Hey if anybody goes to the Carleton game today please fill us in on how the team looks, who looked good running the point, does Jackson really have an offensive game now, etc. Thanks!

Big crowd on hand for tonight's titanic struggle. I just saw Corie Blunt, wish I would've asked him about how his grandma got all that pot, must've been a really big party.

I saw 6 points watching on Gamecast and was like alright maybe Mick was right! Hicks 2.0 sounds good with me. Plus he's got 2 more inches than Hicks had. I loved his monster blocks he would have then he would scream! JJ has the mean face going on though

Interesting 1st half. Lawrence has stage fright, or else he's way overrated. Shaquille Thomas looks really good. JJ has improved 100%. Even Nyarsuk left the ground a couple of times! They really need this game for experience and to see which 5 gel best. Haven't seen those 5 ......yet. Got to remember they're playing Carleton and NOT Louisville.
BTW, who is Zack Tobler and where did he come from? He's our new "token" replacing Ep, I guess.

Nice to see everybody try to drive the lane today!
Only took 9 / 3's and made 4 =44%
Nobody overly impressive at PG. Guyn protects the ball well. Caupain's feet are always moving. I foresee a few traveling calls vs him.
JDIII looked good for the few minutes he got.
JJ is a whole new player. Be interesting to see him vs good competition since he'll be giving away 3-4 inches.
Titus picked up his game late in the second half.
Shaquille looked good but still lacks arc on his shots both from the floor and the FT line.
When Mick can go 10 deep all game, they can press on defense. A good team will get a lot more points than Carleton did if they can break the pressure.
Going to be an interesting season, for sure.
I'm looking forward to it.

Some things I took away from this game:

1 - The new emphasis on hand-checking is really going to suck until the tendency is coached out of college basketball. We have great depth on the perimeter, so it might not affect us as much as some other teams, but I do worry about Jackson, Rubles, and Nyarsuk getting in foul trouble.

2 - I think nearly every returning player showed improvement in some capacity. Our team didn't fall in love with the 3-ball and attacked the basket with regularity. Although there were some stagnant possessions, movement without the ball looked better.

3 - Guyn will lose the starting job early in the year. He already went in the dog house multiple times today, and I think Caupain looked better all around. Interesting, even Kevin Johnson got a shot at the point, if only for a few possessions.

4 - Davis looked like the odd man out in the rotation early, but he once again showed flashes of his ability to score. I think he can be an offensive spark plug off the bench if he is allowed the opportunity.

5 - I thought Thomas and Sanders both looked much better defensively. I have been hard on Sanders, but I think he is ready to contribute. Still, I think Thomas should receive the lion's share of the minutes at the 3, and I was puzzled when Mick took him out with 2-1/2 minutes left. Shaq puts points on the board late in the game, so I would prefer to see him on the floor in crunch time.

6 - Cronin was 100% correct about Jackson, and I do expect him to be a 10-12 points, 7-8 rebounds, 2-3 blocks kind of guy this year. Jackson will play as many minutes as his foul situation allows him to. Nyarsuk also looked solid. Very pleased that both seniors stepped up in the off-season and put in the work to become better players. I am no longer concerned about our play at the 5, so long as they can stay out of foul trouble.

7 - Lawrence looked a little rough out there, but I thought he gave pretty good effort defensively and showed his ability to create room for the mid-range jumper. With his injury history, he's probably still shaking off some rust, so I don't expect big things from him early. However, I think he will be a borderline double-digit scorer the 2nd half of the season.

My take aways from todays game.

- Uptempo was nice to see... This team is going to excel if they can push the tempo.

- Length and athleticism at all spots.

- JD lack of playing time was surprising, coming off a redshirt year.

- Titus and Justin looked very good and are going to be very important.

- Lawrence looked awful. Thought his effort was poor as well. SK lit him up about effort.

- I would expect for Caupain to take over the starting role at PG midway through the season.

Pros:
Jackson and Rubles were committed to staying around the basket. I forsee those two being our second and third leading scorers.

Caupain and Johnson both looked pretty good, the shots didn't fall but I liked the looks they got.

Big Dave looked noticeably bigger and wasn't moved off his spot as easily as he was against similar level competition last year

Cons:
Guyn didn't look any more "mature" than last year, as usual his on ball defense is pretty good but he gets lost off the ball often.

I don't expect much from Lawrence but he was awful effort wise. He made two drives weak drives to the rim and committed 5 fouls. Again, not much expectations for this year. We don't need much from him because Rubles and Jackson will get a lions share of the minutes at the 4.

Shaq still gets lost a ton on defense.

The fast break spacing is still bad.

The offense was much improved, way less 3's.
Officiating made me want to stangle someone toward the end.
Jackson was much improved, not shy but not befuddled when attacking and finishing. Defense was strong too.
Thomas, if he can improve his defense, I think he could graduate and play in the league. One of the few guys who can create and finish in tight spaces.
Rubles had the misfortune of having a few just fall out but he still scored and made good moves, had boards and got called for some very suspect fouls.
Sanders, played a heady game. He made a couple, left one or two that should have been...
Lawrence- Bleh. I know the potential is there but he's definitely not there. The only forward today who I think wouldn't get minutes is Lawrence.

Nyarsuk, he had two that were in and out. Played good defense and rebounded. He also stayed out of foul trouble for the most part.

When it comes to the guards:
Caupain was hot and cold but you can see for a frosh he has a pretty good skill set.

Johnson wasn't bad, had a very nice strip that was called a foul. Made a
decent 3 and didn't have any "WTF!!!" moments.

Kilpatrick, I'm glad he showed restraint from behind the 3 point line. He a couple rim out. Good day overall.

Guyn had one foul that was stupid but he seems to have a better handle
than his would be successors. Had a shot from 3 rim out and he got absolutely hammered on a no call going to the basket.

Davis had one good 3 and was sort of quiet beyond that.

Morman was abscent :(

Overall, need to finish when given the oppurtunity. With what we left on the floor, this could have been a real blow out today. Free throws need a little work. I'm not trying to read too much into this game but I actually think we'll be all right this year. Justin Jackson, Titus Rubles and Shaquille Thomas all made me feel a bit easier today. The fowards were a pleasant surprise.
