Gates, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, scored 17 points with 13 rebounds against Maryland. He produced 16 points with 10 rebounds the day before in UC's win over Vanderbilt.

At the time, it appeared as if Gates were poised to become one of the elite players in the Big East Conference, but he has not been able to maintain that level of play.

Can he become that player again?

"I think I can be," Gates said Thursday. "I was more aggressive in Maui. I don't know if it was the hype of being in Maui or what it was, but I know that I'm capable of doing it. I just have to come out every night and do it."

Be nice if Kenyon/Danny/Eric would spend time w/ Gates and Thomas this summer.

Not sure this should be completely on Gates. The one thing about being a big man is you need someone to throw you the ball. Would like Gates to get more opportunities in the paint.

He probably does need to work a little harder getting open though.....

Agree with this 100 percent. When you watch Gates, when he does get open down low, he rarely gets a pass to him, but at the same time, he rarely works hard to get open down low. This falls both upon the guards and gates. When he's open, you gotta get it to him, and Gates has to work harder to get open.
