Cronin Not So Worried About Future (Bill Koch)

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/uc/2010/...-future-at-uc/

I took that Mick is worried about his job, but he cannot do anything more than coach, recruit and try to win games. The only thing Mick can do is try to win games and carry on with his life.

Also, Mick's buyout is only $1.5 million. That's chump change. A move could easily be made.

Riddle me this Batman: Does Thomas/The Board/University make the move?

*Please keep it civil and on topic, meaning we don't need to say he is a bad coach. That's fine if you think that, but it really isn't too pertinent to replacing him.

I think UC will give him one more year, so I'm ok with that. I've said this before, Mick deserves/needs five years when he first got hired, for several reasons.
1. Out of respect for him, since nobody wanted the job, and he was the hero at the time.
2. The program was in shambles, similiar to what SMU went through (to a lesser degree, albeit)
3. Mick wasn't helped with Downey and Mitchell leaving, as well as a few recruits who just haven't panned out. Sure, he recruited them, but at the time...those guys were probably the best that UC could get.

I know I waver back and forth on this issue. The reason is that I'm conflicted between the above, and what I see on the court. For this reason, I'm holding true to what I said in the past and willing to be loyal to our coach for another season.
That said, I really want to see improvement in the offense.

You expressed my feelings exactly.

I think that he is definitely back next season as well he should be.

In the end, you have to look at the big picture and not the disappointment of the last 3-4 weeks.

The best reason I have heard to replace him is to repair the fractured fan base. In the end, I don't think that is a good enough reason as our fan base as a whole sucks anyway. Every program in the country is supported when they are winning big, the best programs in the country (which we as fans supposedly want to be) are supported all of the time. Even Huggins was and still is critical of our fan base, and he was a God here.

I think "mending" the fanbase is a valid argument. I agree with you that our fanbase is fickle and irrational (most of the time), but $$$ does talk.

I think Cronin gets next year. I will not be upset if Cronin gets next year.

Its definitely a valid argument. But in my opinion its doesn't outweigh the risk.

We aren't going to hire a name coach. Its going to be a mid-major coach on the rise with no track record of recruiting at the highest level or competing in a conference close to as difficult as the one we are currently in. To go with that we could lose some of our current roster and our incoming recruits (correct me if I am wrong on that, I think I remember some talk about changing the rules of letting recruits out of their LOIs, but I don't know if that went into affect yet).

Right now I just think it makes sense to keep Cronin, especially since we have gotten better ever year under him and I expect that to continue next year.

I wouldn't be outraged if he were fired though.

I don't think firing a coach to appease a small yet loud segment of the fan base is intelligent at all. And, yes, I believe that in the end there are far more Cronin supporters than detractors. Just look at the backlash at the "haters" that have recently made their voices heard here and other sites.

Bottom line is that progress has been made each year. Some believe that it is shouldn't take as long as it has but I am willing to give Cronin the opportunity to take this core group of players and build a NCAA-caliber team. I guarantee we are closer than what some think.

Also, IMO, if Cronin goes now it will be at least another few years before the progam is consistently a NCAA team.

I would agree with this. Firing Cronin will likely set us back quite a bit. In my opinion, the circumstances don't warrant taking that step back right now.

I know he is already back and everything, but how valid is that argument? I for one, don't think it would be smart to make changes because of a fan base's opinion. I know they are the ones spending the money which help the program and all, but usually those fans are some of the most irrational fans.

To fire a coach because the fan base is upset would not be smart at all, however I suppose if in a situation like this there are other reasons. The fan base is just one of them many I suppose? Either way, the fan base should not have that big of a say in the coaches future. I'm not saying I don't get the point, I'm just saying I don't think it would be wise to fire a coach so the fan base sticks with you. Sooner or later, they will be back.

Agreed.
