forward out of Ottawa, Canada, who currently plays at Blair Academy in New Jersey. The first thing to come to many people’s minds, when thinking of Canadian wing players, might be names like; PMAC, Kong, and Arop. With this pattern of talented and extremely hyped wing prospects crossing the border to play in Spokane, and ultimately not leaving the impression most fans hoped for, skepticism and hesitance may run high. However Shayok passes all the requisite eye and substance tests.

At 6’6 with great length, Marial runs the court like a deer, and has athleticism that allows him to finish above the rim. He has a great handle that allows him to break his defender down off the dribble, and possesses a smooth shooting stroke.

This summer at the FIBA U17 world championships, he helped lead Canada to a 5th place finish, averaging an impressive 12 points and 6 rebounds on a balanced Canadian team. Shayok continued to improve his stock over the summer, playing on the EYBL circuit and has caught the attention of a couple big names schools. From an interview by NBEbasketball.com:

“I am hearing from Illinois, Ohio State, Boston College [and] Purdue the most…Kentucky had contacted me a couple weeks ago and since I’ve been a big fan of that school for a while, I’d say they would be the favorites,” he said. “But, I am really considering every school.”

As of right now, Shayok appears to be flying under the radar of recruiting analysts (although NBEbasketball.com has him ranked 33rd in the 2014 class), but since he recently transferred to a prep school in the states you can expect that to change quickly. Gonzaga has not been mentioned a school that is recruiting him so far, but with a great tradition of Canadians playing in Spokane, one could easily see a mutual interest.

EDIT: Shayok comes in at #4 on NorthPoleHoops.com's 2014 top Canadian players list, in front of Rivals top 150 players Kevin Zabo, Malcolm Duvivier, and Raynold Kasongo.

Unfortunately about every kid loves UK. But unless you are a 5* recruit you don't have much of a chance there....They have 5 McDAA's coming in next year. Absolutely ridiculous and I would have to assume that Calipari expects many on the current roster to move on.

Marial Shayok Says Few Schools Working Hardest

Marial Shayok is one of the most athletic wings in the Class of 2014, and he says a few schools are currently working the hardest for his services.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Canadian who plays for Blair (N.J.) Academy listed West Virginia, Providence, Boston College, St. Louis, VCU and Cincinnati in that group.

“Those schools are coming at me the hardest right now,” he told SNY.tv Wednesday.

Minnesota, Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall and Kansas State are also in the mix.

Shayok said he hasn’t decided on any visits and won’t until August.

Before then, he will play with the CIA Bounce AAU team and also hopes to make the Canadian U19 team for this summer’s FIBA U19 World Championship for Men, which runs June 27-July 7 in Prague.

Training for the U19 team begins Sunday in Toronto, and is expected to include Kansas commit Andrew Wiggins and Syracuse-bound Tyler Ennis.

As for Shayok, Blair coach Joe Mantegna says he has “tons of upside as his jumper improves.”

“He can be a top-flight competitor with his elite mental makeup,” he said.

CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre added: “He’s an outstanding scorer. He’s a long , athletic, hard-worker with a great body and can score in a variety of ways.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After somewhat of a slow start at the Nike Global Challenge, Marial Shayok heated up toward the end.

In the fifth-place game on Saturday, the Canadian wing went for 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals in Canada’s 104-79 rout of Pan-Africa.

Before that, he went for 15 points and 11 rebounds in an 88-72 win over France.

In two games prior to that against American opponents, he managed just 9 points and 8 rebounds combined.

The 6-foot-6 Shayok ended up making the International All-Tournament team for his late push.

As far as recruiting, Shayok said the schools recruiting him “the hardest right now [are] Marquette, Cincinnati and Boston College and that’s about it.”
Marquette coach Buzz Williams was in the stands this weekend.

“Yeah, yeah it makes me feel real good,” Shayok said, adding of Marquette. “Also playing wise. The transition, the way they play their offense real fast I feel like it fits my game.”

As for BC, Shayok doesn’t know much about them other than that fellow Canadian “Olivier [Hanlan] goes there and he’s done well there.”

On Cincinnati, “They just play really aggressive and I like that.”

Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard and associate head coach Shaheen Holloway were also watching him.

“I don’t really konw much about them but theyr’e recruiting me also,” he said.

The rising senior at Blair (N.J.) Academy said he’s planning “a couple East Coast visits” with his dad before school starts and wants to visit Seton Hall, Rutgers and Villanova.

“A fast school, transition, a place where the coach is going to stay there my whole college career,” he said of what he wants. “Just a place where I can get better.”

The question with him is what are you going to get defensively? With a 7 foot plus wing span he has all the tools to be good defensively if he applies himself to it. He is a bona fide wing scorer though and certainly fits the physical profile Mick likes. Cincinnati is in good shape with him but don't discount Marquette in his recruitment. I've heard his Father would like him to stay on the east coast.

I'm rite on again I like this kid

I will go out on a limb and say that this will be Micks best all-around class in the past few years. While we might not land a 5 star, 2 four stars and a high 3 star to go with the JUCO is within reach. This past years class was excellent and I think this class has the potential to be even better. To all those who were worried a month ago, things look much clearer now and I think we have a much better idea of what this class will look like. Nothing is set in stone and it is recruiting, a lot can change, but we are headed in the right direction.
