Game is Saturday at 12 PM EST

Last year they were our first exhibition game. We won 86-79 (no need to worry about the defense). Louisville beat them 71-55 this past Sunday. I think we'll have a tougher time in this one, but it's time to lock it down a little and get geared up for the real season.

Bellarmine 58
UC 79

Bellermine is in the top 6 of Division II in almost every preseason publication, and as high as #3. They made their 3rd final 4 in the last 5 years last year and finished with 31 wins, so they are no slouch.

Bellarmine is always well coached and they pass and shoot the ball the way Cronin wants his teams too, which is why we play them every year.

I would not put much stock in the UofL v. Bellarmine result. Davenport made little effort at winning or even playing a close game against Pitino. I suspect that he will play more of a realistic player rotation against UC. Look for a relatively close game. I wouldn't be surprised if UC has to pull one out in the end.

Here's the straight scoop on Bellarmine: The front line is very long for any college basketball team, D1 or D2: Likely lineup (although Davenport may not start his regular season starters): (1) Davis 5'10", (2) Troutman 6'5", (3) Derksen 6'9", (4) Suggs 6'10", and (5) Kolo 6'10".

Although long, the front line in not strong. Kolo is solid at 240lbs, and will not be easily pushed around. Suggs and Derksen are finesse players and will have trouble standing their ground against the big, strong UC players. Suggs and Derksen, however, are highly skilled players with the ball, who can shoot and slash. Derksen is a particularly gifted offensive player (he had 20 pts against UofL in 23 minutes). Suggs is a very good spot up 3 shooter, although he had a bad shooting game against Louisville. Suggs had 15 pts, 5 assists and 5 blocks against UC two years ago. All three big guys are a threat to hit a three pointer. Probably the big difference between Bellarmine and a typical D2 team, like GVSU, is that Bellarmine is capable of playing very solid interior defense, assuming they can keep their big guys out of foul trouble.

Troutman at the 2 is a very good player with a D1 body. Stat stuffer, he will contribute in every area. The question, like this time last year, for Bellarmine is the point position. Davis is a Juco xfer with a great deal of physical tools, but is unproven on this level.

Where Bellarmine cannot hang with UC will be when they go to their bench. It is inexperienced and lacks the size and strength to compete with UC's rotation. If Davenport keeps the rotation down to 7 people, I would look for a relatively close game, less than 15 pts, if he is playing everybody, it will be more like 25.

Bottom line is that Bellarmine is very good, much better than Grand Valley. I think UC, however, has a very good team, probably better than Louisville, and will ultimately win this game but by a respectable spread.

With Knightmoves writeup, which was very informative thank you, anyone thinking we could see TC, Evans, Shaq, Clark and Ellis? With that size lineup from BU I think this would be the best way to counter it. Not start these guys but see how they do when we need a bigger lineup.

What's everyone looking to see? I'd like to see us continue the free flowing offense. Year 2 of this core it feels like so far the guys are more comfortable looking to find their own individual game. And sometimes that's the most unselfish thing you can do. Bc now they have the IQ and experience to know when to make the extra pass and when to take the shot. I'd like to see Cobb and KJ get into double figures again. I'd like to see Caupain continue to look for his shots. I'd like to see Shaq continue to get into the teeth of the defense and make the right play. I'd like to see Ellis a little more engaged. And I'd like to see DeBerry get on the glass. He needs to get mean out there.

I like to see kj and Shaq just focus mainly on shutting down their man. Feed the post in this game, let's see what we have against size. Like to see more fast break offense also

I want good ball movement again. It would be great to see so many open 3's again. Single digit turnovers would be nice too, I know I talk about it a lot, but it has to be the #1 emphasis for this team.

I want to see Evans have back to back solid games. If we can spread a team out and have 3 threats from deep (Caupain, Cobb, Evans) either our bigs are going to get a lot of 1v1s or our shooters are gonna get a lot of wide open looks.

Same. I just need to see consistency. I want to continue to see good ball movement that results in wide open shots. I want to see Caupain aggressive, Cobb's and Evans's sweet strokes, Shaq's ability to drive, get fouled and hit his fouls shots, Jenifers ability to zip passes through traffic and find the open man, Clark and Ellis's ability to rebound and play defense. I want improvements from Clark and Ellis on the offensive side of the ball, Kevin to play more under control and improved rebounding as a team, specifically Deberry, Ellis, and Shaq.

So who is all going to to the Bellermine game?

Ill be there, I upgraded my tickets to 7 rows back for this game (it was cheap).

Its insane how literally in the dark you are in the bearcat lair compared to the lower section where we moved down to in the last game.

I love sitting this close

Don't think I am making the trek to Clifton this time. Plan on streaming it online while watching the Notre Dame game. Gotta compromise here in order to watch both at once! Love that Bearcats TV streams the exhibition games. Really a cool feature.

Lol, I would never miss live Bearcat basketball in order watch Notre Dame. I'll pray for you.

I'm heading for Clifton soon. Looking forward to a good game. I'm hoping for at least a 20 point win, but fearing something much closer. This game is a good test every year. I'm hoping the offense keeps getting better, and the defense and rebounding make a strong return. Those two things didn't show up much in the first exhibition.

It's pretty disgusting that you're a ND fan.....kind of makes me sick a little.

At least you plan on streaming it! Which one will you have the sound on for?

I love Bearcat basketball game days! We gotta come out strong today. If I recall, they were beating us early last year.

I have had family and friends both go to and play for Notre Dame, been a fan for life. Don't really need your prayers though L-T since you know, Notre Dame is God's team :D

I will have the sound on for the Cats. Don't need to hear ND win, just see it.

I'll expect the same for this game. I think the early tip time might effect the Cats more. Ellis didn't seem to interested in the first scrimmage. Bellermine will be looking to make a statement by beating us. Think we will go down early, then our defense will provide us with a Bellermine drought so we can take the lead. Bearcats win by 15-20.
