2) Cincinnati will go 12-0....but lose the AAC title game

If Gunner Kiel can stay healthy, Cincinnati will be the best Group of Five team. They were a really good team last year that didn’t quite get the respect it deserved due to tough road losses to Ohio State and Miami. Most damning, they were ambushed by a vastly improved Memphis team in between those two games – ugly three game losing streaks tend to make people forget about you.

Here’s to guessing that won’t happen again. Cincinnati should be 3-0 heading into a big Thursday night rematch at Memphis, which I believe the Bearcats will be primed and ready for. They return home for another rematch game against Miami – another Thursday night game – that will provide yet another national TV showcase. Miami is still not that good. The tricky game is the road game at BYU, but it comes after a bye week and the jury is out on BYU being any good this year. The last six games are all winnable.

So that puts Cincinnati at 12-0, with a high ranking, maybe even on the fringe of the playoff discussion, when they host the AAC Title Game in December. The problem? They’re going to play Memphis again. And it’s really, really hard to beat the same team twice. They won’t.

While I'm expecting 10+ wins, it's not like he picked a joke of a record. Not sure his expectation has anything to do with not caring about football.

His expectation is based on the 9-4 records the past couple of years. It's kind of a lazy prediction IMO and it's based on the idea our coach will not deviate from that pattern.

My question doesn't just come from his prediction of 9-4. That is a fair prediction that could easily happen. But it steams from his countless bashing of the football program and I'm curious as to why.

An undefeated season is so rare, but I think this team might have a chance. It's all going to hinge on the defense, they're going to need to be VASTLY improved if we're going to make some noise on the national stage. I think 11-1 or 10-2 is a very real possibility. No one on our schedule really scares me, it's just our defense that keeps me up at night.

Vegas has set the O/U for 7.5 wins.

Someone make the case for me why I shouldn't bet my life on the over.

Whoa! If that under hits, I may join NTS in my opinion of Tuberville. No reason this team shouldn't win double digit games.

So is that 9-3 with a bowl game loss or 8-4 with a bowl game win?

Remember there's also a conference championship game we might play in too. If you're saying we go 9-3 and lose a bowl game we might have an extra game sandwiched in there.

Clearly you put very little thought into this.

To me this season hinges on two big factors. Number one, as you stated, the defense. Last year the defense was just downright awful. I blame coaching as much as I blame the players. Tuberville likes to say we don't have the talent, blah, blah, blah, but Kelly and Butch managed to win with that level of talent in a conference that was better than what we've played against the last couple of years. He uses that as a convenient excuse so it's time to show he's recruited better and getting more out of his team now. As bad as half of our schedule was last year and will be again this year there's no reason our talent doesn't still blow through people. So yes, the defense has to be improved. The question is how improved. If they can get to even a respectable level then our offense is good enough to carry us.

The second factor to me is how improved will Kiel be. As good as he is and as much deserved hype he has it's easy to forget he was playing in his first college season last year after sitting for two straight years. His two flaws to me were that he was injured alot and he shorted his deep balls, almost every time. The injury thing could be bad luck or it could be something in the way he carries himself or his body just naturally is. We need him to be healthy. As far as him shorting his deep balls, we have great receivers that can make adjustments on balls that can make him look good sometimes. Other times it looked like he was chucking balls up in the air and they were nowhere near the receiver. If he does that this year it will be easy to sit safeties back and wait for him to chuck the ball up. We need to really pound the ball on the ground this year. For one it will open up the passing game better and put less pressure on Kiel. We have the horses to do it. For two, it will burn the clock so the defense isn't constantly on the field. If Kiel takes that next step, which his talent shows he should, we could scary good on offense. If the defense is solid (doesn't need to be great, although it would be nice) and Kiel is improved this will be a very fun season. I can't wait.

3-4 record in these seven: @BYU, @Memphis, @Houston, @ECU, @USF, vs. Miami-FL, vs. UCF

Hopefully, 5-0 record in these: @Miami (OH), Temple, Alabama A&M, Tulsa, and UConn

8-4 regular season, bowl win over some pathetic MAC, C-USA, etc school...finish 9-4.

Hope I'm wrong guys!!! Hopefully they go 12-2 or 13-1 and win an access bowl game...just don't see it with the boneheaded coaching decisions that have nearly cost us games against poor competition in the past.

So my 8-4 regular season pick is still in play but I think 7-5 may be more likely.
