It took five years, but the University of Cincinnati has finally won its first game in the Big East Championship.

The Bearcats saw Rutgers erase a six-point lead with 36.7 seconds to play, but held on to win when freshman Lance Stephenson drove the lane and got fouled with 1.8 seconds to go.

Stephenson made his first free throw, then intentionally missed the second one to help UC end a three-game losing streak with a 69-68 victory over the Scarlet Knights on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

“It was a one-point blowout. That’s all you need in a tournament,” said UC coach Mick Cronin, who won his first game as the Bearcats’ head coach in March after 12 straight losses. “We got a one-point blowout and we’re proud of it.”

No. 11 seed UC (17-14) will play No. 6 seed Louisville (20-11) at 9 p.m Wednesday in the second round.
