Ranked just inside of the top 50 of the class of 2014, Philadelphia (Pa.) Neumann-Goretti's Newton has a great understanding of his game. The 6-foot-2 combo guard is wiry, strong, deceptively quick and one of the best off-the-drive scorers in his class.

Ja'Quan Newton is strong and deceptively quick.

On Saturday, Newton was at his best using his ability to change speeds and get to the rim and his crafty midrange scoring tools to do damage during a 17-point, four-assist, six-rebound effort. His jumper wasn't falling as much as he would have liked, but he looked much more relaxed and shot with a more crisp stroke than he has at times in the past.

"I've been playing pretty good, and I'm feeling more comfortable with my jumper," Newton told Rivals.com. "I've been in the gym working on my jumper and have put in time."

So far, Newton is being pursued by several high majors and he claims offers from Cincinnati, Arizona, Temple, Villanova, Rutgers, Miami, Pittsburgh, Xavier and La Salle, among others.

Newton said he and his family have talked about taking official visits this spring but they need to narrow the list.

"I would like to maybe take a couple of visits this spring," Newton said. "Me and my family need to kind of sit down and sort things out first."

Newton told VUSports.com that he currently holds scholarship offers from Rutgers, Arizona, Pitt, Georgetown, Miami, SMU, Xavier, Temple, and Cincinnati, in addition to Villanova.

Few people would have predicted four-star point guard Ja'quan Newton, from Philadelphia (Pa.) Neuman-Goretti, to be the brightest star in his Team Final's matchup with the Oakland Soldiers. But after the game, there wouldn't be much of an argument that it was Newton's show.

The No. 60 prospect in the 2014 Rivals150 had a huge scoring game for Team Final, knocking down several long jumpers with a smooth shooting stroke on his way to a game-high 23 points, showing great competitive resolve in the overtime matchup.

Very crafty with his dribble and showing a nice burst of speed in his first step, Newton is a guard who can score on all three levels, and shows nice ability to shift directions around the rim to avoid shot-blockers. Showing that East Coast swagger and toughness to college coaches, Newton clearly improved his recruiting stock on Saturday morning, as the Team Final vs. Oakland Soldiers matchup was among the best-attended games for coaches on the day.

Newton told Rivals that Cincinnati, Xavier, Villanova, Missouri, Miami, Temple, Georgetown and LaSalle are recruiting him, and he plans on cutting his list down after the AAU season, but likely won't make a decision until a year from now.

Ja'Quan Newton is setting the table at will for people. If you need someone to run your offense, this is your guy. Maestro!

Dominated the NBA Top 100 Camp championship game with 31 points and 7 assists. Also made the camp all-star team. Really intrigued by this kid and we have always been one of the first schools he mentions.

Ive watched 3 interviews from him from this year and he doesn't mention Cincinnati on his list of schools in any of them and ESPN doesn't even have us on his list.

Ja'Quan Newton, PG, Philadelphia (Pa.) Neumann-Goretti: Rivals.com's choice for camp MVP, Newton was a stallion when it mattered the most. In camp that lacked point guards capable of consistently creating off the dribble without the benefit of a ball screen, Newton was able to do so regularly. There is an "it" factor about him, and he demonstrated leadership qualities that we didn't know he had.

No mention of Cincinnati....

JaQuan Newton shows his playmaking prowess

JaQuan Newton has always been one of the toughest players to keep out of the lane from the class of 2014, capable of getting by his defender and finishing at the rim on a consistent basis.

He did that again last weekend at the NBPA Top 100 camp, averaging 13.0 points and 3.6 assists to prove himself as one of the better playmakers around.

Minnesota, USC, Seton Hall, Miami, Villanova and Temple are all in steady contact, with La Salle, Xavier and Georgetown also in the mix.

The only school to which he has taken an unofficial visit is Villanova, a short trip from Neumann-Goretti (Pa.).

"I like Villanova a lot," Newton said. "I like the way they play, I like the coaching staff, and I also like their facilities."

Don't expect a decision soon, though.

“I don't have any favorites or anything like that,” Newton said. “I'm just going to wait until I come around and it's time to choose, and then choose my school.”

Yeah I've never seen him express interest ESPN doesn't even have us listed for him with offers or interests I've seen numerous interviews he never mentions us don't know where Rivals got this information that he is interested in us at all...

It will be a point and a wing and 2 bigs. Whoever it is.

I will guess 3 guys with the info that I have found here and on other sites-1)Pope, 2)Moore, and 3) Buford, and 4) ?. This is just my June prediction, a lot can change and I don't have any special sources.....

Id be more than satisfied if the cats could land those 3...

Wouldn't be surprised if it was Mitchell and Bentil instead of Pope and Moore, but I think Moore will eventually be reeled in because we have been on him a long time and Seton Hall isn't much to write home about and Pope seems like he is gaining interest in us. Buford is gaining interest, but I think that Mick will stay on him and that he will be the big get of this class. I would look for the 4th guy to be an under-the-radar guy, considering that Mick usually likes to get 1 or 2 of those every year.....

I will agree that Pope is starting to like uc a little more and also agree about Moore so I'm starting to lean a little something like this:

Pope
Shayok/Robinson
Buford
Moore

Shayok would be a very tough get, he didnt even mention UC when they asked him what schools he liked. Robinson is definitely a possibility, he seems interested in us. This guy Waterman sounds interesting, he could be the under-the-radar guy. Mick is targeting a lot of recruits and once they start whittling their lists down, it will probably be much easier to see how this class will shake out.......

Carrington fits the model of a prototypical UC recruit under Cronin. NYC kid that is a little underrated and fills a position of need with SK leaving. Has listed UC from the beginning so that would be a good guess for that position. I think the staff is going to wait out the jared terrell sweepstakes and see if they catch lightning in a bottle. Still a ton of possibilities for this class. As was said previously as these kids start to trim lists and take visits the picture of this class should become easier to see.

Thanks for the analysis. Hadn't heard Carrington's name in a while, so I was wondering if it was just because it is a quiet time or if it was because he was no longer interested. I'm sure as soon as I say this, you will get an update on him, haha!:D
