With all the talk of UC basketball I thought a topic outside of UC would be nice...I was thinking about the state of college basketball and wanted to hear some opinions.

Do you think the NBA will ever let HS players enter the draft again without going to college? Was this rule put into play from the NBA or the NCAA or mutual? I just think college basketball is becoming a bit ridiculous watching the UK's of the world just have a bunch of 1 and done's. I think it takes away from watch college basketball is all about and quite frankly even if UC got a bunch of one and done's I wouldn't like it. Its nice to see players develop their game and actually get an education! We all know these players from UK, UNC, Kansas, etc aren't really focused on anything but bball, girls, and tweeting. Some HS players deserve to go straight to the NBA and have no business playing in college. Where is the integrity in the college game or has money bought that as well?

Idk about the NBA, I don't watch it because, IMO, it is fake basketball (no defense, lots of traveling, and big egos). But, I think that the college baseball rule should be adopted here. If you decide to go to school, you must go for 2 years, but if you want to go straight out of high school, you should be able to. This is fair to all parties and is just better overall.

The NBA makes the determination about when players are eligible for their league. Sometimes the pro league will work with the NCAA on a rule (i.e - baseball) but the NCAA does not control when someone is eligible for MLB or NBA, etc.

Fake basketball? Thats the most ridiculous thing I have ever read.

Watch the game. Learn the game.

The NBA is amazing basketball. Frankly Im sick and tired of hearing people saying they dont play defense. Its absurd.
- One. The league has made it impossible to defend by not allowing hand checking, BECASUE people wanted to see more points.
- Two. Great offense always beats great defense. NBA players can score the ball.
- Three. Look at the scores of the game. Typically around 100. Most college games are low to mid 70s. NBA games are longer, and much better offensive players. Not a huge difference.

People who say the NBA doesnt play defense need watch the game. Its amazing to see how contested alot of shots are and its simply irrelevant.

The NBA playoffs are the greatest thing to watch in sports.

As for the original topics. This is america. If kids want to go straight to the NBA they should be allowed.

Thank you LL, that's what I am saying. In today's age there are kids who should go straight to pro, holding them to one year isn't doing anything but making them a marketing tool for universities and the player's self ego. I enjoy watching pro basketball too, they do play defense in the league, but lets face it, those players know how to score because they are so talented.

LL, do you see this rule going back to how it was pre-Lebron or staying how it is.

I agree. When you have a 7'0" like Dirk Nowitzki that can hit any shot on the court it's not a result of bad defense. It's great offense. Contested fadeaway jump shots are commonplace in the NBA because there are so many good on-ball defenders.

The rule is not changing unless a lawsuit is won by a HS kid trying to get in the NBA. The odds of that happening are slim. I see the rules going to 2 year minimum out of HS before kids being allowed to come in straight out of HS.

The rule was put into place by the NBA. The players do not have to attend college, though. They are able to go straight from high school to Europe, if they so desire; or, which has been suggested to players like Shabazz Muhammad, the player could elect to hire a trainer, forego college, and just prepare for the NBA Draft. The rule states that players must be one year removed from high school; there is no mention of college.

Personally, I think it affects the integrity of higher learning in this country, but I would not deny a one-and-done player a spot on my team, if I were a coach. And, if Cincinnati were to recruit and land such a player, I would support him as I would any other player. Until the rule changes (if it ever does), however, it's easy to see why any high school player would elect to go to college, over Europe or other options:

- Europe, or other international opportunities, offers a difficult transition and, likely, some sort of language barrier. Plus, what 18-year-old, regardless of how big or talented he may be, wants to leave his family and go to a foreign country, where he will likely know no one?
- ESPN and the like give premier college programs a ton of exposure, so why would any high school senior elect to play abroad where his name may be forgotten?
- Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, etc. These guys don't come around too often. College offers a security blanket for top-15 recruits who may not pan out at the college level. A bad first year in Europe is much more difficult to sell than a bad freshman year in college, especially when you'll have the opportunity to showcase your improvement next year, or the year after, or the year after, while enjoying national exposure.
- College is comforting. It gives you the feeling of freedom, while allowing you to enjoy a lot of the amenities of a good college atmosphere. You're surrounded by kids you're own age who are dealing with the same issues that you are. Also, parties and girls.

Regarding the NBA being "fake" basketball, I have some thoughts. It's true, they play defense in the NBA, but defensive systems are virtually prohibited by NBA rules. When was the last time you saw a 2-3 zone or matchup zone in the NBA? It's been a very long time, because man-to-man defense is virtually mandated by NBA leadership. It makes for a more exciting game, sure, but it does detract from some of the purity of the sport, in my opinion. Coaching strategy is virtually unseen; the coaches in the NBA are more psychologists than they are coaches - you have to learn how to deal with ego if you want to succeed. It's also true that the NBA has better athletes, etc. But, anyone who watches the NBA (and I do, from time to time, when nothing else is on TV) knows that they get away with a lot of traveling in an attempt to encourage stardom. It's much less of a team game in the NBA, which is something I just don't really like. I'd rather watch Ohio-Bowling Green instead of Heat-Lakers any day of the week, any time of the year. It's my preference, because in my opinion, the NBA is just boring. The athletes do incredible things, yes, but they oftentimes also overshadow the very game that we claim to be enjoying. That's not for me, personally.

It's a scam, it keeps the college "blue bloods" blue and keeps certain people from having to coach. AAU schools and this rule need to die. Let NBA players be NBA players.
As for the league, the NBA is terrible basketball.
1. The season is too damn long, no one cares about individual games, it's the same with pro baseball.
2. No one plays defense until late in the season, which means we get to see a lot of half assed effort until then.
3. The walking, holy hell. You get like five steps, if you're Kobe they'll call fouls for breathing near you.
4. The game is rigged, wealthier cities more often than not, manage to get better franchises. When a hot new commodity finishes his contract with the team who got him in the lottery, and looks for other options, where does he typically go? Miami, Los Angeles, Boston, New York. It's shit. Small market teams get the screw, for that reason the NBA blows.

Thank you, someone who thinks logically. The NBA sucks. And whoever said the NBA playoffs is the best thing in sports is WAY off, NCAA tourney is 50x better. I love coming home and watching upsets, flipping to whatever channel I want and there being basketball. Plus, they have a joke of a commish, David Stern. It is just like playing streetball, no real coaching or defense. Look, Mick won't let kids play if they can't play d, whereas in the NBA, you can play d if you want. The NBA is egotistical and there is nothing team about it.

Yeah, the really interesting cases are the Lance Stephensons of the world whose game fit the NBA way better than college. It makes sense that the NBA is in charge of this, because David Stern is as inept as you can get for a commish.

The NBA does not need saved... Its the single greatest sporting event in the world.

The NBA playoffs are simply the greatest.

Haha, funny. It goes: March Madness, NFL Playoffs, College Football bowl games, MLB playoffs, NBA/Stanley Cup. NBA is fake, I would rather watch the Harlem Globetrotters.
