Yah that's the thing. We have had 2 star guys end up being better players. I think most of our real "projects" were bigs for the most part and that is to be expected since talented bigs are going to be on every coaches radar. It's the assessment of guards and wings that are going to be critical. Cronin did a pretty good job of that...but he leaned towards the athlete vs the basketball player. Brannen may/will lean the other way.

It's going to be hard to say if that philosophy (or those assessments) will be better or worse until we see some product on the floor. As a fan, year 1 and 2 may be tough to assess since it's a new system for the players to pick up and to perfect and also to build chemistry. Cronin would only trust his veterans or a high caliber youngster to execute his plan.

The good thing about Davenport is that he can play a stretch 4 type of position or wing...so he can help in a couple of areas if we want to play small or go traditional. It's time to get some ball handlers now since we have plenty of depth at the 4 and 5 with Scott, Diara, Gillam, Hardnett, and now Davenport. I think we can play traditional or small depending on the perceived talent from CJB perspective. We are very light on ball handlers and shooters. Let's see how good Brannen is at recognizing talent whether it be 2, 3 or 4 stars.

Yeah, the taller the position of need is, the more likely you need to find a project to fill the role. Simple numbers, there are fewer tall players (especially the 6'10"+ range), so the great and good ones get snatched up quicker.

I view ratings/rankings on the large scale as sort of like a lottery system. The higher rated the guy is, the better your odds he will turn out great. But virtually any player can still be a bust.

For a coach it's about being able to evaluate players and project where they will be at in 1-4 years (or more if you are looking at HS juniors/sophomores). Ratings start to become irrelevant on the individual level due to their worse ability to judge player personality, work ethic and project into the future.

Not only that, but ratings bounce around a lot and vary widely by service. Look at Samari Curtis who has been as low as 230 (4/3/2018) and reach 92 just over 2 months later and is now back at 180 (on 247 composite), but is ranked 119 by 247.

Any guy you have to do your diligence, but especially for a lower rated guy. There is usually a reason for a low rating (though some guys do slip through the cracks). The goal is to find guys who's issues are things you can work with and fix and who you can develop.

As I've said before, I'm not sure Brannen will lean more towards skills over athleticism. He may go for even more extreme athleticism, believing he can teach the offense. Athletes are also just more valuable then skilled players due to the fact that you can teach them skills. If we do go more towards skilled players it won't be a huge shift, but more guys of the Cumberland type (though not as skilled as Cumberland) who are above average, but not great athletes and more skilled as players.

I say most of our "projects" have been bigs. Cronin leaned VERY heavily on athletes at that position who can guard multiple positions and or guard the rim (or both). Brannen could lean towards scoring bigs who aren't nearly as mobile. If there is one position that I would like to have a "project" athlete I guess it would be at the 5...but putting 5 players on the floor who can score could also offset that I guess. I just would like to make sure we can defend at a reasonably high level since we have to do a little of both to be considered a contender. I don't want to be above 100 on defense to get to top 25 on offense.

If we are going to be really good...I think we have to be sub 50 at both.

I think there was a stat a while back that no recent team had won a national championship if they didn't have one of either of the following combinations. Either a top 22 offense AND defense...or a combination of a top 10 offense or defense as long as the other was not worse than 42nd. That stat may or may not have changed in the past couple of years I haven't checked.

Cronin was a perennial top 22 defense but he never really got in the range of top 22 offense so he would never qualify there. He had been #2 on D and 49 on O. He had been #34 on O and #15 on D. Never under 22 in both and never top 10 in one and top 42 in the other. Both of those were very close years to make the cut.

If Brannen wants to make it big time he has to give us top 22 in both offense and defense or he has to have a top 10 offense with a low 40's D. That is a lot to ask to be sure.

Last year there were 14 teams that would make the cut under these parameters. Either top 22 in both or top 10 in one and top 42 in the other.

I would guess they rely on mostly vids and watching them live. The mix tapes are like a resume, try to catch the coaches eye. Then the coach delves into watching live tapes to see how that player performs in more real life situations. If that looks good too, that's when I imagine they watch the guy live and meet with him (and learn about his personality). I don't really know, but that's the order that seems most logical to me.

That seems about right to me

Is that an indictment on the ratings or the prior coaching

The rankings. Not trying to be too hard on Shaq cuz he wasn’t that bad, but Sanders barely looked like a D1 player let alone a 4 star, and Lawrence couldn’t even hack it at Manhattan. Guys like Dixon and Parker were leaps ahead of these guys with lower rankings.

Lawrence

I went and watched Lawrence in High School. He was a stiff and afraid to go inside. Many in here showed me no mercy as they trusted Mick's evaluation. That is, until they saw him play for themselves. Stars do mean something at times, but times are different too often.

If recruiting is the ultimate factor in winning the conference then we should go ahead and void next season.....Memphis landed Boogie Ellis. Penny is on a recruiting tear. I just want some residual recruiting affects from them right now.

Jarron Cumberland in his 2nd G League game today....

He started the game, played 20 min, scored 2 points, went 1-3, 0-1 from 3. 4 rebounds (all offensive), 5 assists and was -10.

Side note, the NBA combine only takes 5 players from the G league combine and its looking more and more like Jarron will not be one of those five, I think if he isn't the chances increase dramatically that he comes back tho I wouldn't be surprised if he still doesn't. Also some rumblings that Jaevin is waiting on his decision and could be coming to UC pending JC decision. Lets also remember that the dead period in recruiting is coming up and summer classes will be ending allowing them to graduate which will allow more kids to enter the transfer portal. So the sky is not exactly falling with Lojo and Brooks leaving but JB does have his work cut out for him this summer.

Does that mean Jaevin might come if Jarron stays or leaves? Or is that just wishful thinking on part of our fanbase that since he was down to Mich & Oregon & Beilein left, he might reconsider?

I would think that Jaevin coming would be contingent on Jarron staying. I think he wanted Michigan and then Beilein left so he is re evaluating his situation. I don't think there's any chance he would consider coming to UC if Jarron doesn't come back.

Ok thanks. I thought I had read somewhere that J & J weren't exactly that close. Wonder if having played against NKU and JB at Oakland in Horizon League works in UC's favor?

If Jarron stays and his cousin comes, I think we will be a top 30ish team. I have no idea if that will happen though

Doesnt sound like jarron was selected...essentially eliminating this yr and the NBA..

Overseas is very much in play still imo.
