After the 4-8 start to his career many people had questions about Butch. The majority of people remained cautiously optimistic that he was going to get things going in a better direction. After last season and the strides he's made on the recruiting trail I felt great about what Coach Jones was doing. I honestly thought this season would be a drop off from last for the Bearcats. We lost a lot on the defensive line, the Big East player of the year and the leader of our team in Collaros. I think a lot of people would have been happy with an 8-4 team.

Granted there is still a lot of time left and anything can happen but the job Butch has done so far this year has been tremendous. We're talking national coach of the year type stuff. The defense is playing fantastic, the offense continues to score even with the limitations of Munchie and the team as a whole just seems to have adopted a winning mentality that Coach Jones has instilled in them.

After losing Brian Kelly this program could have spiraled and once again became an afterthought. CBJ has not only taken the reigns and kept pace, he's on track to improve the program from what we saw under Kelly.

Now let's just hope we can convince him to stick around for a while.

I got destroyed on message boards for saying that I thought Butch Jones was a better coach and fit for this program. I hope he stays here a long time because he does a great job.

I agree with the original post and was right there defending him with you.

I was fortunate enough his first year to have an ear in the locker room and heard some general feedback from some of the players. Granted it was second hand. That team was not behind Butch. He made them work ALOT harder than Kelly ever did and the players were resentful because of it. A few players got injured early in pratices and the losses mounted up and the team blamed Butch's overworking them as a reason for injuries and a reason for losing. That team flat out gave up. That team was accustomed to winning and didn't handle the adversity very well. By years end a few seniors were happy to not have made a bowl game because they didn't want to go through another month of practice. Again, this was all second hand. I was confident that the younger guys would come up and work hard and they did. This team is a cohesive unit. Also heard that when Kelly was coach the team wasn't that gelled. He isolated groups by position and there wasn't good chemistry between offense and defense and some players resented the treatment Kelly gave to the offense and primarily the QBs. With that said, Kelly was a heck of a motivator and his teams played hard to win. But I am much happier with Butch running the ship because I think he brings a tougher work ethic and I feel he is a much better recruiter. I also feel he says what he means and means what he says. Kelly on the other hand was as slimy as they came. I heard Butch told that team his first year on senior day that that was the laziest team he had ever coached and he was embarrassed to be a part of it. While I'm not sure I completely agree with saying this (and like I said it was second hand so its alleged that he said it) I have to respect his honesty if that's how he felt. His subsequent teams have played hard for him and that's what I care about at this point.
